Yes they did,but here's the real thing. With everyone so fired up for an ncaa football playoff, the bb playoffs have begun to be ludicrous with the 2nd rate teams and conferences that make it. Why does anyone think, over time, the football playoffs will make sense? Bottom line Ncaa not doing anything right in FB or BB at the high level.
More so than big 10 teams that were under .500 in the conference...and 5 cr@ppy big 12 teams. Tennessee on the bubble means Tennessee must win it's tournament. Tennessee has never made it into the field when it was on the bubble.
I was going to be upset if Kentucky got in and Tennessee didn't, and I thought that might happen. We just lost too many games early in the season. Maybe we can take the NIT.
did they deserve to make the ncaa tournament? did boise state deserve to make the ncaa tournament? if tennessee didn't get in, then alabama should have been given boise state's bid.
The Vols got "shafted"!!! How in the world did MTSU or St. Mary make the tournament? MTSU w/a SOS of 134 & only 1 top 50 victory on Dec. 8th at home against Ole Miss. Top 100- 2. Fran Frachella & others talked about their tough non-conference schedule? Who? Also their loss in the Sun Belt tourney was to Fla. Intenatl.- RPI 116! Are you kidding me? St. Mary's 102 SOS only 1 Top 50 Creighton- RPI 27 & 5 Top 100s.
The fact of the matter, do the math. Our SOS was 47 double the toughness of schedule; Top 50- 3 including Fla w/RPI of 8; 9 Top 100 victories & having won 9 out of our last 11! In years past, the NCAA committee tells teams if they want in- play a tougher non-conference & finish strong! For those bubble teams including Boise State & La Salle- their did neither! Both finished 7-5 in their last 12 games w/La Salle getting blown out by 24 against St. Louis! Come on commitee let's be consistent!!!!!
We should have taken care of business when we were in business. We all know the fellas didn't show up in some key games, especially, Ole Miss. Some Vols did not play hard on D. Post season is all about kicking into the next gear. We had the chances. We didn't play 40 minute ball in every ball game. Now the question of "Should we deserve... bla, bla" is moot. Heck no, we didn't get 'shafted' we relented to teams who refused to. We beat KY. We beat gators. We thought we were all that. Winners know when to pound their chest, and when to pound the paint. We chose the wrong 'when'. The chest pounding should be reserved for cutting down the big nets.
They could set their mind to winning the next hand, the one they've been dealt. There's not a lot of chest pounding in the NIT. But fortunately, the NIT net is there for the Vols to cut down IF they choose to. It'll be a grand opportunity to learn perseverance, and humility.
UT had been totally out just weeks ago, and then recently got into the mix. But if you look at the RPI's for the at-large teams who got into the dance, there is a case to made that Tennessee's record was stronger even though the won-loss might not have been equivilent. To my mind, that second unexplainable loss to Georgia was the final nail....they are NOT a good basketball team and beat us twice. So learn a lesson VOLS......EVERY game is important and early season fumbling has cost you two bids......let's not make it a third. Now go to the NIT and MAKE A DANG STATEMENT!

Like many here, you're overestimating the SEC as a BB conference. Many teams in the so-called mid-majors play very good BB. Our Vols are on the road to recovery in FB, but this BB team was a questionable tournment team.
You can't play a game on national TV, not ESPN, and toss up bricks like you were a bunch of apprentice masons trying to erect a mailbox at the end of a driveway.
The last 15 minutes of that game had more shots that should have went within 5 feet of the hoop that clanged around aimlessly to win that game 3 times over. Those 15 minutes going the other way would have made all the difference.
We can talk about all the close games early in the season but what UT showed at the end was they still had some offensive issues that were never resolved.
I would have said, "NO"... and then I saw some of those who did make it in....
Tennessee has more top 50 RPI wins than MTSU and St. Mary's... combined.
The selection committee is either on acid or just practicing some bad voodoo to come up with some of these "at large" picks.
Jay Bilas: "La Salle, MTSU and St. Mary's have four Top 50 wins, combined. UVa has six, by itself. Tennessee has three. Maryland has three. UK has four... ...I'm okay with the Committee taking every little guy. That's fine. Just admit it and stop saying "who did you beat?" Because you don't care."
FootballTime.com: "Of the teams on the bubble, not one from a power conference was given an at-large bid. We’ve reached the point where the selection committee is discriminating against power conferences in favor of the “little guy” as Bilas put it. With the field the committee selected they sent a message to schedule terrible teams and beat them. MTSU played just four games against the RPI top 100…and lost three of them. The Vols, conversely, played 19 and won nine. Which team is more tested? Which team is more proven?"

Thank you, I've been screaming this from the rafters for a week now..
No but as is so vividly portrayed on here, so should not a bunch of other teams. As with so much in sports, it's political and at a beauty pageant one usually goes with what he/she thinks makes makes them look good. The way this ended up more who is in than who's out Does Not make the committee look good. GO VOLS win the NIT and ignore the people who obviously think it is meaningless. Some true fans do not feel that way. Please do not lay another egg.

I suspect that since there is a mid-major AD on the selection committee this year, that had a lot to do with more mid-majors making the dance. How else can you explain so many mid-major conferences sending multiple teams? Isn't there one sending like 5 teams? That's indefenseable.
I also think it makes the pathways for the power teams a lot easier to advance past the sweet 16.
Mercer answered that question for us! I'm a loyal UT fan, but Martin isn't the answer! Our men's program has regressed and all of us who have endured Tennessee men's basketball being irrelevant for years cannot just sit by and allow it to continue to decline. Martin's a great guy etc. etc., but we need a coach that can win basketball games! Tennessee isn't the most sought after basketball head coaching job, let's not make it any less desirable! Pearl lost several players in one season (Tyler Smith etc.) and UT still made the NCAA tourney so no slack for losing Maymon.
