Tyler Summitt interviews for Chattanooga opening

Tyler Summitt has emerged as a candidate to fill the women’s basketball head coaching vacancy at Chattanooga.

The Marquette assistant coach, the son of Tennessee women’s head coach emeritus Pat Summitt, interviewed for the job on Saturday, said a source familiar with the process. The source requested anonymity because the interview hasn’t been made public.

Summitt interviewed with David Blackburn, who was named Chattanooga’s athletics director last month. He came to the school from Tennessee, where he was a senior associate athletics director. Blackburn has coaching openings to fill in both men’s and women’s basketball.

The Lady Mocs’ job opened early last month when Wes Moore left after 15 seasons to become the head coach at North Carolina State. Chattanooga tied a program record with 29 wins last season, including an 80-71 season-opening victory over UT. The Lady Mocs swept the Southern Conference regular season and conference tournament championships before losing to Nebraska in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

The timetable for filling the Lady Mocs opening is not known.

Summitt, a Tennessee graduate, just completed his first season on Marquette’s staff. He interviewed for a coaching opening last month at Coastal Carolina. The job eventually went to Wake Forest assistant Jaida Williams.

At first that exact same thought crossed my mind , but he does have a hotline number that might make him a more qualified candidate , and Blackburn being the interviewer cant hurt .

Pat was 22 when she took over the Lady Vols program and built it to where it is today. If Tyler get's the Lady Mocs job, and I hope he does, he'll already have a solid foundation to build on. Let's keep Tennessee legends in Tennessee. Do you hear me Berry twins and Dillon Bates?

UTC is an established program and will require an established coach with experience. Blackburn will not turn this program over to someone just because they carry a "name".

Yes she was but the state of women's basketball is a lot different today than it was when Coach Summitt was 22. Do you think that Tennessee would turn its program over to a 22 year old this day and time? I would hope not.

*actually the complete opposite, but feel free to post a link or story where Pat Summitt swore she was fired or removed in an affidavit.

Hiring Tyler Summitt would be a bold play, but think about it...

What other hire would generate national interest and sustained coverage, attract the attention of quality recruits, and most importantly for UTC at this moment, put more fans in seats?

I've never been across town to see a Lady Mocs game. If Son of Summitt became head coach we would be Roundhouse bound first game!

Chattanooga has long been a hotbed of Lady Vols support. Most of them consider Tyler to be--in the sincerest Southern sense--FAMILY. I can't imagine a more supportive community than Chattanooga in which that particular young head coach could begin his career.

Professionally, for him it would not be as big a jump as taking the same position at a school withOUT an established program. Remember, the one situation Tyler has no experience with is having to build from the ground up.

For UTC it would be a bold play, but think about it...

Lets see, Tyler has no experience? He's what, 22? So for about 20 of those years he was at about every Lady Vols practice. Has access to all of Pats play books, unofficially assisted in coaching and scrimmages with some of the top lady BB players of all time, and has a year of official asst. coach under his belt. UTC should be groveling to land him.
I'm no expert like all the other people commenting on here are but I do read and retain a lot of what I read so I will say I think he's qualified to coach at a UTC level school. Hope to see him on the bench in the fall.

He was also a walk on for Bruce's team and that was for coaching experience, not to play.

I thought he was a graduate assistant somewhere prior to going to Marquette. Anyone remember?

To the butt saying move this to general sports, why don't you let the editors decide? Tyler isn't just Pat's son, he is a Vol. Lots of former Vol news is printed on GoVolsXtra.

Precisely. The game is MUCH more competitive now than when PS started. Tyler Summitt has one year of experience as an assistant--not enough at all to merit a head-coaching job. Pay your dues, young man.

Tyler probably has more *unofficial* coaching experience than most young coaches have of the official variety. He was at Lady Vol practices practically from birth. He watched and listened as he grew up. From early teens or so (read Pat's new book) he watched film with her and was able to pick out things she didn't even see. He was a practice player for the Lady Vols for at least a year, then walked on to Bruce's team to learn more about coaching. He coached AAU teams That experience doesn't count? I'd say it does. Whether or not he is mature enough yet to handle a head coaching job is another story. He certainly is unusually mature for his age. I predict he'll end up with a head coaching job somewhere in the next few years. Just please NOT Alabama!

Tyler Summitt is not going to be hired as a head coach at Chattanooga. Maybe Chattanooga State. Oh and Mack McCarthy left Chattanooga because he could not keep his hands off the female students. He is not being hired, either.

With a total lack of experience and his age, could Tyler attract help that can get the players to come to UTC instead of going to Georgia State or similar schools that recruit the same players?

An excellent point! At worst, he's in over his head and they have to hire another coach, a 'la Dooley (the other coach who got a head coaching job prematurely, based on a parent's success). Who knows, Coach Summitt II might be a genius BB coach.

It does seem that he moves whenever he has a low win total. But if we can't keep Moore then Foster can fill in for a few years maybe.
