Tying the third-lowest round in school history, Tennessee’s Chessey Thomas fired a 6-under-par 66 in the second round of the NCAA East Regional on Friday at the Auburn (Ala.) Golf Club.
The junior from Spokane, Wash., had six birdies, as she moved up 55 spots on the individual leaderboard to a tie for 15th with a two-day score of 1-under 143.
“Today, I just played really steady,” Thomas said in a UT release. “I did not try to force anything, especially on the greens. As far as tomorrow, I think we are all ready and know what we each need to do to put down our best.”
The Lady Vols are tied for eighth heading into Saturday’s final round. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, as well as the top two individuals not on an advancing squad.
UT senior Erica Popson, who started tied for first, is tied for ninth after shooting 3-over 75 for a 36-hole total of 2-under 142.
“Today was a pretty good day overall and we have given ourselves a good chance for (Saturday),” UT coach Judi Pavon said. “Chessey played an amazing round today and kept us in the tournament.”
