Eve Repic and Laurence Guevremont of Tennessee advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw in doubles at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Memphis on Saturday.
The freshmen eliminated Lyn Yee Choo and Ana Gerbasi of East Tennessee State 8-4 in the first round and then knocked off Natasha James and Marketa Trousilova of Evansville, 8-5
Four of the five Lady Vols in singles advanced to the second round. Guevremont defeated Trousilova 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and Repic beat Kayla Jones of Chattanooga 6-2, 6-1. Also, Joanna Henderson rallied to beat James 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 as did Brittany Lindl against Briar Preston of Morehead State, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Tiffany Tavares of UT was ousted by Tiffany Williams of Middle Tennessee State, 6-2, 6-4.
Men’s Cross Country: The Tennessee men’s cross country team finished 32nd at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., one of the most prestigious cross country meets in the nation.
Senior Daniel Tobin was Tennessee’s top performer, crossing the 8K finish line in 127th with a time of 24 minutes, 31 seconds. Junior Peter Okwera, winner of two races already this year, was a second behind in 129th.
Tennessee’s other three scorers were senior Stephen Derlath (188th, 24:55); sophomore Kyle Walter (201st, 25:04); and junior J.R. Creekmore (223rd; 25:31).
There were 35 schools in the race. Tennessee finished one spot ahead of Texas A&M.
Softball: The Tennessee softball team will play Tusculum in a fall exhibition game Sunday at 3 p.m. at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Admission is free.
