Tennessee’s Hannah Wilkinson got the Lady Vols soccer team going early with a goal and added another late to seal the deal Sunday in a 2-0 victory over James Madison (2-2-0) at Regal Soccer Stadium.
For her first goal, Wilkinson beat two defenders on a breakaway, then raced past James Madison goalkeeper Ellen Forrest and put the ball in from the right side off a pass from Cheyenne Spade 3:21 into the game.
In the 77th minute, C.C. Cobb was the one to find Wilkinson racing down the field, and Wilkinson did the rest, shaking Forrest for an open-net goal.
There were zero goals, but plenty of action in the 73 minutes between the New Zealand native’s goals. Julie Eckel posted her first shutout of the young season for Tennessee (3-1-0).
Eckel made two big saves in the final minutes before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Eckel stopped Jennie Sroba’s shot from outside the box. In the 45th minute, Eckel made a save to her right after Kelly Abt fired from outside the box.
The goals were Wilkinson’s second and third of the season. Spade now has three assists to lead the team.
