Gotta say, the more I listen to Butch Jones, the stronger my sense that this is a guy who really "gets" football. With few rhetorical flourishes, he explains his concepts in such a way that even the casual fan can feel that he knows what Jones is talking about, or perhaps more importantly, that HE knows what he is talking about. I confess I occasionally enjoyed Dooley's historical and cultural references, but now it seems that he was mostly covering for a personality and a mentality that didn't have a sound, basic, but broad-based philosophy of the game. I see all of that with Jones. I can't help but feel that the players hang on his every word, that they feel he deserves respect for what he knows and how he presents himself. As the old saying goes, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." For all his crisp professionalism, he comes across as a guy who values the impact he can make on young men, and I think the players feel that everything he does is intended to make them better, not just on the field but in life.
