Oregon week practices intensify

EUGENE, Ore. — During practices this week in Knoxville, first-year Tennessee head coach Butch Jones conceded it's difficult, maybe impossible, to replicate with a scout team the look and skills of a quarterback like Marcus Mariota, among other weapons Oregon has at its disposal.

"What's hard to simulate is a quarterback that runs a 4.4 who can also drop back and throw the football," Jones said this week.

Here in Eugene, Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich can level with Jones to a degree.

Oregon's scout team can't quite replicate Tennessee's sheer size. A true freshman wide receiver, Marquez North -- rated the No. 2 receiver in the 2013 recruiting class -- stands 6-foot-4, 215 pounds. The offensive line goes from 6-2 to 6-6, and maxes out at 327 pounds. UO center Hroniss Grasu will have 6-8, 351-pound nose tackle Daniel McCullers standing over him.

Gotta say, I'm pretty impressed with the Oregon paper's coverage. I read several of the articles and all seemed quite fair and informative. If all the coaches' quotes are correct, there doesn't seem to be any question of the Ducks overlooking the Vols. It may be just standard "coach-speak" but the Vols likely won't be able to count on catching the Ducks off-guard. They probably think of themselves as championship contenders this year and would likely see a convincing win over the Vols as one of their main arguments for a spot in the championship game. Let's just hope the Vols play up to Oregon's apparent opinion of them!

Oregon will be anxious to make a statement game out of this. Being a PAC 12 team, they need to impress in order to edge out SEC/Ohio State and make the BCS title game. I expect the VOLS to make a good show of themselves, especially the first half. BUT, that last 30 minutes will seem like an eternity and my VOLS will need a super effort to stay on pace for all 60 minutes. Critical to that effort will be Tennessee's offense being able to mount drives and stay on the field. If they don't, then I'm afraid this game will get out of hand early. We will need a good spy who can tackle in space to keep that QB from running all over us. Then there will be edge containment........can we scheme this to offset their speed? Hey.....one thing I do know, Jones and company will have a sound game plan ready to go.......just do we have the athleticism and stamina to execute it? Can't afford to fly to Eugene, but I will danged well be hollering from the man cave! GO VOLS!!
