Behind 13 kills from freshman Ashley Mariani, the Tennessee volleyball team swept Austin Peay 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 on Thursday night in the Comcast Lady Vol Classic at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Lady Vols (7-1) have won five straight and improved to 29-6 in home openers.
“This was a great first match for us at home,” Lady Vols coach Rob Patrick said in a UT release.
“We had a tremendous crowd here that came out loud and passionate, providing a great atmosphere here in Thompson-Boling Arena. It helped us jumpstart the match and play at a high level.”
Mariani had a .346 hitting percentage. Junior Shaelyn Kolosky and freshman Jamie Lea each added nine spikes.
Senior libero Ellen Mullins, the nation’s leader in digs per set, finished with 20.
Austin Peay (2-7) played without outside hitter Jada Stotts who suffered a lower-body injury last weekend.
VCU (6-1) swept East Tennessee State (4-5) in the first match of the day.
UT returns to the court at 7 p.m. on Friday for a matchup with Wichita State (5-1). The Shockers play ETSU at 9 a.m.
