Tennessee junior Mikelis Libietis earned his first Davis Cup win Saturday and watched Sunday as his Latvian teammates split a pair of singles matches to beat Finland 3-2 overall.
With the win, Latvia advances to Europe/Africa Group 1 in 2014, a step closer to the World Group in the Davis Cup.
Libietis teamed with world No. 36 Ernests Gulbis on Saturday for a straight-set victory over Finnish brothers Micke Kontinen and Henri Kontinen — 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-3 to give Latvia a 2-1 lead in the matchup.
Gulbis clinched the win for Latvia on Sunday by beating Juhu Paukku 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. With Gulbis on the team, Latvia held a major edge over the Finnish squad whose highest-ranked player was Micke Kontinen at 606.
Libietis is ranked first in both singles and doubles in the ITA collegiate preseason rankings. He did not participate in Latvia’s first- or second-round wins in February and April because they were during the collegiate season.
