GVX Audio: Evan Woodbery recaps the Oregon game
Tennessee coach Butch Jones said Monday that he planned to open up the quarterback competition to backup Nathan Peterman and true freshmen Riley Ferguson and Josh Dobbs.
The Vols (2-1) play at No. 19 Florida (1-1) on Saturday at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville (TV: CBS, 3:30 p.m.)
News Sentinel Tennessee football beat writer Evan Woodbery said he thought starter Justin Worley or any other quarterback would be limited by the Vols' young receivers.
"The quarterback problem exacerbates their problems at receiver, and the receiver situation exacerbates their problems at quarterback," Woodbery said. "The problems are just feeding off each other, and they've had a hard time getting anything done in the passing game. It's an issue and it's not going to get any easier."
Woodbery said he thought it would be risky to hand the offense over a true freshman at Florida, which has one of the best defenses in the country.
"You want a player to have a chance to succeed. Throwing a freshman in a situation where they're likely to fail would do nothing for the freshman and do nothing for Tennessee's quarterback situation going forward," he said.
