GVX Audio: South Alabama coach Joey Jones
Joey Jones was a star receiver at Alabama who became one of the state's top high school coaches.
He started building a Division III program at Birmingham-Southern before embarking on an even tougher challenge.
Jones was hired in 2008 to start a Division I football team from scratch at South Alabama.
The Jaguars (2-1), in their second year of NCAA Bowl Subdivision membership, play at Tennessee (2-2) on Saturday at Neyland Stadium (TV: SEC Network, 12:21 p.m.)
"It was my hometown. I love the city of Mobile. The chance to start a Division I program was the opportunity of a lifetime for me," Jones said. "That's the way I looked at it. We have some good times coming."
