A Wisconsin high school principal in town to watch Jeronne Maymon play basketball died Tuesday night at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Bruce Dahmen, principal at Madison Memorial High School since 2005, collapsed in the stands prior to Tennessee’s 67-58 loss to Florida, UT coach Cuonzo Martin confirmed Wednesday morning.

Mr. Dahmen was in town to watch Maymon, a UT senior and graduate of Madison Memorial.

The State Journal newspaper of Madison also confirmed the death.

“He embodied everything about this school and the community that supported Memorial,” Jeremy Schlitz, the school’s athletic director, told the State Journal.

Staff gathered at the school late Tuesday night to mourn the loss, according to the State Journal.

Maymon was not aware of Mr. Dahmen’s death during the game, according to assistant coach Kent Williams.

“We knew something happened before the game,’’ Williams said Wednesday on the New Sentinel’s Sports Page radio show. “We didn’t know who it was. But then after the game we were told who it was so we approached Jeronne about it. I know he took it tough.’’

Tim Maymon, Jeronne’s father, wasn’t at the game, but said Wednesday that Mr. Dahmen and his wife were on an anniversary trip and decided to stop in Knoxville and surprise Jeronne.

“I know Jeronne did look up (during warm-ups) and see them in attendance,’’ Tim Maymon said. “He took it kind of hard.

“Mr. Dahmen was a mentor and he was a vital part of the community. He sent a lot of boys to college to play baseball and basketball.’’

WOW! Things just haven't gone well for Jeronne this year. My heart goes out to him. I can only hope he finds the strength to stay positive and keep working hard on the court and in the classroom. Tough times don't last, but tough people DO! Keep your head up, young man, and thanks for being a Vol!

Very sad. Prayers go out to the principal's family. Maymon played his heart out last night, and left it all on the court. He didn't score a lot of points, but his presence was felt. He blocked shots, hustled, played good defense, dove after loose balls, etc. I've always liked him, and wish him nothing but the best, wherever his future takes him.

+1 My 12 year old son looked at me with about 5 minutes left last night and said, "If we win, Maymon is the MVP." I could only agree. The way he played last night is exactly what I am trying to get my son's basketball team to do. I don't care if we win or lose as long as they leave it all on the court.

May God be with the family and Maymon at this time. Some things are more important that just basketball and this is a great reminder of that. Our prayers are going up for all connected with this man which obviously influenced so many.

Peace, grace and mercy is needed at this time. This may add extra motivation for Maymon to finish strong!! What does not destroy us only makes us stonger!! GO VOLS!!!
