There’s a mystery voice in the background of the Southern California recruiting war room on National Signing Day and it’s not complimentary to Tennessee’s elite running back prospect Jalen Hurd.

A short video of USC’s war room was posted on the athletic department’s official Instagram account every time a player signed with the Trojans.

In one video, a snippet of conversation was picked up in the background. The discussion was about Hurd, who had just been mentioned on an ESPN broadcast that was playing in USC’s war room.

An off-camera voice says, “Jalen Hurd is so soft and terrible. I don’t know why he (unintelligible).”

The video had been live on USC’s Instagram feed for two weeks but the detail was noticed by fans, who spread the video on social media on Monday.

The identity of the male voice is uncertain, although the overwhelming consensus on Twitter was that it was USC receivers coach Tee Martin, a legendary quarterback at Tennessee. Martin interviewed for a job at Tennessee after the 2012 season but ultimately decided to remain at USC. He was retained by new USC coach Steve Sarkisian after Lane Kiffin was fired.

Jayson Swain, a Knoxville radio personality on 1180-AM who played with Martin at Tennessee, relayed a message on Monday from Martin on his Twitter account.

“I’ve never had any dealings with Jalen Hurd and wish him nothing but the best at Tennessee,” Martin said, according to Swain.

The video was deleted Monday afternoon and USC issued an apology on its Twitter feed.

“USC Athletics apologizes for an inappropriate comment overheard on a video created on National Signing Day,” the tweet said.

That sounds about right, blame it on Tee Martin so Tennessee fans will have less reason to hate USC. I don't but it for one second.

I don't hate USC half as much now that Kiffin is gone. Sounds like one of their coaches is a little jealous to me. Glad we got Hurd.

Dumb comment by USC us dumb. Happens every day all around the country. Nothing to see here.

Jayson Swain was a freshman in 2003. Tee Martin was a senior in 1999. They both played at Tennessee but they did not play "together" at Tennessee.

If it was Tee Martin, I hope he never gets another chance to return Rocky Top. A VFL doesn't say stuff like that. The arrogance of that comment is astounding.

Come on guys T is originally from LA (lower Alabama)so if he is guilty then so mode it be. Only time will tell if the statement is true or false and the only fella who can prove or disapprove that is Jalen not you or I.
Opinions are like butt holes everybody has one and mine is different that the one from SC.

If Jalen is so soft and terrible why were all of those other schools recruiting him so hard? Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, LSU and many others offered.

I'm all smiles...thinkin' Mr. Hurd has just picked up a burr under his saddle.

Go Team #118!

Me too! lol If Tee Martin was the culprit, then I say screw him, hope he stays in LA. He has had his chance to coach on Rocky Top. Maybe some day Mr. Hurd will get the opportunity to show him if he is soft or not.

Get well Jalen and then well see how soft you are......not.

It would be nice if 3-4 years on we could meet the Condoms in a playoff game.

But never for the sake of revenge. Only to say "we're baaaaaaaaaaaaack".

given our bitterness towards Tee Martin for the way the disrespectful way he treated the Tennessee program when he "interviewed" for the assistant's job here a couple of years ago, i'd say this just adds fuel to the fire. as a long-time Vol fan, I have not cared for the snub some of our ex-players have given their alma mater concerning coaching positions.
