KNOXVILLE — With 2014 National Signing Day two weeks in the rearview mirror, Ryan Callahan came on the News Sentinel Sports Page Tuesday morning to talk about future recruiting classes for the Tennessee football program with host Vince Ferrara and News Sentinel reporter Jesse Smithey.

Emmit Gooden, a defensive end from Haywood High School in West Tennessee, committed to Tennessee on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014. Gooden will be part of the 2016 class.

“That’s a big pickup early on for Tennessee,” said Callahan. “A guy who really has a chance to be one of the - maybe the very top player in the state in the 2016 class.

“A guy who’s already 6’4”, 257 pounds, so not hard to envision him being a pretty big, pretty effective defensive lineman. Doesn’t play the greatest competition out in his area in West Tennessee out at Haywood High School in Brownsville, but a guy who’s going to have every bit of the physical ability you need in the SEC.”

Jesse Smithey pointed out a certain “sneaky good” quality about the 2015 in-state class for Tennessee and asked Callahan to comment on those players.

“It’s an impressive class. The last class - the 2014 class - it’s really deep and really strong at the top. I think you’re going to look back on that and be impressed by the number of quality players that come out of it and obviously Tennessee signed several in-state 4 star players that were a part of its class.

“In 2015, there’s a really good number of just quality players who will have a chance to play somewhere at a fairly major Division I college.”
