KNOXVILLE — Mike Szvetitz, sports editor at the Opelika-Auburn News, joined Sports Page host Vince Ferrara and News Sentinel sports columnist John Adams on Tuesday to talk about the BCS National Championship game between Florida State and Auburn on Jan. 6, 2014.

Auburn had what Szvetitz thought of as "the definite special teams advantage." When he considered how the team had played all season and how strong they started off in last night's championship game, Szvetitz said he was surprised that Auburn fell to ACC's Florida State.

"Obviously, the 100-yard kickoff return was what really flipped the whole entire game, actually. And that was what really gave the momentum to Florida State, even though Auburn came down and scored a little bit, with a minute and something left," he said. "It was the special teams that made a difference, and I would have thought, if it came down to special teams, Auburn would win that."

John Adams said he thought Auburn made a lot of mistakes on offense and asked Szvetitz to weigh in with his take.

"They left a lot of points on the field," he said. "They never really established their pace. They never got that hurry-up, no-huddle going to where you could tell, in games like Georgia, games like Alabama, where they really wore people down."
