GVX Audio: Ryan Callahan of govols247.com - Jan. 8, 2014
KNOXVILLE — Wednesday on the News Sentinel Sports Page, host Vince Ferrara and co-host News Sentinel Tennessee football beat writer Evan Woodbery welcomed Ryan Callahan from govols247.com to the show to talk about Tennessee's newest crop of players who have enrolled early. Today is the first day of the spring semester at the University of Tennessee.
"We do expect a dozen guys already on campus to attend their first classes today," Callahan said about the newest crop of Tennessee players. "Still nothing final on Dontavius Blair and Joe Henderson — those guys are still finishing up, or in Joe Henderson's case, he already has finished up some online courses. He's just waiting to hear back from the NCAA to get final word on that."
"I think the deadline to attend their first classes isn't until January 17 or so, so there's still plenty of time for those guys to get on campus and take care of what they need to do and be cleared."
Woodbery points out Tennessee head coach Butch Jones' strategy to get as many new recruits to start classes mid-year instead of waiting until the summer semester or later, and he asks Callahan to weigh in on that approach.
"It's especially important for Tennessee this year, but I kind of think it's always important. It's kind of been a growing trend for kids who are able to do it," Callahan said. "We always get asked these days, whenever a kid commits, is this guy going to be an early enrollee? And the reality is not every school system in America allows it."
Callahan mentions that in many cases, these new players are coming right out of high school and are actually forgoing their final semesters in high school. That means giving up prom and sometimes even graduation for these seniors, which is not a small sacrifice.
