A game that appeared to be headed toward another lopsided Tennessee men’s basketball victory instead turned into a heartbreaking loss at the Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday night.

Texas A&M reserve forward Antwan Space hit a 3-pointer with seven seconds left and Jordan McRae’s heave never made it to the rim as the Aggies won 57-56.

A stunned crowd fell silent as it sunk in: UT’s 14-point first-half lead had been overcome.

Texas A&M improved to 11-4, 2-0 in the SEC. The Vols fell to 10-5, 1-1.

While Space hit the shot that won the game, it was A&M forward Jamal Jones who carried the Aggies back from seemingly certain defeat. He scored 23 points on 8-of-19 shooting, and made five of 10 3-pointers.

That was the offensive spark the Aggies needed after they failed to do much of anything in the first half. Their 18 first-half points were the fewest the Vols had surrendered all season. UT’s stellar defense in the first 20 minutes overshadowed its struggling offense, which never got into sync, largely thanks to two starters — Jordan McRae and Jarnell Stokes — being in foul trouble.

Still, UT had a 56-54 lead with 31 seconds to play. But Jeronne Maymon missed two free throws that would have iced the game, and Space hit the shot that sent his teammates flooding onto the court.

Only two Vols, Antonio Barton (12) and Josh Richardson (11) reached double-digits. McRae, UT’s leading scorer, was whistled for multiple offensive fouls, including one that gave the Aggies the ball back with 17 seconds to play. A&M failed to capitalize on that turnover, but got a second chance seconds later.

The Vols turned the ball over 16 times.

No more thinking we need a coach..This game was 100 proof of that need.

The worst loss I may have ever seen from a Tennessee team. Just pathetic. No defense the last 10 minutes. Especially when it came to cutting off the drive down the lane. No consistency, missed free throws down the stretch, no heart, no fire, no toughness. Just a pitiful effort. This team will almost definitely not make the NCAA Tournament. This loss more than offsets the LSU win and I just don't see this team winning any meaningful games the rest of the way. Beating Georgia, SC, Ark, Auburn, Miss St. just won't mean anything. If they do get a big win, a big IF, they will surely lose one or two games to bad teams to offset the win. This team is done.

A & M had one, and only one, chance to beat the Vols. A slow low scoring game. Cuonzo played right into their hands. At least a dozen fastbreak opportunities squandered. Please begin contract negotiations with coach Pearl.

With the talent this team has and based on the teams they've played so far, Tennessee should be no worse than 14 - 1 right now. The Wichita St. game is the only loss that is acceptable. No other team they've played is better than average and Tennessee has better talent than each of those other teams. Lack of effort in all phases has cost this team 4 losses. Just no consistency, no heart, no toughness. Just a shame that such talent is being wasted.

Folks - PEARL will never be back at UT but neither will Martin after this season. This Team proved it was just a bunch of whiners when the officiating or plays didn't go their way. They deserved to loose this game.

Dave Hart Need to place a Call to Bruce pearl Now!! start negotiations with him before he goes to another SEC school another year of this you might as well bring back Buzz cause the stands will be empty and bring back the curtains for upper deck.

Losses and lack of effort have already caused attendance to drop each of the last 3 years. This loss will make it a lot worse. Tennessee will just about have to go on a 10 winning streak to change fan's minds. There is no trust in this team at all now and it was iffy before tonight.

10 "game" winning streak.

CCM may be one of the worst bench coaches I have seen in a while. He is just not a good game coach, period.

I don't think Pearl will be back at Tennessee, although he would kill it…again! However, did you ever think Louisville would hire Petrino again?

There does not seem to be the attention to detail on the little things that separate the best teams from the average ones. We will be mired in mediocrity unless or until this team decides to have the sense of urgency to bring full effort and intensity and play smarter from here on out.

I don't think there is any chance of Pearl coming back either, but Pearl or any other good coach, would have this team in the top 10, top 15 at worst and would be about to take Tennessee to it's 10th straight NCAA Tournament. What wasted talent we have.

TommyJack writes:

Have really tried to support CCM. Just don't see any improvement. I'm sure the players want to win, but their focus seems to wax and wane.

Folks this is just a continuation of a UT tradition. They build up the hope of their fans and then drop us. At least this team does not build us up to great heights before they do their thing.

Everyone who says Bruce will never be back make me sick ! I know all the reasons, If we are that stupid we deserve what we have and we should shut up and live with what we have.

I'm tired of paying a top price , $30 a ticket, for an inferior product. After this game, I posted my season tickets in the lower level for all remaining games for sale on Craigslist. I doubt I even receive one inquiry.

You make a very good point..

Guys, I'm as disappointed as anybody, not least because I did and even still do believe that this team can make the Big Dance. If the season so far hasn't shown it beyond all doubt, there is just a LOT of volatility in college basketball these days. There is just no way to know how it will all sort out.

Still, almost no matter what they do from here on out will erase the feeling that the team has underachieved. We fans can't care more about how the team plays than the coaches and players do. It's all up to them now how they want to be remembered.
