KNOXVILLE — Brent Beaird of Lindy's Sports and Gator Bait joined Sports Page host Vince Ferrara and News Sentinel basketball writer Ben Frederickson on Wednesday to talk about the SEC.

As Ferrara noted, it's a busy off season in the SEC and there are several note-worthy coaching changes underway.

Kurt Roper, who formerly coached at Duke, was hired as the Gators' new offensive coordinator.

"From what we hear, it was a solid hire. He's done a good job at Duke. He's coached three 3,000-yard passers," Beaird said.

Over at Vanderbilt, there are reports that St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is interviewing for the head coaching job. Beaird addressed some other possible candidates for that position.

"I'll tell you who I would go after," Beaird said. "Mark Hudspeth of Louisiana Lafayette, used to be with Mississippi State. I think eventually he's going to end up with an SEC team. Obviously we've heard a good bit about Derek Mason, the Stanford D coordinator."

"Some others that may or may not have legs," as Beaird put it, are Jim McElwain, Colorado State head coach and Mike MacIntyre, University of Colorado head coach, who formerly played at Vanderbilt and whose father, George MacIntyre, was Vanderbilt head coach 1979 to 1985.
