KNOXVILLE — On Thursday’s edition of the Sports Page with Evan Woodbery and Vince Ferrara, News Sentinel high school sports reporter Jesse Smithey was on hand to talk about this evening’s PrepXtra Football Awards Banquet. One local player, Fulton’s Xavier Hawkins, will be awarded the PrepXtra Offensive Player of the Year.

“He was just one of many guys that we considered for the PrepXtra Offensive Player of the Year. You look around the area and you see a guy like Anderson County running back Matthew Fox who rushed for 2400 yards or Maryville quarterback John Garrett who in his first year completed 75% of his passes, only threw one interception, rushed for 1000 yards, threw for 2000-something, then led his team to a state title.

"But when you look at the impact that Xavier Hawkins made as a receiver, as a wildcat quarterback - or as they say, the “wild hawk” - as a running back, as a cornerback, as a return man - nobody had a bigger impact on a football game that Xavier Hawkins. He scored a touchdown in every single game this year, had 15 touchdowns combined in the playoffs, had that remarkable 4-touchdown performance in the state championship against Giles County.

"And of course, Xavier recently committed verbally to Oregon State University, so hands down, just a great, great season by Xavier."
