Lady Vols picked second in SEC softball, behind Florida

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Tennessee has been picked to finish second in Southeastern Conference by a vote of 13 SEC head coaches in the annual preseason poll, which was released on Monday.

Florida has been predicted to win the 2014 Southeastern Conference softball title. The Gators, who received 10 first-place votes, finished the 2013 campaign with a 58-9 overall record, leading the nation in wins, and capturing the program's fourth SEC title, advancing to the NCAA Women's College World Series for the fifth time since 2008.

Tennessee, which went 52-12 in 2013 and finished as 2013 national runner-up, received two first place votes. The Lady Vols are currently ranked preseason No. 1 in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll. Alabama, which finished the 2013 campaign with a 45-15 overall record and an NCAA Super Regional appearance, earned one first-place vote and is predicted to finish third in the SEC.

Eight of the 13 SEC softball teams appear among the nation's top 25 in the USA Today/NFCA Preseason Poll.

Points for the poll were awarded on a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-11-12 basis. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.

SEC teams begin softball action on February 6. The 2014 SEC Softball Tournament will take place May 7-10 in Columbia, S.C., at Carolina Softball Stadium at Beckham Field.

Tennessee opens the 2014 season on Feb. 7 against Northern Colorado in Statesboro, Ga. UT makes its home debut on March 5 with a doubleheader against Wright State and begins SEC play on March 14 at Arkansas.
