Former Tennessee football coach Johnny Majors had a heart valve procedure at The University of Tennessee Medical Center on Thursday, according to an email released by spokesperson Jim Ragonese on Friday.

Ragonese said that according to Majors’ doctors, the procedure went well. He added that the 78-year-old Majors is recovering at the hospital and an update is expected to be released after the weekend.

Majors played halfback for the Vols from 1954-56.

After coaching at Iowa State (1968-72) and guiding Pittsburgh to a national championship in 1976, Majors returned to UT and was coach through 1992 when he underwent heart surgery.
