The University of Tennessee named former Purdue player and Missouri State coach Cuonzo Martin as its 18th men's basketball coach on Sunday, March 27, 2011, as a successor to Bruce Pearl, who was fired Monday, March 21, 2011, with an NCAA investigation hanging over the program.
After taking over Missouri State in 2008, Cuonzo Martin's teams steadily improved from a 3-15 Missouri Valley Conference record in his first season to 15-3 in MVC play his final campaign, a school record, recording the first MVC title in school history. Overall, the Bears improved from 11-20 his first season in 2008-09 to 24-12 in 2009-10 to 26-9 in his last season at Missouri State. Cuonzo Martin's final team at Missouri State finished 7th nationally in forcing turnovers per game, while leading the MVC in three-point shooting, assist-to-turnover ratio and finishing second in the conference in scoring and scoring margin.
As a player at Purdue, Cuonzo Martin shot 45.9 percent from three-point range (179-for-390) his junior and senior seasons, helping the Boilermakers win back-to-back Big 10 titles.
Cuonzo Martin also has appeared at Tennessee's Thompson-Boling Arena as both a player and a coach, as the Vols defeated his Missouri State team 60-56 in the 2010-11 season, while Cuonzo Martin set a Purdue record for three-pointers in a game with 8 against Kansas in the March 24, 1994, regional semifinals in Knoxville.
