2011 SEC swimming coach of the year John Trembley became the University of Tennessee's head coach in 1988, but his ties to the program date back much further. John Trembley was first at UT as part of Ray Bussard's staff from 1975-79 before leaving to take over as head coach at Mercersburg Academy.
While a swimmer for Tennessee from 10970-74, John Trembley won five SEC championships, nine NCAA titles, earned 20 All-America honors and set three American records in the 50 freestyle and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. He was also the first swimmer to win five crowns in one NCAA event.
Since returning to Tennessee, John Trembley has helped guide the Vols to more than 10 each of top-3 SEC and top-10 NCAA finishes.
Trembley was fired on Jan. 3, 2012, during the middle of the season for "gross misconduct."
