A bicyclist makes his way across the top of Norris Dam. Completed in 1936 as the first project of the newly formed Tennessee Valley Authority, the structure stretches 1,860 feet across and stands 265 feet high above the Clinch River, creating the largest reservoir on a tributary of the Tennessee River and providing 809 miles of shoreline and 33,840 acres of water surface. A popular tourist and recreation destination, in 2005 TVA opened a visitor center at the top of the dam staffed by TVA retiree volunteers and that features a history of Norris, hydropower operations and TVA’s management of the river system. The center is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
