I believe it was Vince Lombardi who said it best, "Dancing is a contact sport. Football is a hitting sport." Football is a physical game that is often violent with bone breaking hits. The only way to get a hitting mindset is to hit.

I would have to say I DO totally agree in this situation. When a program like ours is starting over with the depth chart and you are giving freshman a chance to start I just don't know any other way to do it! How else are you gonna see what they are made of? Hit em hard boyz!!!!

Of course we should be having physical practices!!! Just like we say in the Army "Train as you Fight". If we are are wanting to become a better team we have to practice and practice hard, period.

GatorHater326 writes:

the one person that voted no they might get hurt had to be either a mother of one of the freshmen or someone from the ACLU lol this is football they're supposed to hit.

You Play like you Practice!!!!!!!!!! The Final Years of the Fulmer Era Shows that, plainly. If you PRACTICE SOFT, you PLAY SOFT. Enough said, lets move on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

after last season how could you say no??

Nick Saban has that mindset. He practices his teams hard. He was talking about how he utilized Julio Jones last year. It sounded similar to what Kiffin has been saying about his freshmen. They will expand the play book when they learn how to play in this league. So, for any of those bama posters that have been throwing off on Lane, he and saban have similar tactics. Lane has to get them ready for the wars of the SEC. They are going to get slobberknocked every week. Lane will want his team matching slobberknocker for slobberknocker. Its a physical sport, physical practice has to be utilized. If they have injuries now, they will definitely have them against hostile athletes. You have to get worn down in practice to get up for games. All good teams do that. Keep up the good work on the practice field, make your parents proud. GO VOLS!!!

Teams have to have an edge. Does anyone remember Spurrier's philosophy? His teams came out swinging in the first half. How many times did UT get it handed to them in the first half by his Gator coached teams. They were ready. I want UT out of the gate quickly. You have to practice well/hard in order to get that ability. I will say that the only time that I would question Kiffin's philosophy...is if we had very little depth at a particular position - but CLK will take appropriate measures if that is the case. So far, I think UT's practice techniques will definitely make them better...

Though, I don't think we have enough depth to go the "Junction Boys" route. Great TV movie!

This is the SEC!!! Better practice physical or stay at home.

I totally "slobberknocker" agree with you. It's time that the Vols got tough.

This team may not win but 6 or 7 games, but the other teams will leave the field having known they faced a UT team that didn't back down, give up or ran scared.

Injuries are a risk, but it's a necessary risk to make this team a whole lot better. I'd rather have a tough team minus the starting quarterback than a fully healthy bunch of pansies.

I am not one to knock anyone until they have done something to deserve it, but what are the 93 unsures and 4 nos thinking?

RJ you are dead on about Spurrier! I remember 1996 (I think) we lost 35-29. The closest blowout I have ever seen. Spurrier called the dogs off after half-time. We need to be the team that jumps on other teams. We need to dictate their offensive game plans.

I remember reading before the 94 season (again I think)the team motto was "Speed kills, power punishes." Our coaches made it a point to get faster, we finally became a very fast team, but then we got bullied by Nebraska in 97. What did Fulmer focus on? Getting tougher. I remember a post season quote saying he didn't want to get pushed around by another team again.

Over the last 8 or 9 years, that competitiveness and drive slowly faded. Fulmer became a coach insistent on having a "feel" for a team or game instead of lining up punching them in the mouth, then running over or around them. Look up playing not to lose and you will see the last 10 years of Fulmer's career.

From the look of things so far, Kiffin and company will play to win. We may get beat, and we may have our tails handed to us a few times, but we are at least going to look those teams in the eye and fight back every step of the way.

There is now a picture on the front screen that I'm sure is just a sample pick screen for a poll but it makes you think that the results for this poll are overwhelmingly unsure and No's being a lot closer to Yes votes. It's misleading, no picture would be better.

I wonder how many of the 61 people that voted no ever played football. Anybody that played at the high school level or higher knows the game is about hitting, hitting and more hitting. Even with the spread offenses and the greater emphasis on speed that is now part of the game, football is still a sport of violent collisions.

I ran track one year in high school and went straight into spring football. Even though I was in the best shape of my life as far as conditioning, I still had to get my body conditioned to hit again. These kids have been lifting and running all summer. If they aren't in shape by the time fall camp opens it's probably too late for them to help the team, so let the guys go and hit somebody. That's why most of them play the game.

Nice to see the change of pace.

Hit Someone and for the love of God Wrap Up! I got so tired of watching our defense bouncing off the ball carrier. I just laid a perfect form tackle on a guy here in the office, IM READY!!

Coaches can, and have, succeeded with exceedingly different styles. I coached basketball for several years, but I have never coached football. What I do know, is that you can win with about as many different approaches as there are coaches. The trick is to find the approach that works with the players you have. I am working on the assumption that the coaches know what they are doing. I have no reason to believe otherwise. Until these coaches fail miserably, then I can't be justified for condemning their techniques. In the same vein, until they are successful, any praise is just hot air. Let's face it, your/mine/media's excitement level is pretty much irrelevant. Ask me in December if I agree with the coaches approaches to practice. Then I can have an opinion rooted in fact. Anything else is just personal preference and that doesn't win football games.
