I didn't even bother with this poll. Why would I cast a vote when we haven't even gotten through next year's spring practice? With so much improvement seen in Crompton with this coaching staff, my vote would be to let the coaching staff decide....And not muddy the waters with opinions that do not matter at this time....And not create political hoopla with a bunch of nothing that matters garbage.

I promise you that no poll will affect anything these coaches do!

I've been keeping up with Nick Stephens since he came here from Flower Mound, TX. He is talented enough to lead. I like your assessment...we'll see how the chips fall.

To early to do a ranking of the QB's but based on the future past 2010 I hope Tyler Bray is 'all-world'

At least we have 4 choices in 2010, LOL.

The coaches will decide but I'm hoping it's Tyler by game number 3.

Like all of you, my opinion on things like this is irrelevant. CLK & staff will do the right thing; just seeing's Crompton's progress made me a believer.

I don't think it is unbelievable to think that Stephens will be the starter next year. He obviously has D1 skills or would have never been offered a scholarship at the University of Tennessee, and has been in the Kiffin system for a year. I think the job is his to lose! I was one of the few folks who stood by Crompton all year long when many wanted to bench him in favor of Stephens. Now, he is slated to possibly be a late second day draft guy. So it is hard for me to believe that this staff won't be able to get a another hard working senior ready to play.

Well said, CLK likes what he sees from Nick Stephens, but CLK also had to do this (stick with Jonathon in 09) so he can go out and keep recruiting talent to say, look what we did with this 2 QB system, we developed Crompton and CLK has gotten Nick ready to lead this team-- I agree the Offenbsive Line and Running game will be critical-- I hope that Taurean Poole gets a shot to have a solid 1-2 punch at RB, Oku wil become a solid slot receiver/special teamer-

Vol fans should feel good that they have several returners who know the system and what is expected to play each week or your position goes up for grabs--Stephens has come a long way and developed into a mature player since the Fulmer-Clawson Wyoming game. His arm looks very good and these additional bowl practices allows CLK, Chaney and Reeves to keep working with him just as they did with both he and Jonathon...JC turned much better then anyone expected, including me--just from what I see-- good luck to the vols

This team is gettign to understand how to get preapred and what it takes to win

I don't know who will start and at this point I don't care. What I do care about is a fear that throwing Tyler Bray in there too soon could be a bad mistake. With a new OL that has little or no experience it could really magnify the Freshman errors that Tyler will make. Plus with an inexperienced offense line, the chance of a major injury could really hurt tyler's performance down the road. I remember Alan Cockrell Playing as a Freshman. He had all of the tools, Strong Arm, Leadership, intelligence, etc. He had a terrible knee injury against Auburn(By the way it was Pat Dye's first season as Auburn's Head Coach). He never appeared to be the same. Don't get me wrong, he was successful but, he could have been an All American. He was that good before the injury. I don't know if his injury had anything to do with it, but he left early to play baseball. I don't believe he ever made it to the majors.

How could anyone believe that Simms wouldn't have been offered if Stephens was gonna start next year? That's insane. Stephens is a senior next year, are you telling me they don't need someone to come in behind him???

Stephens job to lose you mean...and yes, he has enough skills, if he is coachable enough, to do the job if they can recreate a functioning offensive line.

I'd say Sim's and Bray, both of whom will be in spring camp, will be pushing him come next summer, and the one who puts the most into film work and who best reponds to "coaching" will wind up the starter by the Oregon game..

Staff has no faith in Stephens, so it probably will be one of the other three.

dhwright64 writes:

Hey, here's an idea. Let's see how they do in practice and go with whoever is playing the best then. Asking a bunch of armchair coaches who should be the QB at this point is kind of asinine, isn't it. Coach Kiffin hasn't made his mind up yet I'm sure.

carbonzip writes:

Can Kiffin "Cromptenize" Stephens and turn him into a pro prospect?

I say pick a horse and ride him its going to be Bray in the long run so less go with him.

vols2012 writes:

If u havent seen Tyler Bray's tapes from high school, ESPN.com has some from the Elite 11 and his own high school tapes. His release is incredibley quick, he gets major heat on the ball, and he also is very accurate. As an added bonus, he can run the ball when he needs to; he wont fly by many LB's or DB's, but he could extend the drive with his legs if he needed to. However, with the lack of OL depth, I think it would be smart to redshirt him or at most put him as a minimal starter. Starting at QB with an OL like ours will be will be really tough for any QB.

GBO and I hope to see many Vol fans in Atlanta with me!

Hopefully we will start whoever gives us the best chance to win.

I would prefer to start a younger guy over an older guy at this point. That is not my usual preference, but as we are in a rebuilding situation I would like the learning possibilities that can lead to long term success. So, go Bray (or whoever the coaches decide on) !

Go Vols!

CLK knows that our starting Q.B. next year will be lucky to survive the year and he doesn't want that to be the fate for Tyler Bray!Look for Tyler to get the free year and step into a developing situation that ends with him leading us to a National Title run in his Jr. and Sr. years!I think that the coming year will be very tough while things look better in two and the corner turned and the afterburners ignited after that!I hope the "Boys on the Hill" run CLK out of town if we are not in the SEC Title Hunt by year four!

I think your right and NS will prove it in the spring, then just like JC gained confidence, so will NS! I am pumped about CLK and staff coaching JC up and I think the position coaches really proved their mettle coaching up what was left after the defections and dismissals. Now we add Kippy, the WR's coach when Peyton was here. I can say SUCCESS is in our future, if this plays out like it looks it can, when we have a few more stellar recruiting years like this year. GBO!!!!

One thing we can glean from this year...CLK knows what he wants and knows how to evaluate it from spring practice. He won't give us details and no matter how much we question or doubt his choice he will not Fulmer his eventual choice and will support him wholeheartedly....I trust this process and will cheer the choice when Lane deigns to announce it.
