Pearl is da man...Keep up the good work CBP...

I think Coach Pearl is getting what he deserves. All the coaches that make more than him are overpaid.
tnqball writes:
The revenue that he is bringing in does not compare to his salary. He is being underpaid just because of that alone.
87UTVOL writes:
HECK NO HE'S NOT OVERPAID!
He's right where he should be based on the market and other coach's salaries.
johnlg00#206211 writes:
IMHO, CBP is getting about what he deserves, BUT I will be somewhat disappointed if the team is not a good deal sharper this coming season than last season. They no longer have the excuse of having to blend in so many new faces OR not realizing what style this particular team plays best OR not knowing what each player does best. Although it is possible that CBP will have more talented teams in the future, it is unlikely he will ever have a more experienced team with, what, five seniors? If future players are significantly more talented, they will be far less likely to stay four years. Anything less than an outright SEC championship and making the Great Eight in the NCAAs will be a disappointment, IMHO. After next year, UK may be too much for anyone else in the SEC to handle, at least until Calipari gets them on major probation.

the fact that more than two people have commented about a story on basketball tells me he is worth every penny.

No. Next question...

Well, $1.9 mil. doesn't sound like chicken scratch. $500,000 for endorsements $475,000 for ... dang, i gotta git out ma' calculater! (Point being he is doing alright for himself.)

KNS stirring it up. Is this the best you can do?

126 votes for over-paid, what a crock! For the first time since Ray Mears, Tennessee is one of the elite teams in the SEC on a cosistent basis. Pearl has won more conference games by double digits over the runner-up since he became the coach at Tennessee. The man is worth half his salary just as a promoter and goodwill ambassador for the basketball program and the university. I wonder how many of those 126 votes were cast by trolls from other teams?

Is Bruce Pearl OVERPAID? Does a skeleton have a bony as*?

bruce is good!!
RockyMountainVolunteer writes:
Pearl is an average coach and will be making an average salary compared to what the elite coaches will be making these days thanks to Calipari's contract at Kentucky. Anyone that thinks Pearl is overpaid is nuts. It's not all about wins or losses folks or Pearl would definitely not be making this kind of money. Fans are showing up at the games for the most part and has a lot of the fan base thinking about basketball now. Hopefully Pearl will have this years team ready to play because it was very obvious to all Vol fans last year that they were not.

Einstein leaves school because he can't afford it. A ball Jockey gets a free pass? Will never contribute to society in any way. Do we have ACADEMIC or ATHLETIC Colleges? Time to separate the two?

Go Coach Pearl!!! and Love the new site :) :) :)
dlobh writes:
You have a valid point. The educations of willing but unable to pay students are more important than basketball. However, whether it's right or wrong, it's the state of major college athletics in the 21st Century. If Pearl's team just puts a little over 6,000 extra butts in the approximately 15 home games at TBA at $20 a ticket, he pays his salary. Go back and look at the average attendance pre-Bruce versus during his tenure. He is easily paying for his salary and then some. The money they're paying Pearl wouldn't be coming in if not for his success.

UT is stung with cutbacks for basic program support. NO coach should be getting a raise, especially one that is making $$$ that 99.99% of Tennesseeans (or US citizens) can only dream of. Again, Go Vols--but WTF?
Bigger_Al writes:
Given that UT Sports pays for itself and contributes millions of dollars to the University in general...
I think you can figure the rest out for yourself.
Also, not sure if you should be the judge as to how much a kid will ultimately contribute to society, eh?
camoman270#222859 writes:
definitely NOT overpaid

He's the only men's coach that has won an SEC championship in the last 4 years. Thanks Foolmore.

A very, very weak SEC. Yes, he is way overpaid.

Dont know.

Amen to that. And once we get into the tourneys we are done. What in the heck do people see in this clown? Don't people watch the games?
vol4gzus writes:
Coach Fulmer is no longer the COACH just in case you didn't know. Give it up and move on.
On topic ,expectations should be higher for this year than last with youngins a year older/maturer and Tyler still here as well. GO VOLS!!!

The ultimate litmus test is Big Success in the Big Dance. He has none( marginal). He is, however, loud, egotistical, a showman and a media darling who reminds me a bit of Vitale. 2MM a year is what UT thinks he's worth, and the Athletic Department pays its own way plus more, so, c'est la vie.
Meanwhile, on the academic side, the University announced 7/8/09 the canceling of numerous fall 2009 math classes- all levels- due to budget restraints/termination of teachers...and math has not been the only area in the past 6 months. Many students are now forced to stay an entire additional semester for one class instead of graduating.
But, nice addition to the football stadium, and Pearl gets a raise.
Signs of the times...

The idiots on this page who say Coach Pearl is overpaid are just plain stupid and they think the rest of us don't know it.
If he wasn't paid what other top coaches in the league or even in the country were paid and we had a mediocre team, these same idiots would be saying "oh, let's pay more to get a better coach here."
It is what it is.
The man has restored Ray Mears Glory to the basketball program and the school, and he's made it a force to be reckoned with around the league.
BTW.. those same idiots would rather TAKE the penny change at the convenience store, than leaving it in the little drop thing to help out others.
tennezz writes:
What is wrong with some of you people, Do you not remember when our basketball program was down and seaching for a winning coach! Coach Pearl has put UT basketball back on the map, He has brought back the excitement and ticket sales! Basketball is paying its own way and making money! He has brought us SEC championships, NCAA tournament play every year, He even won 20+ games in a rebuilding year! Coach Pearl is worth what ever it takes to keep him here! I`m back on the bandwagon for the first time since Bernard King left!
Colliervol writes:
Ditto shoal. The answer is a resounding "NO". But instead of "next question", you should have said "Next stupid question". These polls just get worse and worse. Who thinks them up anyway? Whoever it is should be fired.

Perhaps this is a question that should be revisited after the 09-10 season.

Pearl is a a point that he has some hard calls to make. Do I build my team with the bottom of the "2-years and gone" guys or some of the best "4 years and coach 'em up" guys?
voice0reason writes:
To look at the on the court improvement the basketball team has shown literally from the day Coach Pearl took over is nothing less than un-believable. The promise the current team has as well as the fact that UT basketball is now in a position to recruit the best players in the country is remarkable, even unthinkable a few years back. All of this while running a clean program from an NCAA perspective. This alone justifies what the university is paying him but add to that over $2 million a year in ADDITIONAL revenue !Bruce is without question the most UNDERPAID coach in the country !!!
