I say second maybe 3rd, they are going to surprize some people.

I agree with senracjr. I think they will be either second or third. I predict Florida to be first, and either us or Georgia to be second. Georgia's losing both Stafford and Moreno, of course, who were both big SEC players, so it may be tough for them to be as good as they were last year. I definitely don't see us being behind South Carolina, Vandy or Kentucky. I say either second or third... let's say second :]

reidtownriverrat writes:

second. our defence beats dawgs, lose close one to flawda

mbible1utk#324980 writes:

i think second... Georgia will have some time to get good before we play them, but they'll be coming up here. I don't think everything is in place to beat Florida, but who knows... if we really come in to that game with a clever scheme and a positive attitude, it's not like we CAN'T win...

VOLuptuous writes:

I just don't see where all of this love for Georgia is coming from...they are replacing a lot....they have the potential to have the same caliber year that we did last year. I would be willing to wager that USC will have a better year than UGA this year

3rd or 4th.. could be a rough year

Third, maybe second if the planets are aligned.

Who is so optimistic to vote them 1st and who is so negative to vote them 6th... I look for SC to be highly competitive and to beat GA in their head to head early in season... Either one of these will probably place 2nd, so I vote the Vols for 3rd..

tdtnsee writes:

I think second, the vols will be in better shape physically, they will understand our offensive scheme better this year and so far the whole team has bought in to what Coach Kiffin and Co. Are selling, add to that the decipline that they've installed and you can't help being optomistic that we will finish right behind Florida. We are fling right under the radar, they all will have chips on there shoulders and will come out ready and fired up!!!! GO VOLS!!!!!

seofeed writes:

The only questions are quarterback and receiver play. Depending on those we could go from 2nd to 4th. GO VOLS!

Hard o to pick higher than fourth without a proven qb

I think you will see marked improvement in our QB play, Hardesty has had some injuries but he has put in some good runs at TN. Tauren Poole is a sophmore and has been very impressive at times!! As for freshmen, I would look to see Bryce Brown early and often as the season progresses as I have heard he is the real deal! Additionally there have been alot of freshmen impact players especially at RB. I pick the Vols to finish second as GA I think is going to try a fifth year senior at QB who was benched in 06 in the middle of the game against TN cause he threw 2 picks in the first half which is when Stafford stepped in and took his spot! So look for GA to move to another Freshmen QB by midway through the season again! And SC has underachieved each of the last 2 seasons.

I picked them 4th also. Just can't see Crompton getting that much better. Another unknown must be Kiffins coaching ability we just don't know. Only 5 wins with the Raiders that may mean nothing however the Raiders got better after he left. I look for the Raiders to content for the AFC west this year.

bodie910 writes:

3rd. QB play is most important factor. Vols have some playmakers on both sides but no game breaking WR and are thin at DL. Behind LSU, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia in overall talent. We have EB and a solid secondary, good DE's, decent OL, and are better than '08 at RB. Let's get started.

FWBVol writes:

I picked us third, but I don't think it's too much of a stretch to see us finish second.

I think our defense and a decent running game should be good enough for us to take the third place finish. If Crompton or Stephens steps up at QB we could easily finish second.

Other than Tebow and Sneads this is one of the weakest years I've seen as far as proven quarterbacks in the SEC. I think that could play into Tennessee's favor. I also think Lane and Monte have a few tricks up their sleeves that will surprise a lot of people.

Mrsknowitall writes:

Come on Guys,

Lane is spouting "play well" vs winning already!! He looked like he had caught a bug when he was giving his TV interview. I think that look said it all and that we are going to have a rougher year than he was letting on at first.

I see it about like you do, i.e., voted us third but wouldn't be shocked with second. I WOULD be shocked if we finished behind the Chickens. The only way Carolina finishes higher than fourth is if Georgia bites it big time, which I really don't expect to happen.

Pigs may learn to fly and horses learn to sing, but there is NO WAY we are going to be as bad as last year! Last year, we couldn't convert a 3d down or prevent one; we couldn't get kick returns and we couldn't stop any; we led the world in stupid motion, delay, and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties; and we quit in several games in which we were still in contention. I don't see ANY of those things happening to nearly the same degree this season. And the schedule is easier, if anything.

Let's look at it logically. How we do in SEC will depend on how well we play our Western Division opponents. We got to go at least 1-2 against Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss. Then we got to go 3-2 against the East - Florida, Georgia, SC, KY, Vandy. A good season would be 4-4 in SEC which gets us tied for 3rd probably. Swing games are Auburn, MS, SC & Dawgs. We really need a split. Let's see how our "O" does against UCLA which figures to be a descent defensive team. If we can run the ball well on them and pass for a few key 1st downs, and win the game we may have a chance to get to 7 wins and a low level bowl.

Chomp writes:

I think 4th is about right. They'll lose to Florida, SC, Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss.

With this new "dream team" coaching staff and easy schedule, it has to 1st. Coach em up.

Slystone writes:

It seems this time last year many predicted the Vols to finish high in the east. This season I believe 4th or 5th place is about right as realistically this team from a depth position is not better than last years Vols. It all rides on Crompton and just how good is Kiffin. We'll all find out soon.

Hacksaw57 writes:

Defense will determine the ranking. I pick the Vols fourth, maybe third. Second with Al Wilson on the sidelines as a "consultant". If we can score, the defense will determine our success.

1974Vol writes:

It will all come down to QB play. Only teams with proven QB's are Gators and Rebs. If Crompton could play anywhere near his 5* rating out of HS this could be a good season. Look for lots more low scoring defensive games across the SEC as few teams will have a QB who can lead an offense to big numbers.

5-3 in conference play. Not sure what place that will be.

If UCLA is anything like last year, I don't think it will be anything comparable to what we'll see from SEC teams. They were VERY SLOWWWWW.

Don't want to rehash old wounds, but all we had to do against them last year was keep running wide and they would never have won. It was like watching a high school game- our RB's turned the corner on their safeties, corners, LBs.
