Back in Black!

AWESOME!!!! It was exciting for the players and the fans alike. Okay, well...MOST of the fans...the 80% or so who aren't afraid of not sitting on their hands and mixing things up with some change.

I liked the jersey. However, I don't believe the helmet color matched. Should have gone with Orange or even black helmet.
volsgirl writes:
Love the black the change is good why not.........GO VOLS
PennVol writes:
Would've preferred the traditional white home pants with the black jerseys.
Jenna1009 writes:
I like the black Jersys with the orange pants. Won't want that every home game. IT was MUCH better than the orange jersy with orange pants combination.
mbible1utk#324980 writes:
I agree with the notion that they shouldn't do it ALL the time... but for a big time night home game every once in a while...why not? I think the only thing that would have been cooler is a black helmet with the orange T on the side. The white helmet just looked odd.
AugVol writes:
Leave the brand alone! I don't like the black jerseys. We are Orange and White with a little black trim on white jerseys. That's it.
UTmama writes:
They were great for Halloween and it would be ok for a big game like Alabama, etc. Wouldn't want them on a regular basis. Just special occassions. Props to Mike Hamilton for allowing it!
ebrownvol writes:
NO - to black jerseys. We are the "Big Orange", not the Big Black. Our colors are orange and white. It didn't look like our team on the field. PLEASE DON'T wear them again - EVER
DaveVol writes:
I didn't like the black, just didn't think they looked good. Glad Hamilton allowed it for a special event though.
All_Vol_in_GA writes:
If you're talking about looking like last year's team, you're right. This team looked like the fighting Vol teams I remember, regardless of the color of their jersey. Let's move on and celebrate the resurgence of Tennessee football!
vailvol writes:
loved it. would have loved it more with black pants with orange stripe, important thing is we won. don't do it ofter, perfect for halloween. players loved it, recruits loved it, props to coaching staff.

The Vols won . However we are "THE BIG ORANGE". No to the black .

Nice win. UGLY PHOOKIN' UNIES!!!!!!! White helmet w/orange, black jersey w/orange, orange pants w/white. GEEZ.

Special occasions only.

Loved the black jerseys!
It was for Halloween people! Calm down! We aren't going to wear them every game. Some of you are just pathetic complaining about the color of our jerseys instead of being happy that we just beat the #21 team in the country by 18 points! Kiffin is turning this team around! Quit complaining about jersey color! That is so childish and ridiculous!
DingoVol writes:
I think that bringing in the Lane/Monte combination was the best thing this University could have ever done. I am so impressed with the preperation and game planning that these coaches put together on a weekly basis. They get better every week and are going to win out. Can't wait til next year!
lastlap writes:
The fashion police are out I see. Who cares if they play that hard they can wear uniforms like Oregon for all I care. I can't believe what a bunch of whinners these fans are. Celebrate the win baby. We beat a top 25 team. Don't Worry. Be Happy.
efeezell#230909 writes:
if they start every game in a different jersey the way they did this one, i dont care if they wear pink
stantorini writes:
ONLY for games that fall on halloween! otherwise it is hideous...stick to orange & white!
pvvol writes:
I liked the black jerseys and the energy they created with the players and fans. Good thing we won...the jerseys would have been burned at mid-field after the game...lol.
MillisaAnn writes:
I love them!!!
UTBEATEMALL writes:
They weren't about to order new helmets at the last minute! If they had black helmets with the T on the side with a small T above the facemask with black and orange pants that would be hot-to-death!
537081 writes:
Don't get me wrong I love orange, but not to many people can realy say that the black wasn't fun. I would not be offened to see the black every once in a while.
chadavolic1976 writes:
I understand the traditionalist view on the jerseys, but they should also understand that this is 2009 and we have a new coach that is young and wants to make this a winning championship contending program. I do not want the TN colors to be changed, but what's the big deal about wearing a black and orange jersey every now and then. So I heard that some of the fans got up and left when they came out in black! Wow as far as I am concerned those fans can keep their butts out of Neyland from now on! Go Vols!!!
amstelman writes:
What an excellent touch for a Halloween game! LOVED IT!! They didn't spend the money on names or special helmets. WAY TO SPARK UP A TEAM AND ITS FANS!!
LowRider writes:
LOVED THE BLACK JERSEYS!!!! I think it looked BOLD and INTIMIDATING. I'd like to see them wear these atleast once or twice a year for a strategically scheduled game(s). I think it would mess with the opponents heads :)
hueypilot writes:
AT 62 and like most old farts, I did not favor the black jerseys, until I saw them. This OF was converted the second I saw them stream out of the tunnel. I also like the numbers only on the jerseys. You can see the numbers from my seats in the upper deck, and I would think numbers only works two ways. It says more about team than individual, and it would help spark program sales or at least more tips for the newskids handing out free KNS lineups. Black jerseys are cool for that very infrequent special occasion.
Go4Two writes:
I don't see other MAJOR programs screwing with their jerseys
BustaRhymes writes:
I thought they looked sharp – and are AOK for special occasions and big games. We’re going to look back at last night’s South Carolina game as a significant turning point for our team. Besides… some occasions just demand black tie… errr… black jerseys!
tennrich1 writes:
Only on rare occasions would I want to wear them....they were great for last night.
RJ_Vol writes:
Awful looking. Glad we won though. School colors are orange and white. Looked a little "thuggy."
dowhatsright writes:
The Black and Orange match the Band uniforms, so there is a precedent. If the players like them Great! Hamilton was smart to do this. It's a small thing and it signifies changes that are happening - New Times - a Fresh Start - a New Beginning. I think it's great. Let them wear them more if they play better in them. Isn't that the most important thing? To be motivated and play with enthusiasm.
V0LUNT33R writes:
One could argue that Oregon is a major program. As crazy as it might seem, Oregon started getting better and getting more recruits out of SoCal when they let Nike start going crazy with their jerseys. I thought the jerseys worked great for a Halloween night game, but I agree with some of the other posts. The black jerseys didn't do much for the orange pants and white helmets.
hertzberg#1375924 writes:
Yea I agree Halloween? Geez, come on, grow up players! Besides, we are the big Orange!
TennesseeGorilla writes:
I agree the way they came out in orange for pregame but came back out in the black was cool, make it mean something. It fired those boys up last night!
orangenwhitefan writes:
This "Big Orange" fan base is really starting to get pathetic. Everybody knows that we are the "Big Orange". The black jersey looked good, added MUCH needed excitement, and was fitting for the occasion. It was requested by the players and kudos to Lane Kiffin and Mike Hamilton for making it happen. Now that Crompton has started holding his own, you find something else to complain about. But this is really weak. Some of you remind me why i got a divorce.
volhome#407234 writes:
The look was perfect for a Halloween night game. The white helmet was a bit stark against the jersey (maybe a black stripe to complete the look?). Don't use them regulary, though, or they are no longer special, just run-of-the-mill. I'd recommend keeping them for all home Halloween weekend games, and that's about all.
Punt_Formation_Leaverton writes:
Love them but only on Halloween!

The Black Jerseys, sans players' names a la Penn State, were a tremendous Team statement. I think they blew everybody's minds. Way cool , and they should definitely be brought back for big games like Florida and Alabama. It's our equivalent of Notre Dame's Irish Green jerseys. And don't for a minute think that those recruits in the stands weren't impressed. Think Big Time. Kiffin is an inspired leader/motivator.
satguytn51#665905 writes:
You know, sometimes change is good. I thought it brought a "new" fresh look, a new attitude, and a new excitable spirit to the team. I'm glad we won, or otherwise some people would have said the black jerseys only brought the Vols bad luck.
Plus Hamilton doesn't need to act like an old stick in the mud, just because over 80% of the vans enjoyed the change. So Mike, get over it and get a life.
Sometimes a little fun makes things more interesting.
Bandit1066 writes:
For those worried about the helmets, just morph them into skulls for Halloween! Too cool for school! Kiffin may be the new Bill Veeck of sports where showmanship ranks up there with strategy and recruiting. Whatever it takes to make the game fun, cool, entertaining. Ultimately, it sells tickets and wins recruits who want to be part of something exciting and different. Otherwise, we'd all be Nebraska.
Bandit1066 writes:
Chill, Dude. It was a Kool change. Think what an impact it will have on recruiting. We are different, not the same old Andy Griffin "Big Orange" of 60 years ago!

BuckFama writes:
Thank God Kiffin let the Vols come out in the BEAUTIFUL black and orange jerseys ... they would have lost by at least 20 had they worn the same uniforms that have served them well for hundreds of victories and a couple of national championships in the past. It was especially good last night when the camera panned back and the Vols looked like the Commodores.
What will be really awesome is when Kiffin gets all of these Georgia recruits (remember he said he'd never lose to them) and they get together and request to wear red and black during the Georgia game. I mean, if the players ask for it, it oughta' happen, right?! Or the Vols in crimson the 3rd Saturday in October! Just hope the players ask for it.
Wearing the black jerseys, coupled with that boatload of "street cred" that lil' Wayne bestowed upon Kiffin the other day, ensures that UT will go undefeated the remainder of this year, and undefeated until the Vols return to the stodgy, sit-on-your-hands orange jerseys and R&R and C&W music.
Black jerseys and lil' Wayne ... they're the shizzle ma Vizzles.
AWOLVol writes:
I think they're fun on years when we have a night game at home that happens to fall on Halloween...but only under those circumstances!!!
I must say, however, that I think it was a risk to pull them out in such an important game. If we'd lost the game, those jerseys would have been blamed - just like the orange shoes and the powder-blue outline jersey games years ago. As it is, it all worked out so the jerseys are viable for future years...but like I say, I'd only be OK with them for home night games on Halloween.
Bottom line? I absolutely DO NOT want to become the Oregon of the SEC.
GO VOLS!!!

Dear Huey,
Maybe at 57 I am not quite the OF, yet!, but I totally, totally agree with you! The lack of names, like Penn State, was interesting. I likened them to the Notre Dame Green jerseys. Fun, new, and exciting, better than the all orange for a statement!

Do you think Snoop would be interested in UT's AD position?
