How about starting the offense practicing 2 hours before the game. They only play for a quarter anyway so it shouldn't be to taxing for them.

1. Starting spots are always open for competition so this shouldn't even be an option.
2. Everyone needs to cool it with the coaching problems- if the receivers don't drop a dozen balls last night, then we win the game with no problem. All we needed was a couple of FGs and Lincoln shanked an easy one. He hits that and the extra point and the TD at the end of the game would have won it. Our D can't be on the field for 25 min. a half.

This staff didn't have much to work with! All the freshman that are playing and beating out Fulmer's guys were brought in by Lane! He is not a miracle worker. The name is Lane, not Jesus. He has to play with the hand he was dealt, and it was a 2/7 off suit! We don't have much tallent right now because your boy, Fulmer left the cubbard bare!!!!!!

Not sure what to say without pissing a lot of people off; but Crompton is not a good QB. I would like to think the coaches know what they are doing, but the fact remains Lane Kiffin did not win in Oakland and the Vols are 2-3. So......??????????????????????????
mytrifecta writes:
The obvious problem is Crompton. The players have lost confidence in him and he has no confidence in himself. It's a disservice to Cromton to continue playing him. Kiffin is losing the respect of players, recruits and the fan base by his unwavering commitment to Crompton. Maybe Stephens isn't the answer but Crompton continues to prove he's not...we have to do someting to try and salvage this season.
Inquisitor writes:
Re: No. 1 - "Starting spots are always open for competition....." Except QB. That has been made abundantly clear, unfortunately.
Like Volnauburn says, "....everybody knows what we want"........a new look at QB. Crompton, and the way Kiffin has to coddle him, is killing any chance UT has to win against SEC competition. I don't see why this season must be sacrificed, but it looks like that's what's going to happen.
Give Stephens a shot in a real game, please. If Crompton's psyche is that fragile, that's even more proof that he's a liability.

what happens when the weather gets cold? i guess the staff will have to make the offense run laps around the stadium to keep them from getting stiff while the defense plays.

Georgia turns the ball over more than any other sec team..And remember that Monte's defense is designed to play against pro-style offenses..And that is exactly what georgia is. If we can get those turnovers and cash in versus a bad Georgia defense then we WILL win this game

a major difference between this staff and the last: attitude.
last year's would be talking about being a yard away from beating UCLA and two td's shy of beating two unbeaten teams, one of which is #1.
this year's is nowhere near that satisfied.
last year's staff was worried about keeping their jobs; this year's staff is working to do their jobs.

Finally someone with a intelligent comment.
I cannot believe some of the posts today about
our coaching staff. Stevens is not the answer and is probably worse. Like Coach Matthews said today, they call #17 Steven "pick 6" Stevens in practice. He does not know the playbook, horrible attitude, and his work ethic is so-so supposedly.
Let the coaches do what they want this year and next and then comment year number #3 when we go
8-4 with a BRUTAL schedule.

I always have felt routes are run better, more catches made etc. when the QB can handle his job efficiently. The very best option is to let a new QB start getting some experience!
thebankers#255067 writes:
I've seen a comment elsewhere that they get a sports psychologist for QB Crompton. I agree with that. As far as the 2-minute hurry-up offense, it seemed to work against Auburn. I heard Coach Kiffin say that it was because they practiced it a lot last week due to previous failures. I don't necessarily agree with that.
The purported facts are that Crompton has the job because he does well in practice. He didn't, however, do well in the games I watched last year and this. The problem can't be physical if he can execute in practice; so it must be mental, thus hiring a psycologist is a good suggestion.
I think QB Crompton panics. In practice the opposition players are UT students that he sees every week. They are not intimidating, larger-than-life figures. During a game, he gets on the field behind the center and looks around to find strange, huge, mean, unfriendly, ugly SEC defensive players waiting to devour him and his offense so he starts making bad decisions and throwing errant passes. With the hurry-up offense, Crompton doesn't have time to panic and does a lot better.
A sports psychologist may work, but it will take a while, maybe until December; a hurry-up offense can be executed this week.

Another post that is right on!
It's way past Crompton's individual game mistakes. Now it affects every aspect of our offensive game. Crompton's continued on-the-field problems affects the team's confidence in him and we cannot execute well enough to win under these circumstances.
We need a safe option at QB who is more of a game manager/leader - not a super athlete. Kiffin is spending all of his "political capital", so to speak, on his plan to stick with Crompton no matter what. He has to at least give something (or someone) else a try. I don't know if Stephens is the answer, but Crompton is not.
Maybe someone else on the team who we haven't even considered yet should be in the mix at QB. Didn't Teague play QB in high school? Did any of our other athletes play QB in high school? Let's try one of them at QB, at least in practice, to see how they might do. You never know what you might find.
I want to clarify something. I am a Lane Kiffin supporter and fan. I do believe that he and the staff will get this team turned around and Tennessee will be excellent again soon.
But in the meantime, let's win at least some of these close games. Try Stephens or someone else. What do we have to lose? I honestly believe that if Crompton were to improve, he still would not be able to help us win. There is just a confidence or leadership issue with him that will not go away. If we are destined to lose anyway, what can it hurt to try something different?
I know this post won't sway Kiffin on this issue. However, I do hope his coaching staff braintrust will at least counsel him to consider what continuing to stay with Crompton is doing to the rest of the team.

Don't dump on Fulmer. Brown, Richardson, and Jackson are making big contributions and Kiffin deserves the credit. But the majority of the rest including Montario Hughes were all Fulmer committments and in fact we lost some high profile recruits due to the change.
We are where we are because we decided the program was stagnant and opted to change coaches. This is the transition year hopefully we will improve week to week the rest of the season and make a bowl.
I like what Kiffin has done and the energy he has provided but to make Fulmer the scapegoat is unreasonable.
GoVols!

Our opponents know we want to run the football. I would like to see more play action passing on first down with an audible package that would allow us to check to a run if we don't see 8 or 9 in the box on first down.
I thought we had too many 2nd and 9 and 10's on Saturday. This puts a lot of pressure on Crompton on 2nd and 3rd downs.
And some more no huddle couldn't hurt either.

I think F: All of the above should have been added. First thing they should open up spots. Secondly they need to stay in the 2 minute drill for most of the game and pound the ball within the hurry up. I'm not big on the wildcat packages, but if they are working we should use them.

1-Snap the ball directly to a running-back.
2-Do not allow Cromp to attempt a pass-under ANY circumstance!
3-Quick-kick on third and twenty.
4-Do what makes sense and at least give Stephens a chance. This thing with Crompton has reached the point of being ridiculous.
If Stephens is THAT bad,why does he even dress-out for games? He should just call it quits.
If our receivers had arms on their backs,or they were ten feet tall, then they would have a better chance of catching Crompton`s passes.Thankfully, this is his last year at U.T.I don`t like being so negative about any Vol player, but it`s SO frustrating to see Crompton`s comedy of errors costing the Vols!

The funny thing is that everyone wants someone to blame other than the obvious for our problems. A lot of folks claiming the cupboard left bare are clueless. Tell Hardesty, Berry, GJones, GWilliams, Warren, DWilliams, McCoy, Vinson, Rogan, and another 20+ players the cupboard was left bare. Even better, man up and tell them to their face and see if you live to the next minute. We have players. We have one player who has all the physical abilities in the world but is suffering some level of synapses malfunction that prevents that physical ability of performing. That player needs to find another way to help this team including not being on the field. He's supposed to be smart so let him help Nick Stephens and Laimison (however you spell it) become better. Because one thing is certain - the QB play is not good enough to compete.
And the folks who think the comeback at both Florida and last Saturday are not a function of the defense resting because the lead was so great need a reality check. There is one answer and one answer only, the coach needs to take control of this team that he is on the verge of losing. Clearly, our receivers, and many of those considered to be great hands, have lost confidence in the ability of the QB to get them the ball. And if Kiffin loses this team, that highly ranked recruiting class that is not committed to sign commitments, will disappear as quickly as this season is dissappearing.

Wait, not so quick my friend!!!! Does the WR dropping passes have any bearing on our attitudes on Monday? Come on, their missing passes that are catchable, I know some were behind, but very catchable. They had chances to make JC look better and just "droped the ball" and I am beging to think there is something behind all of this......are these WRs on this team or not??????
I am starting to see CLK's point, mental mistakes are killing UT.
Good coaching can not fix bad recuiting....sorry, but CPF left the cupboards bear.
Go Vols!
GETinVOLved writes:
You took the words right out of my mouth!! I think Kiffin needs to realize that the lack of leadership and confidence from Crompton has a "trickle-down" effect on the rest of the team. I even think part of the receivers'mistakes on Saturday stemmed from a lack of confidence that Crompton can even get the ball to them: when he actually DID, they were caught off guard! A change at QB might just be the"shot in the arm" the team needs, right now. They just don't have any faith in the QB position...
GreerVol22 writes:
It amazes me the number of folks that think Kiffin should be a miracle worker and we should somehow be 4-1 at worst right now...We don't have the players to be successful. Qb is making 50% of this throws and WRs are dropping 50% of those...do the math.
Some creativity on the Nu gun was great to see, but running it regularly is pretty easy to defend. But we have got to start speeding things up and mixing things up...could it be any worse?
DooleyNoted writes:
Fulmer left the cupboard bare. Our talent leve is the lowest it has been since Johnny's first year. We had one player drafted last year and have two at best this year( Berry, Hardesty). This is going to be a 2-3 year project. UT's problems have nothing to do with coaching as mush as it does talent. No one is going to confuse Crompton with Carson Palmer.
DooleyNoted writes:
Funny how you don't mention any OL or DL players in your list, and it will be interesting to see how many of those listed will be on NFL rosters come next fall. There is no depth so guys have to play the whole game without a break. Offensive ineptitude means time of possession swings way in the other teams favor. We have two walk-on's on the OL and others that can barely walk. Hughes is a bright spot on the DL. If all our verbals sign we should look better in a couple of years.
Bright spot is that GA isn't much better, and coaching is worse than UT's. Go Vols!

eldr5#344719 writes:
No! Our current staff looks nothing like our old staff. This team is leading the SEC in fewest penalties committed. Fulmer's squad last year was one of the worst teams in the country in penalties committed. This team is disciplined but just lacking on talent. When you have one of the worst QB's in the nation starting for you and the receivers are mediocre to awful then you just won't win many games. The defense is good but you can't expect your guys to stay on the field 75% of the time and then expect them to not get gashed occasionally. We need to be running the ball at least 75% of the time and I hope Kiffin is finally ready to just give up on Crompton and pound the rock.
