Normally I don't post this time of year... not that I post a lot the rest of the year!... but I am a Titans fan. I can understand those folks who have been fans of other teams from those years BT (before Titans), but it just doesn't sit right to me that people become fans of a team simply because they draft someone I like. I will root for the player, but that still doesn't make me like the team.
I guess, for me at least, its like those people who suddenly become Alabama fans just because they win a game or 14. Got no use for 'em. If you weren't a fan before, then you aren't now.
Or remember how nobody rooted for the Braves, until they got good?
If someone became a Vol fan just because some kid that they really don't know anyway decided to sign with us, that would be sad.
I am a big believer in supporting your home teams. I get disgusted when I see someone born and raised here in Tennessee wearing Alabama/Florida/Notre Dame, etc hats and shirts. Shows a lack of pride in who you are and where you are from, combined with contempt for your neighbors. Its bad enough when I see someone in a Vandy hat, but at least that is a local team, sorta.
My dad has been a Colts fan since the '50s. So, when he roots for them to beat the Titans, I can accept that. He rooted for them pre-Peyton. I root for Peyton to play well, and I hope that he wins usually, unless he is playing the Titans.
I refuse to be that guy. The one who supports a team hundreds or thousands of miles away from me when I have a local team I can support.
I understand that a lot of people do, but it's not for me.
Go Titans!
Go Vols!

I had rather have someone go to a college game and come home and tell me about it, than to go to a pro football game, with all apologies to my son and other pro football fans. Pro football has unquestioned the better atheletes and more of them. But it is all the same. To this untrained eye, they all run similar offenses. I also think there is an unwritten rule that when a team gets two scores ahead, they have to let the other team score to tighten it up a bit.
The constant chest pounding of the announcers about how everything is so great in "The National Football League" just about causes me to hurl.
Seriously, a pro football game can't compare to a game in Knoxville or Gainesville or Tuscaloosa, and I've been to exhibition, regular season and playoff games all the way up to league championship games.
Having said that, I lie the Colts, because Peyton plays for them, but after they lose, I'm over it because "its just pro football." But that's just me.

I've been a Titans season ticket holder and a Vols season ticket holder. There is no comparison, D1 college football is a much better product! Go SEC! Go Vols!

I respect your opinion and agree with it to some extent. I have been a Chicago Bears fan since I was 12 years old. Not having a local pro team meant that I had to look elsewhere. Every time someone asks me my favorite team I cringe. I know that "why do you root for them when you have the Titans in TN?" is abut to come. I then have to explain that I am a loyal fan and just because someone moved their team to TN is not enough to get me to change sides. I do not dislike the Titans and will pull for them in most of their games. If I were a younger lad growing up in TN today then the Titans would be my favorite. Just for the record I have been a Vol fan ever since I could watch football. But I also grew up and still live in Knoxville.
GO VOLS!!!

I was a Cowboys fan until Jerry Jones bought them. When I lived in Chattanooga (and school in Knoxville), we were television territory of first, the George Preston Marshall-owned losing Redskins, and then, the expansion Atlanta Falcons. While in Memphis, we got either the losing St. Louis Cardinals or the New Orleans Aints, meaning that the Cowboys were the first winning team I got to see regularly. JJ ruined them for me! So, there are four-five teams that I viscerally just don't like. I pulled for the Houston Earlers during the Bum Phillips era, but Oilers East? So, the best way to root for the pros, in my opinion, is to stratify the quality of the Vols in the game. I'll pull for the Cowboys if Jason Witten is the most prominent Vol in the game, but I probably won't make a real effort to watch. In last February's Super Bowl, I'll admit that one main attraction, Peyton, ranked higher than the threesome of Meachem, Greer, and Mitchell, but I remembered the 'Aints of Archie, and that Tom Benson teased us with relocating to San Antonio after Katrina. I agree completely with your post. I was born and raised in Tennessee and have never waivered in my support for the Vols. I am a fan of former players in the NFL but I support the Titans first and foremost. I followed my wife to College Station after I got out of the USMC and eventually graduated from Texas A&M and I support them but that is because and I have a legitimate reason to support them. I will always be a Vol, I just part my loyalty with Texas A&M now.
I agree with your statement about people that are from Tennessee and wear jerseys and t-shirts from teams they have no real reason to support. You should have pride in where your from and have a "Real" reason to support another team, and not just "I like their colors" or for a certain player (that is what children do).
You should have pride in your state and your judgement.
Go Vols and Gig'em Aggies

I pull for Peyton as long as they're not playing Tennessee, but for me, that's about it.
