Where do think Florida will finish in the SEC East?

1st might be a bit of a stretch, but it is amazing how many fans are ready to throw the towel in already. It's obvious our defense will have to carry the load this year, but we have plenty of talent. Maybe Wilcox can work some magic with them. The big question will be can we score, and if so how many (I'm afraid not enough in some game). With a all new O-line and QB it's going to be tough. But lets not forget there is plenty of talent at all of these positions, and hopefully that talent will mature quickly. Every team in the East has plenty of holes to fill themselves. So as for me I'm not ready to throw the towel in on this season quit yet. Go Vols!

USC hasn't ever finish in sole possession of 3rd or better and I don't expect that to change. UF is unfortunately still the best in the division. UGA is ok and will have a better shot at 2nd than we will. Kentucky is still Kensucky and Vandy needs to cut football and add polo or backgammon. Thats Vandy only chance at winning something, unless its the MCAT's.

Agreed...I enjoyed last year when I wasn't expecting much, more than many previous years when every loss was agony...Last year we had some great hearts on the team (Wes Brown, Montario, the twins in the line, etc) who gave us thrills we wouldn't get if we were demanding all wins...I am expecting much the same this year, and I am looking forward to yelling for the players, not so much for wins...

DannyVol writes:

Don't count them out, folks. Remember 1985-86? That team wasn't supposed to be much but ended up beating the dog mess out of highly-touted Miami in the Sugar Bowl. If we can put together some semblance of an offensive line we will do much better than expected. The great thing about college football is that heart often trumps talent. Naysay all you want, but you can bank on this: Our defense is going to be great, Simms is a lot better and quicker than advertised, the days of our offense playing tight and predictable are over, and we will beat someone we aren't supposed to. The only potential problem is the o-line. That's a big problem to fix, but it's not impossible. Hopefully they have been eating everything in sight all summer and pumping iron.

Could be Spurrier's last hope! Go Gators...

BigOrangeFreak writes:

I'd like to think more Vol fans believed in this team (obviously we are rebuiliding) but don't buy into all the media darlings predicting a 6-6 or 5-7 season. Its been said all along that the true improvement of this team will show in their level of effort and the total product Coach Dooley puts on the field. I'm sure if you ask those players what they expect they'll tell you different.

I predict 8-4 or 9-3 with this team pulling off at least one and possibly two quality "upsets." (i.e., win the games the gloomy prognosticators are saying we should, and then beat a couple of the one's they say we can't--Oregon, FL, UGA, LSU, BAMA--Yeah, I can see two wins coming out of that crowd. My glasses do have a decidedly orange tint though.

Right on with your point. So many people including our UT fans are giving us no shot. I think we will finish 3rd in the East, but no worse than 4th. There is no way Kentucky will finish better than us. Also, the whole SEC is rebuilding. Even Alabama has its problems replacing 9 of 11 starters on Defense. We'll find out a lot about our team in the 2nd game against Oregon. GBO!

I believe they have never been bad or down position wise.. The only concern I had was DF play calling and OF play calling..I mean look at the QB, OL, etc.. they all looked like phooey 2 years ago and just one season after looking great..Yep coaching has a lot to do with wins and losses.. Kind of like PB coming in after a what 2-20 season and going to big dance.. Plus I don't care what any paper says..Heart is something that adds 80% to any kid..if papers are right then USC won the title 6 times..

EMBuckles writes:

Well, sadly, I think that this will likely be another "rebuilding year". The Vols will pound Vanderbilt. Hopefully they will knock off some others, however, while cheering for them, I am not gonna be looking for them to do very well this year. I'll be very pleased if they do, yet, even so, ain't anticipating a good season or a bowl game. Hope they will have a good season and a bowl game, ain't looking for it.

The 85 team was full of talent..If I recall that was the year we beat Bo Jackson and Auburn which meant a lot..We had a killer defense with McDaniel;Hobby;Delong;Darrin Miller.. Dale Jones with Kelly Ziegler was a lethal combination that unraveled UM and many others

Put down the kool-aid my fellow UT fans. Who in the world is predicting we go 8-4 or 9-3 this year? I attended UT and will always be a loyal fan, but some of you are just downright pathetic with your predictions. Have you seen our roster and our schedule? Do you follow college football??

This is the thinnest, youngest, most unproven team we have had in my lifetime. Yes, heart does count for something, but when there is such an obvious lack of proven talent in positions such as QB and OL, how do you not readjust expectations? We went 7-5 last year and lost more key players than anyone in the SEC! Get real people.

In conclusion, I will be elated if we go 6-6 this year and I will streak down Neyland Dr. in the middle of of the day if we go 7-5.

I agree with Balder..Our schedule is pretty brutal..at GA;at LSU;at USC; all 3 return a lot of starters and will be playing for their lifes!! An upset of FLA or Oregon isn't gonna happen unless they have a turnover meltdown..If there is an upset anywhere it maybe Bama at home;Their schemes aren't real complicated so a good game plan can make up for the talent ratio..They will pound the run; no secret there. All in all 6 wins are realistic..The Vols do have a mix of unproven talent on offense that could very well put up a lot of points if the QB's get it together..Stocker should have a monster season!!

Wow!! No better than .500 over the next two seasons? Really? I can see being "realistically pessimistic" this season, but you think we can't improve on that? Just take a look at next year's schedule in comparison with this year's (which is horribly, front-end loaded.

I'm counting Arkansas as a W due to Mallet leaving. The others are realistic assumptions. What'cha think?

Yes, I absolutely would call UGA and LSU at home (next season) a coin toss. Are you so sold on Georgia that you would NOT think we are at least 50/50 in that game? And as for LSU, they have not exactly been setting the woods on fire with Miles at the helm.

And how the hell are you already counting a bowl loss for next year? Next year is very realistically, an 8-4 or 9-3 looking season, and I would take the Vols (and most SEC teams) in any bowl game.

Who cares about football? Coach Pearl and Coach Summitt can provide us with our sports "fix" for at last the next three seasons. Tennessee can finish second if the defense holds teams to under 20 points the first 6 games. Oregon and Florida could be the only two losses if that happens in them first 6 games. Big wins over Georgia and LSU could propel them to a 4-2 start? If we could have played Oregon later in the season I thind it would have been better for our chances, in my opinion. If we can find a way to win that game though, a 5-1 start possibility. GO VOLS!

Seeing since I picked them 3rd however, I do not expect our defense to be strong enough to hold LSU especially to under 20 points. So a 3-3 or 4-2 start is what I expect. I think the offense will be showing marked improvement by game 7. Not enough probably for beating BAMA or OLE MISS, but all the others, yes even VANDY and KENTUCKY we should handle. So 7-5 or 8-4 will be our record? Outback Bowl or Sugar Bowl here we come! GO VOLS!

Wait guys, Dooley is apparently a nice man, with good character and all. Now, we expect him to recruit players just like him! We know nothing about our new coach except he is a nice man...but is that enough? So far his record as coach is a losing one. Will he be able to go into the homes 300 pound monsters (the type it takes to win) many of them never living in a structured home with a father present. Could he connect with them after a lifetime of privelage in the home of a millionaire, (His father, Vince) we don't know the answers at this moment. If you are looking character, first, you might root for Carson-Newman, Tn., Tech etc. These kids he must recruit to win, life has not been so kind to most of them...its not their fault, if they are recruited to a big time school their environment will take 360 degree turn...many can make the change...but a few cannot. Most Vol fans understand their situation and we will be there to root for you through thick and thin.

They went into the season unranked and entered the polls in week 3 after a tie with #10 UCLA and beating #1 Auburn. They were indeed a surprise team. Don't question my knowledge of UT football, kiddo.

Once again, yes they had talent but they were unranked going into the season. The talent level surprised a lot of folks that year, which was my whole freaking point.

DannyVol writes:

One more thing, genius. If that team was so utterly loaded with talent, then why were only two upperclassmen off that team drafted in the first two rounds of the NFL draft in '86 and '87?

My whole point was about how that 1985 team was the ultimate TEAM and how that is precisely what we have to become this year to have success. I know because I was there every home game and I remember how everyone was so inspired by how all these superstar-laden teams like Auburn and later Miami were getting bulldozed by a bunch of no-name Volunteers.

You can look at records and stats and results in a book all you want, but to have true perspective you either have to experience it first-hand or have a bit of smarts.
