We have one of the best fields in the country right now. Why would we go back to synthetic? Just so some other games could be hosted there? Forget it.

I've seen us play in games where the rain was coming down in sheets during the first quarter or two. Then after halftime, you could hardly tell it had rained at all. Awesome field, awesome drainage system. Leave it be, Mr. Dooley.

We just spent million+ to remove the tartan turf that was the original artificial turf on a college stadium field. We know about the injuries on artificial surfaces, thus we returned to the real thing in a first class way. He is talking to "knee"/joint doctors and wants to promote an artificial surface which has been shown to cause more injuries.
What the hey is Dooley talking about?
Keep the real grass. We have one of the best grass fields in the nation. What is the urgency for a replacement in his mind? Is there any valid reason?
If there IS a valid reason, the KNS article did not enumerate it. I am sure the knee docs liked the idea though...more business?!

I have two words for anyone stupid enough to want another "turf" field.

Over the years, I have read and heard about so many injuries and abrasions caused by playing on artificial turf. Like an old, humorous song said, "keep on doin' them NATURAL THINGS, dat's what make de birdies sing!" Seriously, gimme carpet on the floor inside but real grass and gound outside!

bubbanator21 writes:

I'm against the artificial turf, but Field Turf is not the same as the old astro turf. It's more like synthetic grass, players wear regular cleats and are not subject to the knee injuries that astro turf caused.

I can't watch an Ole Miss game cause of the sheen from the turf. Just looks weird. Please don't do it in Knoxville.

TurfDoc writes:

It is true that Field Turf is not like astro turf with as many injuries. However, it will be hotter than ambient air temperatures (150 F on a summer day), conduct static electricity, and smells like rubber (crumb rubber is used for topdressing). There is also a high potential for staph and other infections. Field turf needs to be groomed, topdressed, and sprayed with disinfectants and fabric softeners. Nothing beats a natural field!

Yep, I'm with you! One of the most robust, sturdy field turfs and drainage systems in all of football; college or pro. Leave it the heck alone. It's a beautiful turf - looked better with the hedges too.

Keep The Grass

I like yourself prefer the natural grass, however I remember my Senior year (fall 2004 I think) at Austin Peay they installed a Poly-Tan turf and its some good stuff. The Polytan turn is actually suppose to prevent less injuries than grass. Keeping the field with natural grass would be nice, I just think CDD wants the best for his players and other college football players that play in Neyland Stadium. GBO!

FLAVOLS writes:

I prefer grass but if it can become a recruiting advantage - Do It! The new field turf is MUCH better than anything in the past - LESS injuries. Many NFL teams have it.

An independent, three-year study of competitive college football showed that when compared to natural grass the FieldTurf system leads to:

- 74% Fewer Muscle Tears
- 42% Lower ACL Trauma
- 32% Fewer Ligament Tears
- 22% Fewer Severe Injuries
- 19% Fewer Substantial Injuries
- 12% Fewer Concussions
- 10% Less Injury From Shoe Surface Interaction during Contact
- 8% Less Injury From Shoe Surface Interaction during Non-Contact
- 7% Fewer Total Injuries

please for heaven sakes dont pull up the natural grass it is one of the greatest looking fields in the country!! stop messing with a good thing dooley and just worry about getting the vols back on top and leave the turf managment to the grass man, thanks!!

The original turf and everyone that went down at UT put food on the table I ate at and the roof over my head every time my dad seamed one of them. He seamed Stokely and Tom Black too, but I prefer grass. UT has one of the best fields and I like seeing grass and mud on the uniforms. My vote is no to turf of any kind and yes to real grass.

Wow! I had never thought about all that. But it would not naturally clean itself like real grass. Good points.

Yes - it's true that there is no evidence Field Turf leads to injuries. It's also true that under many scenarios Field Turf is safer.

However, those numbers appear in Wikipedia and appear to be misquoted from the article and/or misleading.

The article specifically mentions that "..There are no significant differences in head, knee, or shoulder trauma between the two surfaces..."

The quote on muscle tears is misleading because it is a very rare event on both surfaces and doesn't account for the variation -- e.g., the stastically valid difference between the two surfaces is 0.2%. That sounds a lot different than 74% fewer.

The article indicates the type of injuries are different on each surface.

Those who are in favor of this don't remember all of the knee injuries that use to occur on that phooey. I think it is a recruiting tool to be playing on natural grass. I know it is much better for the players health.

Even if we DID go to synthetic, let's not do somethiing stupid like Boise St. I love orange, but not orange turf.
