Why would an additional penalty change anyone's opinion on Pearl? We already knew what he did.
The new penalty does not change my view of Pearl at all. It simply confirms my belief that Slive is a corrupt, hypocritical cheater.
(This belief is based on conspiracy theories that have been making the rounds over the last few years solely in my own brain. So take it with a grain of salt. Probably still true, though.)

UT represents the SEC when playing games in all sports or in anything it does concerning rules etc. What the Sec has done here is not only crucifying the UT coach but the AD and the entire University network. It is saying that Hamilton was too light with the penalties he imposed on B.P. and , in their judgement , Hamilton didn't have enough thought into what he was supposed to do. In other words Hamilton did not know how to respond. So , Slive wanted everyone to know he ruled. The SEC needs to have faith in its members. With that said, as a donar to both sects, I will continue to support B.P.and the University but will no longer support the SEC and its antics. Everyone of us has misled someone at times. The NCAA is not God, although it wants to be. These simpleton rules they arrive at are pathetic at best. B.P. cost himself 1.5 million. Dumb mistake but done. The SEC has just destroyed UT's recruiting for years to come. Not with this staff only but, with future staff hires. Hamilton has been undermined and is no longer effective. I would say to leave the SEC and start rebuilding. As I said, I will support B.P. but as fo the SEC my money stays here. I may root for my University but when they may be out of any contention for championships my interest will go to another Conference. And so will my money. I ask the my fellow donars to the SEC funds boycott the Conference and hurt them as they destroyed UT's future in athletics.

He broke a rule, he didn't cheat. There's a difference. He's a phenomenal coach who graduates players and does a lot for the community. We will get through this and be better in the long run. Everyone can settle down, because Tennessee basketball will continue to dominate as long as Pearl is our coach.

He has asked us to forgive him.
SO FORGIVE HIM! The bible says we've all sinned and came short of the glory of God. I really think he has learned his lesson. btw... Would'nt you want to be forgiven and given another chance?
I thought so.
VolPatrick writes:
Um, one of the dictionary definitions of cheating (verb) is breaking a rule. A cheater (noun) is someone who acts dishonestly, deceives, or defrauds. Explain to me again how Bruce Pearl didn't cheat?
You can call me a troll if you'd like, but if you review my previous posts you'll find me to be a very vocal supporter of the program and the university. However, I simply cannot tolerate Bruce Pearl's actions. He famously turned in another basketball program for having violated recruiting statues, and was held in high regard by many, including me, for his willingness to follow the rules. Until he violated the rules. And then he lied about it!
Now, his program is going to suffer severely for his lack of willingness to follow the rules and his inability to take responsibility for his wrong-doings. It makes me sick to have to say all this, because he is clearly an excellent basketball coach. But there must be consequences for breaking the rules.

Your statement is ..Slive is a corrupt, hypocritical cheater. ?????
It was Bruce that turned in a fellow coach for cheating then cheated himself, oh yea... and when asked by The NCAA......HE LIED. He wasn't even smart enough to realize the NCAA would'nt have asked the question.. if they did'nt already know the answer.
You got dupped by Kiffen; after Al Davis told you what to expect, and now your supporting a habitual cheater and convicted liar. Good Luck with that.
dcap8424 writes:
Thanks for quoting Webster. He didn't cheat in the sense that our team gained some sort of advantage by his actions. Most of the recruits he contacted didn't even end up here.
I don't think anyone is arguing that he didn't lie, but lying and cheating are two different things. If you need a dictionary to tell you that, I'm surprised you're capable of posting a comment on a website.
You're not being a supporter of the University by saying you can't tolerate Bruce. The University (Athletic Director and Chancellor) fully supports Bruce, so if you support the University which you claim, you would support Bruce also. Since you don't support Bruce, this also means you don't support the University so kindly exit the website. Don't bother coming back. We don't want you here.

Retarded secondary violations. He had kids over for a BBQ. Big freakin' deal. He didn't cheat their test scores like Cal. Let's move on. Go Pearl, Go Vols!!
lastlap writes:
First off he lied. Dead wrong, but so have any of you and myself. If you say you haven't then you're a liar. The rules he broke were rules no if ands or buts. With that said there is different penalties in life. He didn't know that a kid has his grades changed to be eligible (see Kentucky). He didn't recruit a professional player to play college sports (see Kentucky) although he is finally not allowed to play until the appeal goes through. Wonder how that will go (see Kentucky $$$$). Then you got all this pay for play deal going on at Auburn. I think the NCAA and SEC have bigger fish to fry. Instead of taking care of a few phone calls, pork sandwich, and a lie. All of which are wrong no doubt but who should suffer the most here. We already know because Bruce go thrown under the bus again today. I'll support him from now on until he does something that really deserves punishment of this magnitude. For all the other penalities that WILL go unpunished see Kentucky or any other program that does no wrong.
GOPROKID writes:
Do you still support Bruce Pearl ???
Ask me after the NCAA puts UT on probation.
Slive would'nt be out done by UT's punishment.
The NCAA won't be out done by Slive's punishment.
It's will get worse before it gets better.
(Remember when your parents found out you got in trouble at school or at a relatives house?)
They don't have a choice but to set an example.

This is close to piling on. Pearl has three levels of authority on his back each trying to out do the others. It is the slowest process one can imagine - it never seems to be over. The SEC and NCAA had better get together and align themselves on the same page or institutions will decide to dump both of them and form something brand new. Pearl has been punished enough but now the SEC seems focused on doing some permanent damage to UT. It is truly shameful and we need to support our coach to the max.

First of all beetle,I doubt the SEC will miss anything you may have donated in the past or in the future.
Second, you need to realize ,Bruce Pearl destroyed the University Of Tennessee if they are indeed destroyed.I don't believe this will hurt Tennessee nearly as much as you and others think.
It was not that Pearl broke the rules, but he did so knowingly and asked recruits, parents, and coaches to keep quiet. After he was caught in the lie,he denied knowing the person in the picture that was shown to him,as well as saying he didn't recognize the house in the picture. It was his house and the picture of an assist. coach's wife. How can someone not recognize his own home and a picture of an employee's wife?
The violations in itself merited nothing but a slap on the wrist and he should have owned up to it.His lies are something else.Lies are the reason he is going to recieve whatever punishment he gets and that punishment will be warrented.I am still for this guy being our coach, but with very strict probation. He will not lose his job as some seem to think and wish.He will, and is paying a very steep penalty for his lies.He deserves to be punished but does not deserve to be dismissed.

So, 18% believe Coach Pearl does not deserve our support. Let's look at a few other things that at least 18% of people believe:
1. The moon landing was a hoax.
2. The sun revolves around the earth.
3. Ghosts are real.
4. Humans and dinosaurs lived at the same time.
5. Environmentalists intentionally cause the BP oil spill.
Just goes to show that 20% of the country are idiots.

I have said it before and I will say it again. I AM A HYPOCRITE!! Short of killing someone or actually paying players to come to UT, I want him to be our BB coach until he retires after many years at the helm. I have seen enough bad BB played at TBA to know what the alternative will be if he is fired. I say bite the bullet, take the shots from the media and hunker down. CBP will find out soon enough that people love those who take advantage of their 2nd chances and he will be a media darling again before too long.
