Raleigh, Dooley, Cuonzo. Is Hamilton positioning UT to move to the SunBelt Conference?

And here is some trivia for you.....Which SEC school has the only basketball coach to never take a team to the NCAA tournament? Sad.

Let's really invite him into to UT. Let's encourage the players and signees to honor their committment to UT.......I heard the same negative comments about Dooley. SUPPORT UT ATHLETICS!!! GIVE HIM and the players a chance. Like Mcrae said earlier, "when is this ever going to be about the players and team again"?

Maybe one of those of you who voted "Yes" can inform us as to who the heck this guy is and why you think he is ready for the SEC. Just asking. I'd appreciate it.

This is a hugh gamble. There are a lot of proven coaches and assistants at the major college level that would have accepted the challenge to rebuild the Vols into a contender. I hope it works out for UT but again, a gamble. I think it is all the more reason Mike has to go.

A lot riding on this one. 16-12 would not be a good way to start off. Got to get to the tourney next year! Best of luck coach.

East Saint Louis & Purdue & Missouri Valley are a good pedigree.

Gene Keady trained Bruce Weber (SIU & Illinois) and Mark Painter (SIU & Purdue). It's Josh Bone family tree of defense, and getting the best of the the talent you have.

Springfield Misouri is a suburb of Branson like Knoxville, might be a surburb of Gatlinburg. Developing a decent team there requires recruiting Saint Louis & Kansas City, like recruiting Georgia & Memphis to get talent to Knoxville.

I'd have hoped for Shaka Smart, but Counzo Martin had a Mizzou offer coming, and UT waiting might have been risky.

I just checked back on articles of coaches we were interested in. Cuonzo was on none of them. None of the projections from the writers either. What the heck happened did they all turn us down.

Just because he doesn't have a big resume' doesn't mean he can't coach! It's not my choice, but it's possible he could do quite well! Let's at LEAST see what he has to offer! GBO!

TNPilgrim writes:

It must have been obvious in a short amount of time that no quality coaches were interested in TN. So Hamilton and Cheek take the one that's easy and cheap, and once again UT basketball is a 3d rate sport along with baseball and swimming. UT sports has taken a nose dive since Mike Hamilton became athletic director.

I'm a VOL sports fan for 70 years and now live in Southwest Missouri just 1 hour south of Missouri State and I am disappointed that Coach Martin is leaving MSU but thrilled for the VOLS. I was afraid that Univ. Missouri was going to get him since Coach Anderson went back to Arkansas. UT has done excellent in getting Coach Martin as he is very, very experience as a player, assistant coach and head coach. A person with good common sense, relates to the players, and wants them to get their education. I know two players that I wish he would bring with him to UT. Give Coach Martin a chance and he will produce.

You know, when Hamilton announced Derek Dooley was our new football coach, I hadn't heard of him either. Of course, I knew who his daddy was. But I gave him a chance, listened to what he had to say, I now I'm firmly on his side.

I'm going to reserve judgement until I learn more about this guy. Hopefully, he will be the same kind of high character, highly motivated guy that Dooley seems to be.

Has Mike Hamilton lost his mind. TN. is a top 20 basketball program and he hired a coach with less than a 60% winning record as Pearl's replacement. I think Hamilton needs to be fired his timeing of Pearl's job being in jeapordy before the men opened their tournment and than his fireing 1 day before the Lady Vol's started the tournmant. It seems to me any thing he can do to upset UT has become his main job. We will win less than 50% of our games and go back to 1 or 2 games a yr. on national TV and 3000 or 4000 attendence at a Vol's basketball game, what a terriable shame. Hamilton NEEDS TO GO to ALA. for a job.

Everybody needs to stop bashing this guy...look at his resume
He made Missouri State a 20 win program.
He is from the Keady coaching tree.
Looks to be a class act.
oh and he knows a little something about X's and O's, something Pearl struggled with.

Like this hire a lot. Let's not be bitter about Pearl and welcome him to UT

easleychuck writes:

The poll asked a question. I would have preferred another coach.

Only, time will tell, we are about 1 for 5 (20%) in the last 5 UT coaches, (after DeVoe). And yes, until Pearl lied himself out of a job, that is the success. Jerry Green just had talent and he insulted the entire fanbase, so he does not count as a success.

So with this average, don't expect success but I do hope for it.

DERELICK_MY_VOLS writes:

Cuonzo (not to be confused with Kwanzaa) will be fine here....he was on 3 different NBA rosters (Hawks, Van. Grizzlies, and the Bucks) so he knows what type of intensity to bring to practices and the court...played for and was an assistant under Gene Keady of Purdue...was probably going to be the HC of Missouri if Painter stayed at Purdue or be the man at Purdue if Painter bounced.

The one thing he WILL bring is a Tenacious D like the early years under Pearl. The man is also a firecracker like Pearl. Patience is a virtue....give the homeboy a chance first.

Nathan Scheer (Fr)

By "Coach Cal," are you referring to John Calipari? I think he's taken teams to the NCAA in six of the last seven years, and this year he became the second coach to take three separate schools to the Final Four. As far as disqualifying him from tournament consideration by "being stripped," I haven't heard any talk of taking away UKy's tournament victories this year or last. Regardless, the guy can coach college basketball, no doubt. (Pro basketball coaching? Well that's an entirely different matter.)

I say let's give Cuonzo Martin a few years to see what he can make of the considerable resources at his disposal at UT, and if he can recruit the best of the considerable talent available in west Tennessee, then he should do well. UT's success the past six years wasn't entirely due to CBP.

TN is a top 20 basketball program? What planet did you come from? Just because they reach a no. 2 ranking for a couple of weeks one year does not make UT a top 20 program. In fact, I would argue Tennessee did not even warrant an invitation to the NCAA tournament this season. Given that they lost 14 of their last 26 games and lost by 30 to a young and inexperienced Michigan team, that would justify my opinion. Also, to take matters further, the SEC is not the great basketball conference everyone around here seems to think it is. Look at the history of teams that have won the NCAA tournament. Other then Kentucky (many times), Arkansas (once) and Florida (twice) are the only schools in the SEC to ever win the NCAA tournament. You could say the SEC is Kentucky(1) and Florida(1a) and everyone else has been irrelevant to the rest of the college basketball world. Tennessee fans have a few 20+ win seasons and all of a sudden, they know what good college basketball is all about. WRONG!!!

TJ, you have great posts.

BTW, I live in MO now and have been watching him turn around Missouri State. He is going to surprise UT in a great way! Be encouraged.

I didn't agree with firing BP. Should've let the man take his lumps and keep the coach that built the program and would be better for it in the long run. Hammy fired Bruce for one reason and one reason only...to try and save his own @$$! Now he can point and say "Kiffin left town and I fired the other problem child." Hamilton's tenure has been a disaster for the entire department save the Women's titles.

Give the guy a chance! I think it is unrealistic for us to make the tourney next year whoever we hired. Williams, Goins, Fields, and most likely Hopson and Harris are gone. Think about what's left. I just hope our two commits are more impressed than the folks on this board, and that they don't read it!

a lot longer than giving you any credibility to your posts. Dooley is a great coach and has proven in his short time to be so. In two years UT will compete for SEC crown and maybe higher.

I agree w/ volpreacher. Recruiting class rankings are no predictor of future success. Our '08 class was 3rd in the NATION, not the SEC. Look how well that turned out! Dooley is a class act, and I think he will win. If Martin is anywhere near as good as him, we did GREAT!

vols2#227315 writes:
