Ya'll are nuts. He's a solid coach with a winning percentage 800% better than Stooley's. With the state of our program right now, you might call it a "2nd tier coach" but that's a heck of land for a 5th tier program. Our schedule next year posts a min of 6 losses. Takes a lot of moxy to walk into that. CO & Purdue wanted him. It's a great hire and I don't think it's 2nd rate at all. Everyone's been asking who else do you want? TN gets a proven HC that can at least win twice what he loses and keeps a mid-major schoold competitive nationally. You're kidding yourselves if expected anything more, but this is not a 2nd rate hire. Good man and coach. Welcome to TN!

If you read this, dont' worry that the majority of TN fans voted no. They also all voted Kifftard & Stooley and most want Fulmer back. YOu're the right man for TN right now.

Go Vols! (well, in 2014).

I believe after all the issues for the past 5 years that UT Fans are not confident about any coach unless it was Gruden or Saban. I understand why, UT has fallen to the lowest depths of UT Football history and the shock that everyone feels, is how did this happen so quickly? We can point our fingers at Fulmer, Hamilton, Kiffen, Dooly and Hart, however, the reality is..........this is what it is. How do we climb out of this hole? Butch Jones is our coach, we should support him 100% and stop acting like a bunch of spoiled kids. It is my opinion, the fan base has been extremely brutal to coaches and players. We harbor some of the blame as well. Lets bring in CBJ and get our mojo back!

I hate to call people stupid but when you make these comments it shows me you know nothing about what your speaking.

Dooley was a position coach never a head coach until LA TECH. He has a losing record there in the time he was there and he got offered the UT job which honestly should have never happened.

This guy has paid his dues as a position coach, then coordinator, then 6 yrs as head coach, Winning at each stop and going to bowl games.

Butch Jones is over qualified when compared to Charlie Strong.

So at least make an argument with facts, not your blow hard opinion.

As Bear Bryant said about coaching. You coach according to the players you have, then you recruit accord to the offense or defense you want to run. I would think he will use the players we have and use them according to their ability to play.

Very good comment. 2 points to reiterate:

1. Winners win...this guy is a winner. Winning is contagious and so is losing. So much of sports is mindset. Hiring winners is always better than mediocrity.

2. The fact that he turned down jobs in hopes for the TN speaks HUGE! We now have a coach that knows how win and WANTS to be at TN!! This is a destination job for him.

The losers on this site that can't see the upside need to just move on. TN will never be good enough for them unless we are playing in NC game every year.

I'll be interested to see how he recruits, how the Juniors react to this hiring and how gets immediately involved in high schools in TN. It will also be very interesting to see how he assembles his coaching staff. We have some great talent that wants to come to TN but just like coaches...when there are better opportunities you have to look elsewhere.

Next year's schedule is tough...but expect an upset or 2.

Go Vols!

A troll being a decision maker in a job requiring analysis and the ability to discern long term results realizes the dichotomy between Hart's insistence on UT playing Alabama and this hire.

AlpharettaVol, agree with your post. Don't you live in the same town as Eric Berry and his brothers, if so what is the latest on these two brothers? Would love to see them come to UT. It might interest you and others that Jalen Reeves Maybin is another Patterson, but only better. He plays the entire game offense as quarterback and corner back on defense. He has committed and has stated UT is still his school. He is the same size as Patterson. Saw him go against Jalen Hurd of Beech High. They both are better than Patterson. Jalen Hurd''s family is all UT, but he is waiting for the right coach at UT. He is just a junior, but could graduate this yr. as a 17 yr. old. Wants to study chemistry and engineering in college.

Both of these guys are 6ft. 3in. and can fly. Both are very difficult to tackle. Both know proper pass routes and their plays.

Agreed! I think it's time that we face reality. We're not the level of team in the SEC (or nationally) that we used to be (duhhh). Hiring Gruden was a fantasy that many wanted to think was a real possibility. Strong is really not anymore "proven" than Butch Jones and Strong was only using UT as a negotiating tool with UL. Gundy...there was no way he was leaving OSU to come to UT...BTW, he's got absolutely no recruiting connections in the Southeast either. I think that Dave Hart inherited a very difficult situation and is handling it in the best way possible. You have to remember, Hamilton used a hiring firm to acquire Kiffin and Dooley. Neither of them were "first choices" for coaches at UT but it wasn't as publicized as these recent rejections. I've actually read that both of previous coaches were 5th or lower on the prospect list.
The traditions at UT are strong and although winning games is something that we've been used to, there are other traditions that are just as important! These will live on whether we ever win another game. Winning is important as well and I believe that this is a step in the right direction...he's done it in the Big East!
Let's go Coach Jones!!

He has a rare opportunity to meld a recruiting strategy that will get Ohio/Michigan recruits for strength and durability as well as Georgia/Fla recruits for speed and quickness. It is not like Hart did any better finding a replacement unfortunately utk is the laughing stock of college football and did not have to be this way, i guess we will wait and see how we fair in those first three big games next year away at Oregon Florida & Alabama
