While I don't like the rankings we have in the various tracking services, when you look at the weighted avg. of the stars, we are in the top 20. While this must improve, this year isn't going to be the easiest considering the circumstances. I believe Butch is a good representative of the school and can sell, so I am hoping we salvage a decent class this year and know that next we will be positioned to do much better.

On several recruits we are finishing second or third. Unfortunately there is no reward for not getting the recruits. Also it appears that the past staff over looked some good recruits and them made sure that they destroyed any bridges between them.

I agree.Butch has done the best that he could in the short time he had working on this class. Next year we should see our recruiting going where we need to be.I am impressed with his energy and excitement.

Well stated..Jones appears to be doing a very good job in dealing with difficult circumstances..and this class could end up much better than could reasonably be expected..

This staff has worked their tails off. They came in behind the eight ball. Almost every kid they have offered had longtime relationships with other schools and coaches. Some of the people that post their cute, snippy comments are real fans now aren't they?
A fair judgment of this staff as recruiters can't be made until signing day 2014. Until then it would be nice if some of you jerks would back off and give these men a fair chance.

IF Jon Gruden had wanted to be at Tennessee we would have hired him, Charlie Strong too and any other "big name" prospective head coaches. It was obvious when Coach Dooley was let go, a for sure hire was nowhere near being in place. So Butch Jones and Co. have their work cut out. No matter how "marvelous" this class or the next or his last class at UT some day is, they still have to be coached. I am as interested in that as in all the stars behind the players' names. One of the saddest parts of this information age is all the junk we post even when we do not know the entire story. As wagee12 posted, give the coaches "a fair chance." We were already 2nd or 3rd on many of the big name recruits. It has nothing to do with Coach Jones. I feel excited if for no other reason than not hearing all the Nega-Vol stuff if we were under the former coaching administration. But then...the Negativity must just come naturally to some who come on here. I am excited but do not have championship aspirations for this fall.

The same 8 ball that coach DOOLEY came in under and he had three straight top twenty classes. There is no fair chance for any coach at UT and never will be. I hate it but it is the facts, coach JONES will get his buy-out in three years and on and on till the big money boys at UT decide to put the money on the big name and the recruits will come. I still don't understand the 6 year 3 million dollar deal on this hire when a 6 million 3 year could have landed anybody in the nation. Oh well GOOD LUCK COACH JONES.

Ah can you send me your copy of all of the coaching firings and hirings that are to take place in the next five years? I seem to have misplaced mine. Also, I'm running low on cash, so if you could release to me the next winning numbers for the lotto, or perhaps any sporting upsets that are to take place in the little bit, that would be great. How about you just let the man do his job, and hold off on your negativity unless the current staff gives you a reason to be negative. Why bash the man before he gets a chance to prove his worth. Now is not a time for Vols fans to bash every decision our coaches make before they see the field. Now is a time for the Vol nation to support our team and coaches. Go Butch, and Go Big Orange!!!

If people answered the poll honestly, there is no way UT fans arent disappointed right now. Sure, maybe on signing day, there will be some surprises, but right now this class doesnt seem to be that great.

Gruden was never in the picture. Maybe on the Tenn. Vol fantasy team. This coaching staff needs to be able to close. Sure they can recruit and get kids on campus but they have to be able to close the deal With that said if we are going to coninue to improve the talent then they need to be in the top 15. Kiffin and Dooley finished there... Sure that doesn't make up for a lack of coaching or comittment but you need ballers and it all starts with closing on the top rated players.

I guess the only thing I've got is you never know what's going to happen on signing day. We're in rebuilding mode. I am optimistic that we're going to see a better team emerge the next few years.

Orangeman 1 last time I checked Butch Jones was hired 4 or 5 days before the December dead period in which him and the coaches could not visit recruits till early Jan. so where is the three months that he has had to recruit? Just asking how you expect him to come in behind Dooley who made it a point to not visit during the season and make up all that ground with the 5 star recruits along with the fact that Kiffin had half a class recruited by fulmer and dooley inherited kiffins recruits who mostly were higher rated than what dooley recruited. So how about we give the coaches at least through the florida or alabama game before we start bashing them to badly.

I question how well this staff is going to be able to recruit. Historically new coaching staffs have one of their best years the first year at a school while the excitement of a new coach is still in the air. I thought Jones & Co would have us in the top 15-20, at least, but it isn't shaping up that way. I guess it's more of the same in the recruiting department until we start winning more games than we lose.

Less be totally honest for a minute. This coach is trying. But what bothers me is Auburn hires assistant rodney garner all you guys remember how good of recruiter he is. Arkansas hires randy shannon same story. Now tell me why we could not hire some one on this level. I have a feeling it is the same reason we did not get our first choice of head coaches.
Now I love butch jones I think he is a tireless recruiter but if you think Auburn and Arkansas do not have a head start on us because of the assistants they hired you are lying to yourself. I am slowly coming to the conclusion My vols have internal problems higher than even the AD. Go vols

A good start would have been hire a bang up recruiter as an assistant. Like auburn with rodney garner and Arkansas with randy shannon. Auburn lost more games than us go head to head with alabubba and Georgia but will still finish higher in recruiting than us.

I would like to remind everyone that a recruiting class like this during the 90's with Fulmer would have been considered a disaster. I've been a Tennessee supporter since the 1950's and I've seen worse and better. The fact, regardless, is that success on the field is directly related to success in recruiting. I don't care how good of a coach someone is, unless you have Notre Dame's Schedule maker, your not going to win big in the SEC without winning in recruiting.

When you use terms like "weighted avg. of the stars," to get a class into the top 20; you are really reaching. How about square root of 40-yard-dash times? Or frequency distribution of twitter tweets, by day of the week?

You do not remember or just do not realize what a Top Class is like. That is # 1, Tops; not Top 10, or conning yourself about a # 40 class.

Phillip Fulmer had multiple # 1’s, & a bunch of Top 10's. Fans were disappointed if not Top 5's. Top 15's were barely acceptable. 5 SEC schools were ahead if Top 10. That was before Hamilton, Hart, Cheek & Presidents-of-the-Week taught the Vol Nation how to be losers.

Without at least one Class as Top 5 in a 4-year-period, UT won’t have a chance in Tuscaloosa of winning a division, much less SEC championship---if UT has Top 5 level coaching.

Without major schedule upgrades, & winning vs. better teams, UT will be off TV weekly, for a majority of the Vol Nation. Maybe you have forgotten UT on CBS/ESPN/ABC EVERY week; or the year when the #1 DE Recruit waited until signing day to commit to UT; there was no room, so he went to Clemson.
(We had the #1 class anyway.)

He languished@Clemson; everybody he played double & triple-teamed him. No other heavy hitters could take pressure off him. He did not have coaching at UT level; so he fell to the side.)

Jones smiles a lot, looks okay in an orange tie, & has lots of energy; but says dumb stuff that sounds like outright lies: 1) "best coaching staff in the USA" -but brings in his people from Cincinnati. 2) "can win the SEC using only athletes from TN." (Phillip Fulmer publicly corrects that saying UT must recruit nationally just to compete in the SEC.) 3) "I've always wanted to be at UT," when he grew up in way-back-in-the-sticks MICH., w/no Tennessee ties or connections.

Frankly, with his staff, if my kid were an elite athlete, I could not okay sending that kid to UT. They simply have not been big time enough to give them my potential Pro player’s future.

Fulmer's record of NFL players, Spurrier's, Les Miles’, Richt’s and Saban's are worlds better.
UT's class is what’s expected from a group of C-list coaches. Jay Graham has the only recruit, who is potentially TOP SEC caliber. Graham worked on him 3-years. I do not believe all of those other publicly committed 4star recruits will sign on signing day.

Jones is no Majors, Fulmer, Dickey; is worlds away from Robert Neyland. Jones is here because Hart botched the search. Jones is shark enough to have sent messages that when Dooley failed, he wanted 2be next. (UT pays big $$$ & guarantees payment, regardless of performance.) W/leadership like that, no wonder UT Athletics are almost broke, & have turned into major men's sports losers.

I wish I believed Jones et al can return the Vols to championship level. At best the jury is out & will be for 3 or 4 years. So he would not get my 4 or 5star recruit. I wish I could think otherwise.

Wagee's ignorance is exceeded only by his ability to suck up to new coaches, posing as a sports writer that they need not offend, until they find out what is behind that voice on the conference call news conferences.

He really does not know much about the way games are played or won; over time reading his comments shows just how far form real understanding of sports his thoughts are.

Pay him no mind, even if he sometimes sounds reasonable. He is not; as Hunter Thompson would say, he's just another bozo on the bus.

Born2ride is a real live, top tier, multiple decade, spend the money to see the team, knows some insiders Vol football fan. He is not some West Tennessee, small town sports writer guy trying to impress the hometown folks about his connections.

Between Born2Ride & Wagee, I'd trust Born2ride, and actively distrust Wagee.

Just that simple.

I'm not sure how you got that I was bashing Coach Jones in my post. I was simply stating the fact that if UT fans are honest with themselves, this class is a disappointment. So, just to let you know. I fully support Jones and hope for the best. He seems to be a good football Xs and Os coach. I guess we'll find out for sure next year how good a recruiter he is.

The entire athletic department has slowly deteriorated into one of the SECs worst. The football program has become one of the nations most laughed at teams. Martin couldnt coach his way onto most high profile secondary school teams but yet we hired him. The jury is still out on Warlick but it appears she is in something thats over her head. Our baseball program has become totally questionable and it seems the list grows on and on. Ever since Joe Johnson left, Tennessees athletic program has been on the skids. Current leadership cannot, dont know how, or dont care to produce a competitive athletic department to even match what it was when I went to school there in the late 70s and there were plenty of issues then. We have issues at the top my friends and until that gets resolved, its going to be a long, tough road with more disappointments for the majority of our sports programs. With that said, our players and future players have made commitments to the orange and deserve our support. Lets make sure we give them that in light of where we all know the issues truly lie. GBO!

Jabo Lee, 3 star RB, committed yesterday.

After his junior year he was projected to be a 4 star RB. But after gaining 126 yards in the first game of his senior season, he injured his knee and played sparingly the rest of that year, finishing with just 137 yards. He had committed early to ECU, but when Jay Graham brought him the opportunity to play in the SEC- that changed.

2011 Highlights: Lee rushed for 1,557 yards and scored 29 touchdowns. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfCPV_...

2010 Highlights: Lee set his school's record with 30 touchdowns.
