Defensive line has to be the most pressing need. UT will not be relevant again in the SEC until there is a real pass rush again.

Vol_For_Life writes:

Sadly, it seems as though we will need everything next year. I'm not convinced Worley is an SEC qb. We have no returning wrs and rbs are average at best. Defensive line and secondary are major concerns as well. Hopefully some guys on the team will step it up next year

If you look at where we were weakest last season, it would have to be defensive backs. However, whether we were so weak there due to talent, scheme, or just piss poor coaching I don't know. I'm trusting that Coach Jones and his staff know what we need.

Kind of looking like a long to do list but except for this current class Dooley did bring in some talent, just not Bama, Fla kind of talent..Iam also not sold on Worley but Ferguson looks very promising to me,of course there is no way he can make an impact with one fall camp..We have been gutted at WR and short of landing a 4 star WR we won't get much help there...Iam pretty disgusted with our inability to sign a top notch RB and Iam not holding my breath that we manage any better than landing a RB who is any better than #32 at that position this year

Who is Bray's backup?

A top flight RB is important, but the priority has to be Def. line and secondary.

oldster writes:

The idea of addition through subtraction comes to mind. While losing the three juniors may seem like an overall minus on the field, the loss of Bray's questionable leadership skills, Hunter's crucial drops, and Patterson's lack of understanding of the routes he was to run may well offset much of that loss, but getting rid of Sal Sunseri alone was enough to make up for all the personel losses. I am just concerned that UTK will need to change its name to the University of Cincinnati at Knoxville.

FanNotSheep writes:

If you want to beat the big boys you need some big men in the trenches. UT finally has a competitive offensive line, but with no receivers returning and no star running backs, it will be another losing season. Defensive line has to be top priority. If you can stop the run and sack the QB, you can hide lots of problems in the defensive backfield. If you can't control the line of scrimmage you can't win in this league.

BigOrangeFreak writes:

I noticed Athletic Director was not one of the poll choices.

It's easy to say that we need to recruit defensive backs after this season, but we MUST get back to being able to run the football.

undefeaTed writes:

Honestly, I think our Defense will be much improved next year with the personel we have. Our O-line is the best in the SEC maybe, and CBJ will pick the QB that will make us a winning team. Biggest needs are DB or WR, and a good RB couldnt hurt.

That's BS!! Not a single player at QB we have or have coming in would have been able to slice up SCAR,UGA,UF, or any other team we played like Bray did! So kill that BS nonsense about anyone being better! Get over youself, because besides some of his short comings he's still one of the top 10 Best QB's in the nation! Not his fault we had a horrible defense. A decent defense, we would have won 9 games plus a bowl victory over any team outside the SEC! Then you'd be begging him to stay!

OldVols68 writes:

Unfortunately the naysayers are right: we need so many improvements everywhere, Dooley really blew it as a coach because he did not go out recruiting as THE head coach...he "delegated". Thus he left the cupboard pretty bare. I voted OTHER, but I feel we probably need more speed, especially on defense (everywhere). But then we need to get some of ... well. everything.

Also, we could use better kicking ...Palardy was and is not what we need. God, I miss the old days..........but then I am 68 yrs old, so that goes back a lot further than a lot of people on this site ever saw:)

cdd didn't sign any off linemen last class. i HAS to be the priority. how is it last. maybe that's why we are where we are right now. our own fan base knows nothing.

I understand your point but ALL head coaches "delegate" recruiting and the head coaches usually come in to follow up...not the same in basketball ball though...notice I said "usually"

If we can pick up Derrick Green (and he is as good as everyone thinks he is) I would think we would run a pro style offense which would probably suit Worley better.

If we don't get Green then I suspect our talent would be more suited to a spread offense which probably gives Peterman the edge.

Wow! I didn't notice that. I think the limit is 25. There are probably loopholes that would allow them to sign 2 or 3 more in any year, but it sounds like they are going to have a number of commitments who will have to gray shirt or go somewhere else.

I also noted that A&M signed Cameron Clear. Clearly (no pun intented) A&M is not that concerned about character.

I totally agree! Dang how I wish we would have had a decent defense this year (even average)... Saturdays would have been so much more fun.

Vols,

When you look back at the rosters of the last several years, it does make you wonder why we recruited certain players. Some of them hardly ever saw the field, and football-wise, it seemed like a wasted scholarship.

With the thousands of talented high school kids out there, it would figure we'd get at least some of them who would make a difference. For instance, the 6:01, 220 type running back who can break tackles and pull away from people. Or the defensive backs who can over and not simply wait til' the other guys catch the ball, and then try to run them down. Or, a defensive player or two who can rush the passer ( such as Clowney ) and maybe some wide receivers who can run routes and catch the ball, and not be 5:09 and 150 lbs!

Maybe also a punter, kicker who is consistent. In a nutshell, the Vols have created a back off attitude from a lot of kids. We talk about all the great facilities etc, but that doesn't necessarily cut it. Many kids are still going to places with much more inferior facilities, smaller stadiums, etc. The bottom line is you just have to already have the winning program to get the good guys............or, the rich get richer, ala Alabama.

Most Vol fans remember when it was the other way around, so that's what we need to recapture. When that happens is anybody's guess.

Ha, ha, ha

Slice up who? Tyler Bray was only capable of leading wins over Vandy and Kentucky in his three years. Vandy once and Kentucky once.

I've yet to hear anyone say that AJ McCarron sliced up anyone... but he's won a helluva lot of games at QB.

BluezVol writes:

QB - I'll gladly take a QB who can check down for the 3-6 yard play and systematically move the team downfield for a win - rather than the guy who can throw it 50 yards off his back foot for 1 completion in 7 tries.

RB - it would be nice to get someone who won't hesitate at the line and can pull away from LBs

WR - make clutch catches no matter their speed and size

DBs - not wait until the receiver catches the ball to react to it; be a ball hawk, play your scheme well and be coachable

Worley's going to surprise you. He's tough and a baller. Somewhat like Heath Shuler in all phases. He just needs game experience.

All the above. And by the way 40th ranked recruiting class isn't the answer either.
