  • IdleAire Inc. CEO Mike Fielden said negotiations with TravelCenters of America fell through and some structures of the service bays for truck drivers, such as at the Lovell Road travel center, are being demolished.
  • Nissan North America unveiled a prototype of its LEAF five-door electric-powered hatchback on Jan. 15 at World’s Fair Park. Knoxville is among three Tennessee cities that will be getting 900 of the vehicles plus 2,700 electric charging stations as part of a pilot program. One of the charging stations is at left.
  • Customers book flights at the Allegiant Air desk at McGhee Tyson Airport Thursday prior to a news conference in which the airline announced nonstop flights from Knoxville to Myrtle Beach, S.C., beginning April 22.
  • Will Capello and his niece Brooke Barcelona try out a bumper boat at The Track Family Recreation Center in Pigeon Forge. They were members of a Louisiana family that had to cancel part of their Gulf Coast vacation plans because of the BP oil spill and instead vacationed in Sevier County.
  • Tourists are beginning to flock to Pigeon Forge as the summer months approach, and officials say at least some of them are visitors who have canceled Gulf Coast vacation plans because of the oil spill.
  • Fuel prices in Knoxville are up slightly from a year ago, but are trending down. Travel is expected to increase this Memorial Day weekend compared with 2009.
  • Artist Jim Gray, who will be opening a new gallery in Gatlinburg on March 15, says he draws his inspiration from nature, like the surroundings of his home in South Knoxville.
  • Bob Adkinson, with the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corp., demonstrates how to use the TouchKnow&Go electronic information kiosk at the Knoxville Visitor Center on Gay Street. The kiosks, which Adkinson helped develop, are already at four locations in Knoxville, and other sites are being planned.
  • City Business: Opportunities for Your Company, a workshop sponsored by the city and the Knology broadband communications company, gave about 200 area business people a chance to learn how to be vendors and contractors for the city of Knoxville.
  • Visitors to the News Sentinel Auto Show had plenty to browse, from sports cars to trucks, as 17 auto manufacturers had new products on display.
  • The Complete Streets concept under study by the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization calls for sidewalks as a way to help provide safe use of roads for different modes of transportation.
  • The new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Facility is about halfway
through construction at McGhee Tyson Airport. The
19,700-square-foot structure replaces the older facility, built
in 1980 and seen through the beams of the new structure. In
the background is the main terminal at McGhee Tyson.
