Wow! It is ironic that this article appears the same day that another reveals Chris Lofton's battle with cancer. Talk about your contrasts in character...

mcbrim unless ya'll moved TT to defense he's going to have a hard time keeping us from hanging a 55 on ya. You going to play "slowdown" like your BB team did in K-town when we hung a 100 on ya?

johnlgoo - No kool-aid necessary. Out of the chute this "D" will be miles ahead of the one that got punked by Cali & the Gators last Sept. Most of the same guys, just older and more experienced. As you say though better D doesn't necessarily translate into a better record. This coming season rides on O line and QB play even more than most years. If we can get a good and consistent run game going (read can pick up 3rd and 1 or 2 at will) and JC doesn't go "'05 LSU Eric Ainge" on us they will be in every game. How many they're ahead in when the clock goes double oughts is anyone's guess. If they can pull out a win at UCLA and go into conference play with some confidence and a little swagger that could be the difference between playing for a championship and going 8-4 and Peach Bowl bound. Hey that's why they play the games, cause no one really knows who will be good week to week.

General agree with your logic but can we make it 4 yards and a COD?

2006 was a major step up from '05 and '07 was better than '06 because the Vols won the bowl game and represented well in SECCG. The general concensus seems to be '08 we take a step back. Guess we won't know anything until September for sure. On the positive side D should be better, we'll have a QB that's healthy and can take a hit, and we should have a receiver corp to throw to. We're in desperate need of that special running back many of us thought Coke might be. Both D tackle and O line are concern. Don't see much immediate help from this Frosh class. 9-3, 8-4 and a Peach Bowl invite would seem to be most folks take. Maybe this can be a 1989 class. But that's more hope than dope.

utchris - I agree that Raleigh is a "good" hire, but probably not a "god" hire. To be a "god" hire Raleigh would have to have a Bruce Pearl type season. But hey, there's still lot's of baseball left to play.

I say hold out Crompton, divide the squad up evenly (let the O & D coordinators be HC's for a day and chose up sides) and play a real football game! That would be worth $20.00. A controlled scrimmage should be free!

Went to LA for the 1989 game. UCLA was ranked 6th nationally, Vols had struggled to beat Colorado State in the Home Opener and after the '88 debacle (younger Vol fans think 2005) Vols were 15 point dogs. Sat with some UCLA fans and shared their Brie and Chardonay (no joke) while we spanked the Briuns 24-6. Have to say the UCLA faithful took that whipping way better than a home UT crowd would have under similar circumstances. A repeat performance would be sweet.

Rating stars mean more when evaluating skill position players; QB's, WR's, RB's etc. There is such a physical transformation from being a HS Sr. to being a starting lineman in the SEC its harder to tell who will grow up and who won't. Its just easier to look at 4.2 speed and say wow what a prospect than to look at 6'3" 265 and see what the kid will be like in 2 years.
