not flashy like quarterbacks, running backs or wide receivers but most coaches will tell you this is where games are won or lost.
With improvement in defense ( and my god we couldn't be worse) there is hope for a decent year.
If we could add a qb who could or would run on 3rd and 4 every now and then instead of throw it in the stands we might even be good not great but good enough to compete and win.

funny how folks forget that exact same group of defenders the year before were 26th in the country in total defense and no one ever mentioned they were slow.
It's hard to be fast when you and in most cases the coach don't know where you are going and who to cover.
Although I will agree we will miss the 3 players mentioned and speed is important.

The family you fail to mention have given more money to the university and numerous charitable causes and foundations than you could imagine.

The Vols are in a bad spell that most if not all teams go through and when it ends and it will end it will be nice to know you won't be there.

I have been at peace with this process from the start because once you have had Derek Dooley as your head coach it can only get better.

Why is this a circus?
I think it is just the opposite. Dave Hart is quietly going about the very serious business of hiring the next UT coach.
Hart has said from the start he will not make any statements until he announces his hire.
Hart's refusal to comment on rumors or speculation now make him look more focused and serious on this hire.
The media has no info or real sources since all the powers(the Haslam's) publicly have stated they have no part in this process.Only Dave Hart knows who and whats going on and he isn't saying.
I actually have a new respect for Mr Hart and his refusal to be badgered by the media.
The good news folks is no matter who it is we will have a better coach than the one that just left!
Be patient and--------------- whoever he hires get on board support the vols.

Just saw the you tube video of the 9 yr old girl Sam Gordon you should watch it she is amazing.
My first thought was how many yards she would put against UT's defense she averages over 200 yards per game and has 35 td's
Then I realized she was a girl and only 9 yrs old so we could probably hold her under 100unless her coach let's her run the qb draw or catch passes then it would be a toss up.
I can not believe the number of post giving this guy credit for accepting responsibility for our pathetic defense.

I have been a fan over 50 years and these last 6 or so years have been unbearable.
Remember the "CLAWFENCE" when we had games we could not complete a pass and sometimes it would be 3rd qtr before we crossed mid field or got a 1st down!

That is my point exactly, I did this as a joke to be a pretend fan for some team that was in the title hunt. It sort of grew and heck I had a great time with it.My wife would crack up when I would have a long conversation with strangers about "our" tigers My only rule was no matter who is in the top five I could never pick BAMA.

Last yr even though I have followed UT for 50 plus years and will be a fan for the rest of my life football season had once again lost its luster and had become boring.
I made a fateful decision I decide I would pick me a top 5 team and follow them they would sort of become my boys so to speak.Well I picked LSU quite honestly this started as joke sort of like picking a fantasy team.
Then a miracle happened that same week LSU goes int Bama and beats BAMA! All the sudden people started talking to me because of my LSU hat BAMA fans just looked pissed and I actually got a discount from a manager at the local restaraunt!Before you know it what started as joke turned into something fun I started keeping up with LSU (still pulled for my vols in their games)learned their roster and had a blast all they way till the NC game when WE (sarcasm) lost.
I have decided once again this year to do the same (especially after last nights performance)
For 2012 my new "boys" will be ----- OREGONshoot why not they are fun as hll to watch and they play USC later in 2012.

Watched games all day yesterday with tailbacks busting the hole and breaking tackles It was refreshing, at first I had a hard time recognizing this phenomenon since the last time I saw it at UT game a guy named Hardesty was toting the ball.
Who knew how bad we would miss Crompton!(SARCASM) Simms and Whorley make him look like Peyton Manning
Speaking of Whorley NO ONE should be blaming any of this mess on him he was just minding his business riding out his planned red shirt year waiting for his time to come in probably 2 yearsthen Dooley begins to see 3 and 8 or 4 and 7 this year not the presumed 6-6 and music city bowl and panics.
Nash Nance is like a reliever in the pen ready to go and the last pitcher has given up 9 home runs in a row and the manager still thinks I like my chances with the guy in the game (not saying Nance is any good but man they must really think he sucks)
Who knew Tyler Bray was our version of the colts Peyton Manning I mean you go from a team that can throw the ball to a team that cant get a single 1st down in an entire half or complete a .basic pass play . Enough with the old school everything pro set pro type offense that has no room for a QB that could possibly oh lets say run for 5 yards every now and then. Open this thing up spread the field throw it 40 times if you have to.

One reason and one reason only for Dooley to take the red shirt off Whorley and that is to beat SC pure and simple.
Dooley is a smart man he knows 7-5 will be seen as a huge improvement whether it really is our not it will be perceived that way.
At first I was against it but after thinking about it----- why not? It is obvious Simms is not an SEC QB (no knock on a good tough kid thrown in against the best but he is not an SEC QB) and I'm not getting any younger.

It just shows what a loss Hunter was, not only did we lose Hunter we also now have Rogers.We went from a future NFL player to a guy that wouldn't make the travel team by most SEC schools.
Rogers drops are nothing new he has done this since arriving in Knoxville and if I remember correctly had a huge drop against LSU last year when we were trying to kill clock at the end.

sorry for the rant but as a Tennessee fan for over 50 years I am really frustrated with not just this year but the last 6 to 8 or however long this non sense has been going on.
The bad news is the SEC east is there for the taking, this year a slightly above average team will win it and we can't even field a average team.
As a final note I do believe it is ridiculous to talk about firing Dooley he did inherit a mess and deserves a couple more years but--------I think I speak for lot's of real vol fans when I say in my gut I don't think he is the guy to get it done--- I hope I'm wrong.
