When Chris Low wrote for the Tennessean, the Tennessean had better UT coverage than the News-Sentinel. Apparently, the News Sentinel Sports editors/writers are now so lacking in content that they have to re-print columns and stories from other papers. If you're going to copy day-old columns from other papers...at least pick good ones, not crap like this.

"Consildate the men's and women's athletic departments. Alabama has 224 staff members in the AD and UT AD (men and women) has 284. UT has an AD payroll of close to 13 million. Bama has a payorll of about 9 million."

Uhh, maybe it's because UT has a far superior athletic department, particularly on the women's side. Maybe it's because is far more successful in raisning money than those at Capstone.

Joan Cronan has done a terrific job of increasing the donor and fan base. We have top women's programs in basketball, softball, golf, soccer, track, among others. The women's program is not completely self-sufficient money-wise, but it's light years ahead of most schools.

How many season ticket holders for women's basketball at Alabama pay a donotation for the right to buy season tickets? How many $1,000+ donors do they have exclusively for women's athletics at Bama?

I will echo some of the prior comments about business of the athletic department v. funding of academic departments. The KNS does NOT raise the level of information or understanding with stories like this. How about including information on how the athletic department pays for all the parking garages on campus, yet only uses them 20 or so times a year. How about showing how much money football brings in to support non-revenue sports. Hundreds of young people, particularly women, would not have the opportunity to have an athletic scholarship absent the big-budget sports. How about the million bucks the athletic department contributes to academic programs every year. I guess facts like this would get in the way of a story with a catchy headline.

The raises for our coaches and overall athletic budget show one thing...athletics are successful at Tennessee. That's a good thing.

Dearest Ashley, pray tell what college do you think would be better for young Mr. Negedu?

I was at a meeting when Ohio State's coach was asked if it was worth him being 'one and done' to have Greg Oden. He said, of course it was. Ohio State would not have been near as successful that one year.

So, even if he's one and done, we want Scotty at Tennessee. I'd think Scotty will get a lot of pub on his signing today. Also good for the Vols.

I know Memphis changed it's name...to hopefully change it's image. If you only knew how much I know about Memphis and that school. It will always be Memphis State to me. How many degrees do you hold Mike? Any from Memphis?

Crow? How about No. 1 RPI from January to the end of season. How about playing and beating, what 4 or 5 of the Sweet 16, including Memphis, all on the road? How many non-cons did Memphis play on the road?

I see you have nothing to say about being a real University, complete with campus life, campus sports and tough traditional rivals. It figures. Cruising down Central Avenue in East Memphis doesn't match Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville, University Avenue in Gainesville or Tuscaloosa or downtown Athens, GA on gameday. Memphis and Calipari know if they lose their grip in basketball, they lose much more. There's nothing else. That's why Cal wants to play in Nashville. Losing at home and in Knoxville stinks.

Take heart fellow Vols fans, we have something Memphis State doesn't...a real University. Memphis State has a good basketball team, but what else? No campus life, no on-campus athletic facilities, no other sports which compete on a national level and fans who really have no idea what big-time college athletics is all about. Plus, in its one sport, basketball, Memphis State plays in a conference which produces no other NCAA teams. They have to go play in front of a few thousand in places like Huntington, WV, Tulsa, OK and Hattiesburg, MS. Do Memphis State fans actually show up to see games against these teams, which would be some of the worst teams on Tennessee's pre-season schedule, much less conference schedule?

Compare all this to Tennessee, which competes on a national level in multiple sports, offers a complete college experience for it's student-athletes, competes in a conference which has some of the most storied teams in college athletics (the list is long in all sports, basktball included) and Tennessee has some of the finest on-campus facilities for all major sports, including one of the best football stadiums (ESPN says the best place to watch college football in America) and an on-campus basketball arena which compares to the NBA arenas, including the one Memphis State borrows for it's supposedly so-important basketball team.

In basketball, Tennessee not only will go play national teams like Texas, Gonzaga, Xavier, West Virginia and Ohio State (all these teams were on our schedule this year and most were road games), Tennessee's conference schedule also requires getting up most every night because you have to play the likes of Kentucky in Rupp Arena, Florida in the O-Dome and Vanderbilt in Memorial Gym, just to mention a few. Tennessee has to compete against outstanding teams, night after night.

Memphis State may win some basketball games. But, Tennessee beat them this year and holds a winning record overall. Other than a competitive basketball team, Memphis State has nothing else to offer. Calipari didn't want to play the Vols. He knew he had more to lose. While other Tennessee coaches have beaten Memphis State, with Coach Bruce Pearl, the style he plays and the relationship he has with his players, Coach Cal and Memphis State knows they will continue to be the step-child to the west, clamoring for attention at one time per year. With Pearl, Memphis State will struggle to hold on to it's claim as a 'national power'.

It's great to be a Tennessee Vol...It's great to be a Tennessee Vol!

Contract requires him to be highest paid. Hey, he won didn't he? If he loses, LSU will spending a lot of money for a long time and will have difficulty ever paying a new coach much less.

Miles should send a thank-you note to Saban. Is Jimmy Sexton Miles' agent? If not, Miles and his agent should send a nice gift Sexton's way too.

Fulmer is going to get a raise. I think Hamilton's already said that. I don't think he'll make over $3M, but he'll be in the $2.6-2.8 range.

We'll start hearing more about Pearl and possible job openings. How much do Roy Williams, Calipari, Pitino, Gillespie make? Given what he's accomplished, I think we'll have to put him close to those numbers. We need to pay him, but surely Bruce will have some loyalty to the Vols. I mean geez, he's a king here. Given all he's got, the grass don't get much greener.

Amazing. Tennessee...No. 1 RPI since January. Top 1 or 2 toughest schedule. Play on the road against tough teams. And, we're No. 4.

I don't have a quarrel with UNC. But, Memphis amassing wins courtesy of a weak Conf. USA schedule and playing few tough teams and none on the road AND UCLA who has a No. 6 RPI with not as many 'good' wins. I guess in the end I can swallow UCLA, but not Memphis. Not given the above and that we beat 'em at their place.

I hope Pearl preaches that these guys are getting no respect. I take heart that the tourney selection committee doesn't rank teams like the AP or Coaches. Let's win 3 in Atlanta and give us a No. 1 seed.

Amazing how the officiating goes largely unnoticed in the biggest game of the year (Memphis, national TV, highest TV audience, etc, etc), yet the officials become part of the story at Vanderbilt (not the reason we lost, but bad officiating never helps) and now this. Seems like some officials want to be part of the show, some can't call a game consistent and some are so eratic in making calls it screws up the flow of the game.

The SEC shares officials with the ACC. Wonder how they feel over there about these guys.

Memphis plays Tulsa and Southern Miss. We play No. 14 Vandy at their place and Kentucky, with a 10-3 SEC record) at home. The Vols have a RealTime RPI SOS of No. 2. Memphis comes in at No. 40 with few tough games over the entire season (us being one of 'em). Memphis is a good team. Maybe a Top 10 or better team when all is said and done. But for right now, they should not be ranked above the Tennessee.

Like always, the Vols just need to win. While I don't like being stuck below the Tigers, it will all take care of itself in the end...if we win.

On UT drops to No. 4
