Even the most simple level of analysis eludes you, unless you are just going "Neener neener!" to the group. The defensive scheme and the coaches we know were a problem last year. This year, we'll see. More than likely things will be much better.

I may have gotten a little carried away with that post per the ocean front property I'll give you that but come on..... don't blame coaches and scheme. Your secondary let you get blown up. Any how, If you upset anyone from the East it would likely be Florida. They can't pass and their O line is so-so, certainly not Georgia.

Prepare to be Butch's B!TCHES!

Not defending the poster you were responding to but the Dawgs usually have a tough game against UT. Vandy only scored 3 points against Georgia and Georgia could have scored a hundred against them that night but Richt put the brakes on. It's the SEC. UT played uSC much closer than Georgia did.

This is getting old. UT won 5 games last year with the worst coach and the worst DC in the country. No way do we win only 5 games.

More likely 8 or 9.

Well UT is returning 8 whoops 7 starters from that stellar D. The one that gave up 6.5 YPP and 475 yards per game. Of course the skill spots on O will need to continue at the same pace as last years squad. So yeah... hmmm 8 or 9 wins. Sure. I can see that. Now I have some ocean front property. Right outside of Knoxvegas and it is close to the river. I can sell this for a great investor with vision. One who can see the future. I'm thinking your that visionary. ;-)

Well, look at what our record was with a great O-line and loads of offensive talent. Now, we still have a great O-line, and a fraction of the level of skill position players we used to have.

Then, we lose almost the entire line after this year, and have a ton of talented 18yr olds coming in. But, these 18yr olds are gonna need time (at least a year) to develop into SEC calibur players.

I'm just indicating that the fan base should be looking forward to an outstanding 2015 and beyond....not this year or next. What's so wrong/off about that assessment?

My bad .... I read it as you were making a point about this years O line. Last year loss was all on your secondary. Your D line was equal to Georgia's... and that ain't special. Where you are weakest is the O skill spots and that secondary. That's gonna cost. Petrino will be a handful...bank on it. I see a 5 win season and beat Missouri. Vandy and Auburn won't be a good match up for you cause their strengths are your weakness. If you upset someone that you shouldn't more power to you. And you earn bragging rights. BUT you got your work cut out for you.

"After Kiffin bolted, Tennessee hired the polar opposite from a personality standpoint and in doing so brought in a coach who was coming off a three year career as a head coach at Louisiana Tech. Derek Dooley was not only unqualified to lead a big-time SEC program, but he’d struggled at a mid-major (he was 17-20 at LA Tech and was 4-8 in his last season there). Expectations were high (of course), and he couldn’t meet them."

Written on John Adams: UT's upset-minded fans should have Georgia on their mind:

in response to ArnieFife:

I agree completely.

Are you two sure you're Vol fans?.... cause the O line was very good last year and will likely be this year as well.
"1. The offensive line

It's pretty easy to spot a strength on Tennessee's offense for 2013, and it's the big guys up front. The group's credentials: four seniors, 123 combined career starts and a likely NFL first-round draft pick at left tackle.

Tackle Ja'Wuan James and guard Zach Fulton remained entrenched on the right side of the line, James Stone is locked in at center and rising junior Antonio "Tiny" Richardson is back for his second (and likely last) season at left tackle. The coaches must replace Dallas Thomas, but Marcus Jackson and Alex Bullard were nonstarters who played very regularly last season. It'll be an important spring for the Vols to develop younger players for 2014, when the line must reload.

With an impressive combination of experience and talent, Tennessee's offensive line must be an anchor for the Vols as they transition to a new coaching staff, and if the 2012 season was any indication -- Tennessee tailbacks averaged better than 4.5 yards per carry and allowed only eight sacks in Tyler Bray's 451 passes -- the front five will be up to that challenge."

I don't know which is worse... the Vol fan base's football acumen or the Vol D secondary.

Well we still have to play the games right? And we still have to pay the light bill. It's been a struggle lately. Maybe we'll get lucky and end up in Atlanta..... again. We will do our best with what little we have. You've been an excellent example of endeavoring to persevere.

Big reason GA has a winning streak going is the QB's are good and don't make mistakes and Richt is recruiting at such a high level. Also in years past the RB's have been pretty average. Now they have a 2 headed RB beast just like Bama has a 5 headed RB beast. On the plus side they lost 7 starters on defense but they won't be replaced by nobody freshman. IMO there is no way to replace Jones,Ogletree and CB Sanders Cummings. If I remember right the Vol game was where Ogletree returned to the line up and he changed the whole complexion of the game and defense. None of this matters if our defense doesn't do a total 360. Our secondary was awful against them. We were making a serious comeback until Murray hit Bennett with a TD pass with no Vol DB within 25 yards, Bennett could have hop scotched untouched to the end zone.

" A year ago Georgia started the season with only 24 scholarship players on defense. Four players, including Rambo and Ogletree, had multi-game suspensions.

Right now Grantham has 38 players available if they all stay healthy until the opener with Clemson on Aug. 31.

And…

… in the last two seasons Georgia’s defense has forced 62 turnovers (second only to LSU in the SEC), while the Bulldogs have twice won the SEC East."

honestly any of those games COULD happen. no one knows what Oregon will look like without Kelly and its their first "big" game without him. UGA lost everyone from their defense who knows if they will be even decent. No real reason to believe UF can play offense or that that defense will be as good without Elam he cleaned up a lot of mistakes for them. And who knows what we have on Offense or D with capable coaching. Basically we are all guessing until kickoff. My guess UT beats UF and UGA or Oregon and UGA. No reason to believe otherwise until I see everyone play

in response to EastTnVols962:

He's a Florida troll. His "eight" is referring to the current win streak Florida has over UT. But since you asked the question, let me try and come up with an answer. It should be noted, that this is all subjective, and I don't neccessarily expect it, not saying it isn't at all possible.

Let's start with the should be gimmes: Austin Peay, W. Kentucky, S. Alabama, and UK SHOULD all be wins. That's four so far. Let's delve in deeper. Missouri should have been a win last season, if not for our at the time candy arse coach. This year we go to Colombia, but I believe the Vols will pull one out there. That's five. Auburn was the worst team in the SEC last year. Granted they have a lot of talent, and an improved head coach in Malzhan, I think that game being at Neyland gives the Vols an edge. That's six. Here's where it gets shaky. I honestly believe this: Franklin has clearly taken Vandy to new heighths, and that cannot be denied. They had a very good team last year. But, if you watched UT throughout the season, especially against UGA and USC, it's obvious that we were not as bad as the Vandy score reflected. We simply gave up at that point all throughout the team, coaches included. They're coming to Neyland this year, and this team has not forgot what happened last year. A solid 60 minutes of football and I think we can take home a "W". That would make seven. This is where it get very tricky, and I cannot make a bold prediction either way. I honestly do not think we take Oregon in Eugene, and for the simple fact that we have to travel to Gainesville the next week, the UF game seems unlikely as well. And let's be honest, does anyone really expect the biggest upset of the year to take place in Tuscaloosa? Of course not. So that leaves two very good and very powerful teams in UGA and USC. Luckily we have both at home. If I was forced to pick one, I would go USC, simply because of the open week to prepare. Based on performance against these two teams last year, I don't think it's at all realistic to say the Vols don't have a chance. Both games were ours to win, yet we coughed up the football both times. The key is going to be our offense. If they can move the ball and put up some points, I beleive we can keep these close. And maybe since they're both at home, those drives will go in our favor this year. So an upset over either would make eight. Will it happen, most likely not, but it isn't completely impossible. I believe we'll know more for sure after our trip to Eugene. Just my opinions. Go Vols!

Hard to argue with that prognostication. I was shocked when uSC pulled off the victory. I was relieved when Georgia did the same. Win those games and SOD is still coaching at UT. Missouri is much improved and you are at their house. CLose game. Beat Vandy and shut them up or they will get into your players heads for a while. UT's got a O line with some NFL lineman. I give the edge to UT. But Georgia's O can run and pass and I do sense they control clock with the ground game and score at will with that aerial circus. Edge Georgia. If UT were to pull an upset I would say they do it against the Gators. Vols O matches up better against the Gator D. Gator O well they don't really have an O line and their QB is not a game changer. UT will upset the gators.

" Under Richt’s direction, Florida State had some of college football's most explosive offenses. In his seven years as offensive coordinator the Seminoles ranked in the nation’s top five scoring offenses on five occasions, were top twelve in total offense five times and top twelve in passing offense five times. The 2000 Seminoles offense finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 yards per game), first in passing offense (384.0 ypg) and third in scoring offense (42.4 points per game).

During his tenure as an assistant coach at Florida State, Richt coached two Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke respectively and was part of two national championships (1993 and 1999).[1]"

It is realistic to say that this is probably going to be another tough season, but if we lose a game, I don't think it will be due to sorry coaching like it was last season. Offensively, we lost a lot of weapons. If not for that, I would think a challenge for the East would be reasonable this year. Having to replace Bray, Patterson, and Hunter isn't going to be easy, but by mid-season, we should be lookin' up. I'm excited. Go VOLS!

"in the short term, there is the predictable bump that a program gets from the burst of energy from a new staff, but it is unlikely they are able to fully address all their weaknesses in one ore two recruiting classes, the SEC is a tough place for incomplete football teams.

I really have no idea how Jones will turn out as a coach. Its hard to contexualize a coach has two 3 year stints following the same coach where the “heavy lifting” had been done. Urban Meyer is perhaps the classic case of an “overnight” success in 6 years from Bowling Green to a national title at UF, but again, the level of success he had had at Both Bowling green and Utah was unprecedented at both places. further, he and mullen could legitimately claim to having developed a proprietary version of the spread option.

Jones has not done either of those things….that does not mean he can’t or won’t succeed, but it simply means he is like any other hire in that it will take time to know whether or not he can build a winning program in the most competitive conference in college football."'

Good point, Hart has done nothing but trim the fat off of a program that was too nice to say goodbye. It's a business (big business) now for the athletic departments of major conference schools. If you don't have a numbers guy in place (instead of some retired coach milking the budget) you're going to left in the dust. Hamilton was only good at raising money, he didn't know how to negotiate contracts (case and point the Dooley deal) and was not on par with other AD's in the SEC. Hart on the other hand has been in rebuild mode since day one, and that included hiring new coaches' and restructuring an athletic department that had been mismanaged for 25 years.
