So sick of having to listen to the coaches talk about everything except what was really the problem at UCLA, which is that offensively AND defensively we once again go away from what is clearly working to what is not.

On New alignment not part of Vols' problems

One of those "mistakes" that the coaching staff noticed darn well better be that the staff, more than anything else, cost us the game with an offensive game plan that didn't take advantage of what was obviously working. Rather than continue to run until UCLA stacked the line and then take advantage of opportunities in the passing game, we asked an inexperienced and obviously struggling QB to throw the ball 41 times. THAT is the biggest mistake of the entire game.

Running game was neglected. We threw 42 passes compared to 34 running plays, but even that doesn't show the disparity because 6 of those runs were Crompton getting flushed out of the pocket or being sacked, 2 of them were the G-gun and there was 1 handoff to Cooper. So basically, we called 25 runs for Foster and Hardesty combined. They averaged 6.5 per carry between them. They each should have had about 6-8 more carries. That is less bad passing, more wear on UCLA's defense, more time off the clock to keep UCLA's offense off the field, and probably another 80 - 100 yards rushing. The Vols would have likely won quite comfortably. Instead, we kept throwing with a fairly inexperienced QB who was clearly struggling. I just don't understand that at all.

Biggest factor IMO was coaching. We should have run the ball a lot more than we did, and we would have won the game comfortably. Foster and Hardesty were GASHING UCLA...on the occasions when we gave them the ball. But every time we started moving the ball on the ground, we would go away from it. Essentially, we were having our way with the Bruins on the ground, but decided to rest our offensive game plan on the shoulder of an inexperienced QB who was clearly struggling. Brilliant.

Proper use, improper use...at least it got SOME use.

orangeblood nailed the Syracuse pass interference call. I'm sick to death of hearing different people bring up that doggone call as if it was some stroke of luck that saved our season. IT WAS PASS INTER-FREAKIN'-FERENCE! If the DB had not hit our WR from behind before the ball arrived, there's about a 95% chance it would have been a first down completion. PLEASE quit bringing this one up as if the Vols got some kind of "fortuitous" (i.e. lucky) break.

I agree that UCLA could still be dangerous and the Vol players should understand that. As far as this being a "trap" game, I don't see how your opening game on the road on primetime television against a name opponent could possibly qualify as a trap game. The Vols have ZERO excuses for overlooking this game. We've got UAB, the biggest joke of a joke conference, after this one. There is no reason whatsoever the Vols should not come out ready to play. If I had to peg a trap game on our schedule, Miss State might be a good candidate.

On UCLA quarterback has tough practice

I'm pulling for G. Williams as much as anyone, and appreciate his tenacity. That said, I see no facts that indicate the NCAA, or anyone other than he himself, is responsible for his situation.

This is potentially great news about Poole. Lennon Creer may be great but is pretty untested at this point with most of his yards last season coming in the game against a weak directional Louisiana team; Hardesty has an unfortunate history of injuries, and even Foster has a bit of a gimpy knee. Poole may get to play earlier than anyone expects by necessity, so it's good to hear that he's doing well.

D Line is what I'd like to see perform well, but I don't think UCLA's running game will be a very good barometer from all accounts I've read. Of course, with a third team QB running the show and a supposedly weak running game, if our DL struggles in this game it could be a tough year. Then again, lots of things look a lot different in the first game than they do later in the season. Who thought Cal was going to be basically a .500 team last year after they shelled us in the first game?
