Written on What do you think about the Vols' gray uniform?:

Sheesh people it's only going to be work for one game this year. I wonder if the fans were whining about tradition back in the early 1900s when the Vols switched from black uniforms with orange piping to orange jerseys, orange leather helmets, and khaki pants.

trub, folks that live in glass houses should not throw stones...ever hear of the "Fulmer Award?"....see ya...

Funny thing is, the so called "Fulmer Award" was created by a Florida blogger and even at that time the Gators had more arrests than UT. That is why it should be the Meyer-Muschamp Trophy not the Fulmer Award.

"But have they? If Vandy takes a step back, Tennessee’s path to a six-win season and bowl eligibility will get considerably easier."

Wow, I never thought I'd live to see the day where 1.) TN's season would be measured as a success with a 6 win season and 2.) We would have to count on Vandy being WORSE than the previous year in order to secure said bowl berth.

Everybody stands at the back of the line sooner or later. It's happened to Alabama, Florida, LSU, etc. Although some of those fans might tend to forget those leaner times as they troll message boards during Star Trek commercial breaks. It still important to keep our current run of bad football in historical perspective. We'll be back. And if our 2014 recruiting class is any indication, it will be sooner rather than later.

Great line ..."as they troll message boards during Star Trek commercial breaks." Pure genius quote of the week. Made me LOL! Thanks!!!

Good Post

It is pretty basic UT Fan does not care if you cheat steal lie or steal as long as you WIN WIN WIN. That is why they love Pearl.

Just read these posts from UT Fans, they speak volumes

Just Saying

I find your comments very ironic. You are either obtuse or hypocritical. The Cats have had 4 major NCAA violations in basketball compared to UT's single violation under Pearl. They then go out and hire a coach who had 38 wins vacated by the NCAA at Memphis for another major violation at that school.

The truth is that if Pearl had not panicked and lied about a stupid BBQ he would still be at UT now. That's on him. As for which school has more integrity (and there is not a lot of integrity in college sports) I will judge by the facts above.

I am not defending it--I said it was an upset. You can cherry pick games to prove a point and I can as well. What I said was that NTSU always played solid football under Hayden Fry. 1975 was his first season and they went 7-4, followed by 7-4, 10-1 and 9-2.

Correction 1975 was their first season as an independent. Two years later they finished #16 in the coaches poll.

yeah, North Texas was really strong that year. they beat West Texas A&M 16-15. we all know how much of a powerhouse WTA&M was that year.WTA&M finished 5-6 but they did have that big win over Drake! North Texas also got beat by Memphis that year. Yeah, Fry was the coach and he certainly out-coached Battle but that is not saying much. Tennessee was pathetic that year under Battle. Do not try to defend it.

we can only hope he trashes Alabama the way he did Tennessee. I know many will say he never had a losing season at UT and that is true. However look at his record from year to year. it was a downward spiral. Doug Dickey left him stellar players to have quick success but once his own recruits started playing the fall began.
I remember getting beat by North Texas State University....at home!!!

I can only hope he does the same thing to Alabama

Yes, and that was the Hayden Fry era at North Texas State. Heard of him?

Was it an upset? Yes, but those NTSU teams of the early to mid-70s were solid football teams. Fry then took the Iowa job and turned a door mat team into a perennial winner.

Seems everyone has forgotten about Coach Battle's remark about the "Gay Street Quarterbacks" when he self destructed at a press conference.....it was a smug and condescending jab at Knoxvillians.....good man, mediocre football coach.

Was he wrong? Having seen from afar the way some East Tennessee fans act when things are not going their way, I don't think he was.

Written on University of Alabama president to recommend hiring of Bill Battle as new athletics director:

Good for Bill Battle! He wasn't given the best treatment by Vol fans (probably was too young to be a head coach) but was always a gentleman and a classy individual. It will be interesting to how he gets along with "He Who Must Not Be Named."

The really stupid thing was naming a street after him in the first place. He was a great player on a great team. We should not immortalize him. Peyton, on the other hand has donated millions to the university. A street name is in order for him. Now again we have mud on our face. These job searches have to be done in silent without the public involved. Again, our crack administration set the University up for bad press. Hart is a real rookie.

I have never liked the idea of naming streets or putting up statues to living persons. Although I can understand making an exception in the case of Manning, Fulmer and Summit.

Chamique Holdsclaw is a perfect example of why it is a bad idea. Tee was a nice player on a championship team, but did that merit a street named after him? Especially with historic players like McEver, Cafego and Lauricella who may have been more worthy.

The truth is that Coach Majors was right when he referred to some Vol fans as the legion of the miserable. Folks can say all they want about how horrible Kiffin was, but trust me, many of you liked the perceived swagger that he had, and would give your right arm to have a coach get up and tweak Saban, Spurrier, Muschamp, Richt and Franklin. If you win, that's great...if you go 7-5, or worse, it's juvenile. Will Butch Jones work out?? I have no idea. I didn't know whether Hugh Freeze would work out at Ole Miss, but that hire has exceeded everything I hoped for, and the players love him....and so do the recruits we are getting....

So true. Looks like Ole Miss did well with Freeze and hopefully Coach Jones will do well at UT.

And for those pointing out Louisville's record against Florida and are trying to say that is why he shouldn't be hired are morons. Look at Louisville's recruiting classes versus Florida's it is hard to beat a team that is in a state full of talent who all they dreamed about since being kids was playing for the Gators. Of course only time will tell if we do hire him if it was a good decision however, the same could be said about any coach they hire. I firmly believe the ppl on here who wouldn't be happy with Strong being the coach are still stuck on Gruden which was never going to happen in the first place. Spot on! That is what I don't like about him. If he would convey information without the sarcasm and actually do some real investigative reporting his articles would be better. Probably too much work when he can just mail it in by spouting off controversial opinions (which he may not really believe) mixed with sarcasm---sort of like Knoxville's own Jason Whitlock.

Written on Agent says Gruden never had interest in Vols' job, calls reports "fantasy":

in response to Rel2400:

Stop reading blogs and listen to official media reports that come from either the University or reputable journalists. Gruden was never mentioned by anyone officially other than fans and bloggers. So you don't get to be upset when your favorite candidate for the job isn't interested.

This is a process managed by a group of professionals. You can rest assured that there would not have been a firing of Dooley without ample resources and capable leaders in place to lead the process.

Based on "official" reports it looks as if Hart made a phone call to see if there was any interest given the ridiculous media and blog reporting. If Gruden was really one of Hart's priorities then they would have spoken.

In order for this process to fully play out the games this weekend need to be played and seasons ended. I would almost bet that no offer would be made to anyone until Hart has officially spoken to a few of the coaches playing this weekend. And you can guarantee that he would not reach out to them during this week of conference championships. On Sunday I would suspect there will be several conversations and maybe a likely decision based on interest level.

With all of that being said...Gruden was never in consideration, neither are half the crazy ideas posted on this site (Fulmer, Manning, Cutcliff, Chief, etc.). He said a coach with head coaching experience that can win in the SEC.

Since everyone else is throwing out a name then I will too...Jimbo Fisher. No announcement until after his game tomorrow and then some time to work on the deal. Probably around Friday of next week there will be an announcement. I have nothing but pure speculation to base my prediction on. I don't know inside boosters, or work for the university with inside information or know a friend of a friend with absolute, concrete facts like some on this site. It's fun to project an idea with some rationale and discuss it. It's crazy to go off half-cocked based on weak information.

Let's just hope it's a solid hire, someone who will keep a few of the Juniors around next year, have an improved recruiting class and take the next step towards relevance in the next few years. NC are great...but I won't base the success of this hire on whether or not we are NC in 3 years. I will base it on whether or not we are relevant in games, compete for championships and return to the glory days of TN football.

Most sensible comment of the day; unfortunately, few will follow your wise words.
