Written on Mike Hamilton defends department's debt practices:

in response to volthrunthru#658770:

RememberWhen is full of something other than facts. Bombast and B.S. do not obscure the fact that Fulmer was on track to have a 2nd good bounceback season, had not Cutcliffe been given the Duke HC job. "Cut" was hired late in football year, and Fulmer had to scramble to find an OC, at a time when no good ones were on the market.

Fulmer was not the problem; he was part of the solution, had people like you done the STFUing; so that those who understood what was going on could continue to fix the problems.

Instead, mouthy ignoramuses emailed new administrators, board members and everybody else a LOT of bad information---and barraged their offices and homes with phone calls.

So for those who do not know that footballs are not spherical, UT football is in the tank...along with everything else...because these malcontents, their bombast & B.S....and timid, anti-athletics new administrators converged to almost destroy everything about UT Athletics.

The fault is with the mal-contents at the time Phillip Fulmer was doing the turn-around. They are to blame for the real problems, because they emboldened the anti-UT, anti-Athletics, anti-Fulmer/Pearl/Delmonico/et-al crowd.

And in so doing, with their chronic witching, whining and complaining to the new administrators and on every message board between here and UCLA; they framed the demise of UT's athletics department.

These people...you included...are to blame. You need to be quiet, sir/maam/mixed and allow better people to fix problems you and those like you caused.

I have no advice for you about your ignorance, which is apalling. Frankly, the scope and intensity of it is quite alarming, as is the fact that you have no idea what you and those like you have done.

Such ignorance among Volunteers is very surprising, considering our University's storied history.

I wish Coach Dooley the best whatever he does next. I don't think he was ready for the big time as a head coach, and he may never be. He did, however, try to build the team in a way that would make the Big Orange Nation proud. It didn't work out, and he was rightfully relieved of his duties. That doesn't make him a terrible person, and I wish our fans would let go of their hatred of him. I have immensely more respect for Derek Dooley than I'll ever have for Lane Kiffin.

Written on Mike Strange: Something is missing ... Vols looking for a closer :

in response to johnlg00:

Some pretty good comments here, considering that we have all seen this movie before. I agree with you that the Vols got beat all too often on the same play. I think I would have told the defender on the screener to step out to at least make Henderson hesitate or change direction. If the main defender is trailing Henderson, which was often the case because of all the off-ball screens he was getting, and the ball screener's defender steps out, you run the risk of the screener rolling toward the basket. However, would you rather have Henderson stepping into another open 3-pointer or a relatively clumsy post player having to catch a tough pass and make an effective move into the lane? It was as likely as any other outcome that the OM post player would fumble the pass, run over a defender, or put up a contested shot. If you fouled him, you would be putting a poor free-throw shooter at the line. I would 100% prefer any of those outcomes, including an uncontested dunk, over giving a hot Henderson even one more open look at a 3-pointer.

**************

Agree. We looked like we had never seen a screen play before, & had no idea how to stop it.

Written on Lady Vols not dwelling on past with Vanderbilt :

I used to have 4th row season tickets for the Vandy women so I am aware of the weird elevated floor. I primarily bought them so I would have great seats for the Lady Vols games. You can not imagine the darts the Vandy fans threw my way. Very entertaining really. IMHO regardless of the cost it is an unfair advantage. I think the competition committee should look at it.

Technically, you are probably correct that he was a walk on in Football. However, he came to U.T. on a basketball scholarship. The General, noticing his size & agility, just plain stole him from the basketball coach.
I believe he also won the Southeastern Conference high jump title while at UT.

Written on No worry against Missouri for Lady Vols, 84-39 :

in response to RLL59:

First, a win is a win and improves the won-lost percentage. But this game really didn't indicate anything, positive or negative. It was more like a scrimmage. After the game, we had the obligatory, but now annoying, comments from the coaches about the Lady Vols letting up after getting the big lead and how the Lady Vols have to play Missouri again on their home court.

Had the Lady Vols been playing one of the top teams, their constant over guarding would have led to easy baskets; their rebounding stats would be significantly lower; many of their shots under the basket would have been blocked. They didn't let up in the second half; they did what any team does when they are way ahead with no chance of losing; they took ill advised shots and were more careless with the ball. They still played hard, just not smart. But this was Missouri, not Baylor.

The Lady Vols have great young talent and are improving with experience. This year will be a good year; but the next few will be better.

in response to FWBVol:

Three of those guys; Mayo, Berry and Foster were all guys and maybe a fourth -- Colquitt were all players that Fulmer recruited in his last five years. At the time Fulmer was fired, UT was set to have a top 10 recruiting class.

I'm not saying it wasn't time for him to go, but I still think giving a guy that won 150 games one more year at his alma mater wouldn't have been too much to ask. There is no way, even if the program had not lived up to the bar Fulmer set earlier, that we would be in as bad of shape as we are now in football.
