Written on Peyton Manning 'looking forward to supporting' Butch Jones:

For some reason I lost interest in professional football years ago. I pretty much watched college or when I could watch a really good high school play. The only time I will watch a professional football game now-a-days is when Peyton Manning is playing on TV. I think the guy not only is one of the best Quarterbacks that I have ever seen but is also one of the classiest. I think we are very fortunate that he chose Tennessee.

Written on Poll: Which position on Tennessee's offense are you most concerned about next season?:

in response to mountainbrook:

I'm much more concerned about the defense.

I think one of the key's will be if we can control the football on offense. If we can win the time of possession we will be able to take a lot of pressure off the defense. Time of possession will be critical. I think that whoever Coach Jones decides to go with at Quarterback will be a very critical choice. I would like to see a Quarterback that can run the football; whoever that may be. But hey, whatever works.

Written on John Adams: Preseason line on UT isn't all bad:

in response to underthehill:

Lack of respect for your opponent is past stupid..and is not practiced by the best of players or coaches..it was one of the early signs Dooley was not head coaching material..along with his art of making excuses..this too is not practiced by the best..I don't see Jones making these mistakes..but it is not unusual for uninformed fans..fact is ..Franklin could have left Vandy for a better job this year if he had chosen to do so..only Franklin and Vandy have information as to his intentions..as for his coaching..I watched his team several times and they are disciplined, play hard, and very well coached..example..the way they wore UT down and was dominating them at the end of the game..Vandy has a much stronger roster this year..Franklin recruited 6 offensive linemen in the top ranked 100 his first year and redshirted them ..he moved one of them to defense..giving Vandy what could be the stongest line play they have ever had..Franklin has planned well ..has an excellent staff and game plans..and I think Jones would say the same..this is the first step to beating the opponent..have enough sense to know what you are up against..

Very good post. I think we have a very good coach in Butch Jones and like you, I also think Franklin is a good coach for Vandy and I am sure they will try everything in their power to hang onto him. I really like coach Jones. He has already got inside me and motivated me. If he can do that to me and thousand's of other fan's he can do that to a recruit. My definition of a great coach is one that can get into a person's mind and motivate them. Anyone can draw play's on a board. Let's just say I am really looking forward to Vandy coming into Knoxville next year.

Written on Sea of crimson in Big Orange country for Nick Saban speech:

Food for thought for Alabama trolls. Butch Jones has the ability to get inside a player and motivate. He already has got into my mind and has motivated me. I think it will take a few years but I think Tennessee is headed in the right direction. Straight at Alabama.

Written on John Adams: Knoxville a big part of Geno Auriemma legacy:

in response to johnlg00:

No question Geno gets more of the best talent on the most regular basis than any other program these days. But it can't be said that he wastes it. His coaching prowess is beyond reasonable dispute. His teams play well and hard nearly every minute of every game. Most of his ex-players seem every bit as respectful and grateful toward him as Pat's do to her. I'll grant you that some aspects of his personality are a taste I have yet to acquire, but he is one of the best there ever was between the lines. So is Pat, and she was first.

I agree with you. But ya know, that's the way I like it. If we play them and beat them it would be a tremendous accomplishment. You better bring your A game to do it and you better be right mentally. That's what Pat was good at, getting her team right mentally. Pat was a tough women that never backed down from anyone and she passed that on to her players. I am hoping Holly will be able to do that with her team but that remains to be seen.

Written on Butch Jones doesn't bite on Saban bait:

in response to GeauxTeamScribe:

This is the same balderdash I heard about Dooley, all last year. Jones was what, another 6th or 7th choice? Only this time you gave a 6th or 7th choice, with a mediocre resume in the minor leagues, 3 million a year. He's so far behind James Franklin he couldn't catch up with a Bugatti Veyron.

In case you've forgotten, you guys ran the Pumpkin and Chavis off, and yet still want to talk like contenders. You're not. That brilliant move has rendered you the Minnesota of the SEC, a team that was once a power, but is now just a faded glory never to return. A school that talks like Al., Fl. and Auburn, but has a losing record to all of them and will have a losing record to Ga. in two more years.

Now, are you getting it? Franklin is on the rise and all you can talk about is the glory of Neyland and the glory years of a Fulmer that you yourselves showed the door. Too funny!

I agree with you about Franklin, he is a very good coach. He probably is the best coach Vandy's ever had. I happen to think Mr. Jones is a very good coach also. Let's just say I am really looking forward to when we play Vandy. It will undoubtedly be a great game.

Written on Butch Jones doesn't bite on Saban bait:

in response to GeauxTeamScribe:

All I heard, last year, was how Dooley was going to make an arrogant James Franklin eat his words, en route to a 9-3 or 10-2 UT season. Boy he sure did, didn't he? There are three top coaches in the SEC, Saban (who does everything himself, no assistants required), Spurrier, and Franklin. Only one of them is young and African American (a huge plus, like it or not).

Your post is completely irrelevant. Last year was last year under a different coach and this year is this year with Butch Jones. I think Butch Jones has a very good chance too do very well at Tennessee. If he coaches his team like his assistants are organized on the sidelines (Orange & White game) he will be very successful. All the coaches seemed to know exactly what they were doing and seemed to work very well together.

Written on Lady Vols swept in championship series, Oklahoma wins national title, 4-0:

I think these kids are first class all the way. They fought their hearts out and they came up short. The best thing the coaches can do is find out why they came up short and get it corrected so that they can win an NC the next time they get here. If it was me I would want honest opinions from everyone that I thought highly of. Congratulations Lady Vol's on a great season.

Written on Lady Vols give up three-run lead in 11th, fall to Oklahoma in 12th in Game 1:

The first game is over so let's just "flush it" to quote Raven. The only thing that matters now is what we do from now on. One positive thing that came out of that first game is we know now that we can play with Oklahoma and we can beat them if we go out there and execute. Before the game we did not know if we could play with them or not. Go Lady Vol's.

Written on Two runs and two Renfroes get Tennessee down to the final two in WCWS :

Congratulations to the Lady Vol's on getting to the Championship round. This is something you can take with you the rest of your live's. I think they have a great chance against Oklahoma if our pitching holds up and Raven Chavanne can get on base throughout the game and they can create some havoc behind her. Win or lose I think the Lady Vol's are the best.

Written on Lady Vols taking on Texas; Oklahoma to face Washington:

Tennessee is going to have to come out hitting the ball if it want's to win anymore games in the tournament. Chavanne, Dotson, Gibson, and Shipman have been much too quiet. They need to come out and show everyone what they got.

Written on John Adams: Recruiting will condition Lady Vols for basketball success:

I think ya all make good points (no trolls in here yet). I think with the players coming in it makes for a very exciting season for next year. Holly is going to have to be the one that decides who goes where. The choices that she make's will play a big part as to how successful the team will be. With Russell coming in it will definitely ad more fire power to the offense and defense. With Carter healthy next year she could work herself into the starting lineup. I think Holly will definitely have some tough choices. But ya know what, that's what life is all about; making tough choices. I think the more input Holly has the easier it will be to make the best choice. It might be something that she never thought of.

Written on Tory Lewis hits game-winning single in 7th to lift Lady Vols, 1-0:

I thought Hammond really did a great job of base running and Lewis did a great job of clutch hitting, which is something that the Lady Vol's lacked the whole game. What can you say about Ellen Renfroe; I thought she was just fantastic. These girls are nothing but first class (blue chip) all the way. I wish them nothing but the best.

Written on Lady Vols knock off No. 2 seed Florida; Washington next:

When the Gators scored two runs in the fifth to make it 3-2, I thought now we are going to find out what the Lady Vol's are made of. Well I guess we all found out. I thought the Lady Vol's answered the challenge very well. I thought Ellen pitched well, keeping a very good hitting Florida team off balance the whole game. But I was mostly impressed with the way the girls hit the ball in the sixth.

Written on Lady Vols, Gators know the drill:

With three all-Americans on the team it seems to me that Weekly just needs to get the Lady Vol's in the right frame of mind and let that three just hit away and play their game. I think the Lady Vol's have as good a chance as anyone in the tournament.

Written on John Adams: Hurd's commitment makes Beech a Tennessee team:

For my money the greatest running back in NFL History was Jim Brown. He was 6'2" 232 lbs. He would simply run right over you or out run you. I have never seen a running back (in my opinion) that could measure up to him. Maybe the Vols have one coming in next year.

Written on Bashaara Graves, Jordan Reynolds to take part in U19 trials :

in response to snowpeapod#263184:

If Reynolds makes the team I hope we get to see some video replay of parts of the games. I think Lady Vol fans will be impressed with her.We know what Bashaara can do and I think most Lady Vol fans will be pleasantly surprised.

From what I have been reading about Reynolds she could be a real sleeper. Russell seems to think allot of her. I hope she makes the team and get's allot of playing time. It would be a great experience for her. One thing she has going for her is she can play point or slashing off guard position.

Written on Bashaara Graves, Jordan Reynolds to take part in U19 trials :

I will be very interested to see who makes the team and then who starts.

Written on Holly Warlick, Brian Pensky recommended firing of strength coach Heather Mason:

in response to Benionsopinion:

As I follow some parts of the continuing conversation, all of which are interesting and thought provoking, some questions do come up.If Dave Hart is a Bama plant to destroy Tennessee's athletic program, why was he needed?Mike Hamilton put today's situation in motion. Why are very few people commenting on the status of the strength and conditioning for the Lady Vols? For the last several years, our basketball Lady Vols in particular have been outfought, out hustled, and outrun by many opponents as ,seemingly a result of poor conditioning. Also why should a coach not want a strength and conditioning coach that fits her wants? Personally speaking,it seems to me that a new strength and conditioning coach is needed.

I agree with you about the preseason conditioning program. I think we have had a lot of injuries over the last five years compared to Uconn, Notre Dame, Stanford, or Baylor. I know they have had a few injuries but not near as many as we have. I also think you can improve an athletes speed and quickness with a great program and you can cut down on injuries also. I have to go along with Holly on this one. I think she is on the right track.

Written on Johnny Majors thinks UT will be more disciplined under Butch Jones:

in response to underthehill:

I think Butch Jones understands the value of Johnny Majors expressing his views about what he has observed..I know I do..the Majors family..not just Johnny..are a huge part of the history of UT football..

I will never forget the 1985 team that beat Miami and Michael Irvin in the 1986 Sugar Bowl. I enjoyed watching that game as much or more as I enjoyed watching the Vols win the National Championship in 1998. I will never forget Jeff Powell's 60 yard run and what Frank Broyles said in describing it. "He just ran right by a man that has world class track speed". Also don't forget the miracle at South Bend.

Written on Parallel lines in two lawsuits against Tennessee:

I am really glad to see that Holly will have a big impact on hiring Mason's replacement. I thought there were way too many injuries over the last five year's compared to Uconn, Baylor, Notre Dame, and Stanford. It look's to me like Hart and Holly are on the same page.

Written on UT athletic director Hart gets one-year extension, $50K bonus:

in response to Ironcity:

Joan ruled herself out. We all love Pat but she was in no shape to coach and would have damaged her legacy and allowed another program to tumble to depths unknown in UT history. Additionally Hart has made the unpopular decisions that needed to be made to get this program solvent once again. Lets face it, Dave Hart came into a 6 alarm fire and anyone who thinks it was going to be easy to turn this around was crazy.

I do agree with a previous poster though and wonder why its necessary to extend a contract that is in force for another 5 years? I would like to see the turn before I go crazy and extend the AD.

I agree with your whole post but only have a comment on your last paragraph. I don't understand the extension either. To me Hart is just doing his job. We don't even know how Butch Jones will work out yet. I guess I am not used to money "loosely" being thrown around like that, especially since we were supposed to be hurting for money.

Written on Heather Mason relieved of duties as UT's associate strength and conditioning coach:

We have had a lot of injuries over the last five years and allot of them could be traced to the preseason conditioning program. Some injuries your going to have regardless but I thought we had a lot of injuries compared to Uconn, Stanford, Baylor, or Notre Dame. I thought it was a good move by Dave Hart.

Written on Grilled by Jon Gruden, UT's Tyler Bray says he needs to improve preparation in NFL:

All I know is what's past is past and what's now is now. I think Bray made a big mistake leaving early for the draft; he obviously did not buy into what coach Jones was going to expect. But you know that's what life is all about, making choices and then making that choice pay off. I think a year under Butch Jones would have paid off big time for him. I wish him nothing but the best.

Written on Vols quarterbacks must lead:

I really like what coach Jones is doing. In my opinion it will be just a question of time and he will have this team turned around. I really like the way this guy thinks. I am really looking forward to watching them play next year. If I was a player I would be worried that I might be left out of something rather than going to the beach or throwing bear bottles at cars.

Written on Mike Strange: For Vol fans, optimism rules in April:

I thought the defense looked much improved over last year. That interception looked big time to me. I thought the quarterback's got harassed and didn't get time to throw on a lot of plays. I like what I see. I think Coach Jones has got us headed in the right direction.

Written on Kamiko Williams picked in second round of WNBA draft:

When the going got tough Miko got going. I don't think we would have won the SEC without her. I think she is a very talented basketball player whom I will miss allot next year. It was a lot of fun watching her play.

Written on Auriemma ties Summitt with 8th title as UConn crushes Louisville, 93-60:

Ya know I don't think we are as far off as some people think we are (Mike). One key player can make a huge difference in basketball because there are only five players. You take Dolson out of the Uconn lineup and you don't have near the rebounding and defense. If Lewis is not in there for Uconn I wonder how often Stewart gets open. You also have to remember that Uconn has not had the injuries that Tennessee has had in the last five years. Maybe we should look into a better pre season conditioning program; it wouldn't hurt to look at it. As far as Holly is concerned, maybe she could be a little tougher. Pat was tough because she played against her brothers so she new what it took to beat a man. Also she was very strong for a women as she could throw a 100 pound sack of feed over her shoulder and pick up a 60 pound bag of dog food with the other arm. I like Holly as I think she can coach the game, I just think she needs to look into the mental aspect of the game a little more. Maybe she needs to start calling her team guys (Geno calls his players guys). Like I said I don't think we are far off at all. One key player and a few adjustments and we will be right there.

Written on Holly Warlick receives Maggie Dixon award for rookie coaches:

in response to kazoo:

I too was appalled at our panicky play against Louisville--from the very start of the game. NO, i don't think we should have been apprehensive--and it is the coaches job to get rid of any apprehension. Did Louisville have "jitters" against Baylor? No, they had the guts and the toughness we've lost--Baylor thumped us four straight and our nervous shooters were rather sad in every one of those losses (under 30 percent shooting in each of those games, I believe). We've got 8 national titles and Louisville has ZIPPO. Who should have the jitters? Does Connecticut come out and play "jittery?" No, they come out and put the hammer down.

So I find much of this fan talk about plucky little Tennessee getting all the way to the Elite Eight a bit depressing--evidence of how far we've fallen. We've got a bench full of top 20 recruits. Louisville didn't. I respect Holly, but forgive me for not quite buying all this blather about she took a sad, pathetic group of waifs--athletic castoffs--and somehow, against all odds, beat oral roberts, creighton and oklahoma (a team TRULY battered by injuries). Let's get real.

There is a difference between "bashing" and good constructive criticism. I thought your post was good constructive criticism.

Written on Lady Vols approach offseason with urgency, use time as season in itself:

in response to johnlg00:

We all ought to know that verbal committments are only worth the paper they are printed on, so I guess it could be possible Russell could be rethinking her committment to UT, but her attendance at the Final Four isn't necessarily evidence of that. It may just be a perk for being named HS Player of the Year. I'm pretty sure it would be a MAJOR NCAA violation for Louisville to pay for her to be there. I'll need more evidence than the fact that she was at the Final Four to doubt her committment right now.

I believe all three Tennessee recruits have signed.

Written on Lady Vols approach offseason with urgency, use time as season in itself:

in response to volfan2002:

The coaches get it they know that all of our players need to be mentally tougher and learn to play great defense. We have the talent to win the National title next season but it will only happen if all of our players become better on defense and mentally tough for a full 40 minutes.

I agree with you and John both. You both make very good points. As to the mental part of it, if the Lady Vols can't play their best in the big games then you have to ask yourself way am I wasting my time and the coaches time playing this game at all.

Written on John Adams: Louisville taught UT a big-game lesson :

in response to rogatl2002#222395:

You know I have thought before that UT fans were really too rough on you Adams but your columns today and yesterday are really pieces of trash. They are not insightful in any way. UT deserves better. All you do it state obvious things that we can see for ourself....instead of adding to our understanding by pointing out things your readers might not see for themselves. This column is worthy of a first year journalism student writing for the Daily Beacon...not the senior sportswriter for a major city newspaper.

I thought Adams told it pretty much like it was. Some people can handle the truth and some people can't.

Written on End to Lady Vols' season doesn't feel good:

I will agree with some of the poster's that Ariel Massengale has a long way to go on the defensive end. She needs to work allot on her defense and her shooting during the summer. But I think she does a good job of finding the open player. I think she is a big reason why the offense is as good as it is. Carter coming back next year and pushing her will be good for her. We have a very good player coming in (Tucker) who I think will push Simmon's big time. She can shoot the "3" and can play very good defense. If Simmon's can't play her best basketball in the big game's then she is wasting her time and the coach's time for that's what it is all about; doing all this work so you can do well when it count's most. Also don't forget the Reynolds girl from what I hear she is not too shabby. It is going to be interesting to see how this all play's out. I would advise Simmons and Ariel to get it in gear or they just might be sitting on the bench next year.

Written on Louisville stops Lady Vols' run to Final Four, 86-78:

in response to JimmyJoe:

What RUN? Had the opportunity of a lifetime... And didn't take advantage. Big time players step up in these situations.....the Lady Vols are a nice little team... And had a nice little season... They have a nice little coach... Nothing big time about this program anymore... This may be as close as we ever get to the Final Four again.

I agree with you they did blow a great opportunity. But I think the Lady Vols are lacking a true leader out there. They don't seem to have that go to player that can stop another teams runs. We haven't had a true leader on this team since Parker left. We may have one coming in next year however. I am very impressed with Russell and Tucker but I don't know much about the Reynolds girl; she may be a sleeper. I have a strong hunch that the leader that we are looking for will be one of those three.

Written on John Adams: Another turnaround leaves Lady Vols one game from Final Four:

I am looking forward to watching the game. I think it is a tremendous oppertunity for the Lady Vols.

Written on Lady Vols adjust their NCAA focus to Louisville:

I love these kids and I believe they will do well. Like I have said before, I started to believe when they went down to Miami and beat them good, on their own court. Just remember your not in this alone your in this together as "one"; you also have roughly 40,000 fans pulling for you every step of the way. Go out there and have fun and don't worry about whether you will make a shot or not because Izzy has you covered. I wish you the best.

Written on John Adams: Kamiko Williams' value increases as UT advances:

John Adams Quote:
In fact, Williams should have had an opportunity to make more plays in the second half during which she took only one shot.
But the ball kept going to Simmons as if she were at the top of her game. She followed a 1-for-7 first half by missing all eight second-half shots, including a layup.

I think Adams makes a good point. Get the ball to the player that is hot. After a one for seven first half by Simmons and the way Williams was playing you have to get it to her. Maybe in the next game Simmons will have the hot hand.

Written on Lady Vols feeling at home in regional, advance to play Louisville:

I think the Lady Vols are peaking at the right time. I thought this game was one of the best games that they played all year. I thought their offense looked really good; they got allot of open looks and hit them. I also thought their defense looked better than I have seen it all year. I really enjoyed watching them play. They seemed to play as "one" and with a lot of "True Grit". I thought Holly and her staff did a great job preparing them and I think she has the team on the right track. I wish them nothing but the best against Louisville.

Written on Lady Vols will find out how well their game travels :

I started to believe in this team when they went down to Georgia Tech and then went to Miami and beat them both on their home court. To me that was impressive especially since Miami had a long winning streak going on their home court. Then when I saw them dismantle North Carolina I really thought too myself, this team has something special. And last but not least they won the SEC championship despite having three key injuries. I love this team and I think that if they stay close together and play smart as "one", I believe that they can have a lot of fun and could accomplish something special. Just remember that you are Tennessee and that you are as good as anyone out there. I wish you all the best.

Written on The play of which Lady Vol is most important in order to make an NCAA tournament run?:

I would say every team the Lady Vols play will be focusing on Simmons and Izzy. It might come down to how smart they are. If you don't have a good shot get it to someone that has. Or it may come down to how well the team can create open looks. They will win or lose on how well the team can create open looks and how well they can hit them; regardless who it is. Also they will have to play great defense like they did in their last game.

Written on Creighton taking confidence from Missouri's upset of Lady Vols in February :

We can either fold our tents or we can figure out how we are going to beat Baylor. Someone needs to decide.

I think we need to figure out how we are going to beat Oral Roberts & Syracuse rather than even thinking about Baylor. Syracuse finished 24-7 and finished third in the big East losing to Notre Dame by 11 at Notre Dame and to Uconn 64-51 in their last game. Syracuse has a very good team.

Written on Butch Jones says Vols are on run of 'momentum':

in response to notfunanymore:

You have got to be kidding me?? A few practices and Jones is already spewing out ridiculous comments. The players should be full of momentum and enthusiasm. Jones' quote sounds awfully similar to Dooley's "Not going to have Tennessee to push around anymore." I am sure the college football world is very concerned. More like laughing their arses off. Once again, UT has hired a coach that will keep the football program under "laughing stock" status.

I would not bet on that if I were you because I think that you will lose. I have been around the block a few times and I know a workaholic when I see one. Any workaholic that I have ever seen has been very successful. There are exceptions to the rule but I think Butch Jones is going to be very hard to beat. Anyone that loves what he is doing as much as he does I don't think it is smart to bet against him.

Written on Texas A&M takes one away from Lady Vols in final minute, 66-62:

in response to jt45:

Thats a pretty good assessment of some of the weaknesses this team has had. The Lady Vols have the talent but fail to use the pass as effectively as say a ND or stanford team usually does. ND has the best passing game ive seen from any team in a long time. Its starts at the point position and finds holes in defenses without fail, time and again. For quite some time I have hoped the LVs would get a guard who can run a good passing game like NDs. My hope is that carter returns next year with the loaded lineup they have and improve the passing and defense. Its a bit frustrating to see the top tier teams using set play offenses with outstanding passing while we seem to be lacking in those areas and relying on sheer talent. The LVs would be almost unstoppable if they would practice and implement a passing game like NDs.

Good Point

in response to LVFL90:

Do not criticize Simmons. She was really well covered all day and they didn't expect the shooting skill of Spani. Frankly, I've never seen her like that. Everyone gave it their all this season and I'm very proud of them. Simmons is just great and is such a competitor. We really needed a big, true post player as Kelsey Bone is BIG. Injuries, Freshmen, and everything, it's been a great season and now onto the NCAA tournament. Can't wait to see how this terrific group of young ladies will entertain us next. Go Lady Vols!!

When Simmons is having a off day shooting she needs to be looking for the player that is shooting the ball well and not trying to force things herself. She needs to play smarter. She needs to realize that even if she does not score a lot of points she can do things to get other players open for the good shot. If you are their main focus get the ball to someone that is hot or open. She seems to think that she has to score a lot of points every game she plays in or she doesn't think she plays well. She really needs to just let the game come to her and go from there. Once Simmons get's a good understanding of how the game is played I think she will be one of the best.

Written on Texas A&M takes one away from Lady Vols in final minute, 66-62:
