My inital thought when this hit the media: WTH!?!?

I believe my inital thought was wrong. If such a well-respected coach such as Keady gives him a ringing endorsement, then that goes a long way for me. Keady didn't recruit/play chumps and didn't hire incompetents as assistants.

Welcome aboard, Coach Martin. GO BIG ORANGE!! VFL!!!

on the court?? sure. fan support?? sure. Boosters, clout, political connections in the NCAA?? Not so much.

As I think of this:
millions of dollars will disappear from UT in ticket sales, concessions, and other ancillary sales. We are willing to take that hit for a bbq, annoying phone calls, and a coach's brain-fart.

This tells me more is going on than what has been released. The upshot?? We are headed to Ole Miss status...pretty much irrelevant in men's sports.

Your constant "female-dog" act is old. Tell me, Geraldo. What else is there that is not being released? Go on. Open the Capone door and let us know.

I think you go a bit far in your criticism, 99. Some can't transition from the pros to the college game and vice versa. I think that Chuck is more in tune with the pro aspect. Not to say that he doesn't love his alma mater. It is more than safe to say he does. It just seems that Chuck Smith loves being Chuck Smith.

6) well, #6 will likely come in June, and it may trump 1-5. I hope not. But let's not act as if the Pearl story is over. This messed up soap opera still has a few episodes to playout, unfortunately in the hands of the NCAA review panel.

I just don't think Pearl survives this. I am afraid that the program will be in shambles for a couple of years due to NCAA sanctions.
I am a Pearl fan but I just can't see how he's the coach next season.

Unethical conduct gets a prominent place in the NCAA manual, on page 49 of the 434-page behemoth. The fourth prong on the no-no list for unethical conduct reads, “Knowingly furnishing or knowingly influencing others to furnish the NCAA or the individual’s institution false or misleading information,’’ which is exactly what the NCAA says Pearl is guilty of.

I will be shocked if Pearl doesn't get a show cause (1 yr).

Hubbs said this morning that he doesn't think Pearl is going anywhere.
I can't disagree with him more.
I think the decision has been made and I think that Pearl himself has made it. I believe that Pearl is going to resign after the season. I don't have any inside information or anything. It's just my opinion.

Written on Twelve-member committee will decide punishment for UT :

in response to iowavol:

Agree with Brett for the most part - except I don't want Bruce gone. If Bruce was guilty of fixing grades, or providing extra benefits like 200,000 for a player, or some of things Calhoun or Pitino or having a long history of signing thugs, I'd say enough. But that is not his track record. His record is being straight up, signing the right kids, developing young men and making tough decisions like kicking your star off the team when the crime is egregious enough. I've seen him speak a couple of times at benefits and I believe him to be a good ambassador of our school. This is an embarrassment no doubt, but one we can recover from if...

For allowing (...you can come if want...) 2 recruits on unofficial visits to his backyard to hang out with the team and eat a hamburger and have a glass of lemonade.. is this really a firing crime? I think most in the profession would like to see this not a violation - think about it, you didn't wine and dine them, you didn't do anything special for their visit. The NCAA needs to really look at what are they trying to enforce.

For excessive contact with recruits, someone suggested that the number of 1 minutes calls - the lowest level recordable, could have been 5 second and no contact - would have dropped the total contacts below the allowable number. I suggest that contacting a player too many times is barely a misdemeanor.

For lying/misleading investigators is another thing all together and serious. For coming clean on your own about misleading those investigators is worth something. Some will say it would be better for Pearl if never came clean and stuck to his story. I say, good for Pearl for clearing his conscience and telling the truth - it definitely comes with a cost - 8 game suspension and $1.5 million dollars.

The penalty has been paid.

The reason I think Coach Pearl should (and will) resign is for the future of the program.
If he remains until after the final decision is made, likely late July-early August, and he is handed a two year ban, he will have to be fired. We would then be looking for a coach 8-9 weeks out from the beginning of the regular season. There would be no way to get a coach at that junction.
I hate that Coach has put himself and the University in this position. We owe him a debt of graditude for bringing the program back from obscurity. HE owes it to us to correct this in an honorable way.
And cue the Pearl haters (aka jilted stalkers)....

Written on Mark Wiedmer: Four days that could end Pearl's UT career:

in response to hallsguy:

I like CBP,but if these allegations are true then he needs to go.I do understand the NCAA rulebook is about as difficult to interpret as the tax code. However, the problem is the lying afterwards. Todays college basketball scene is so highly competitive and likely every coach bends the rules, some more than others. When you get to the top, like a Coach K or a Dean Smith, Geno,or Pat Summit, the players come to you and it is easier to recruit honestly.Coach Cal will be run out of Kentucky sometime (maybe sooner than later). Calhoun got off light.
Kiffin and Orgeron make an art and science out of skirting the fine line. But nobody ever said they lied.
Hamilton needs to go,probably more. He hired these guys and essentially condoned what they did. It's called lack of institutional control. He let the coaches run the show.
CBP will have no trouble finding a job. He's an excellent coach.
Wish we could have some Derek Dooley's coaching basketball.

"Wish we could have some Derek Dooley's coaching basketball".

I believe we do right here in Nashville. If Pearl is gone after this season (which I think he will be) the University should take a serious run at Rick Byrd at Belmont.

Written on John Adams: Experience needed for this crisis :

in response to iLOVEtheVOLS:

I believe there are several moves that could be made by UT brass and they need to be made pronto. One, move Derek Dooley from football coach to AD. He was AD/head football coach at Louisiana Tech before he came to UT, plus he has a law degree, and he's squeaky clean. Next, hire Jeff Fisher to replace Dooley as football coach. Next, as much as it pains me to say this, let Pearl go. In his place, bring in the bb coach from Belmont. It's to time to clean house folks.

Jeff Fisher? Hell no. The state of TN has had its fill of The Mustache.

Dooley to AD? Are you on crack?

Rick Byrd? Now there's a move I like if Pearl is gone.

But there's a big difference in individual training and unit cohesion. Maybe CS didn't like the work schedule or just didn't get along with his fellow coaches. Whatever the case I would like to thank CS for contributing to his alma mater and helping CDD in rebuilding the program.
