in response to 9willbesofine: My favorite Peyton story is the year Sports Illustrated sent a crew to Gainesville to do a cover story on Peyton and the vawls. 62 points later there's Danny boy sitting pretty on that cover. Peyton is a great NFL QB and a great person. In college he was good. Just not Wuerffel good. 4 SEC titles. a National Title and a Heisman says it all. Good job Peyton. Too bad you never beat Florida. Sincerely, Charles Woodson

Charles - We're all anxiously awaiting yours and Danny Boy's next TV commercial. I guess you guys turned down Buick, Gatorade and Sportscenter and they all had to settle for Peyto
Let's start with winning the games that we should win and being competitive in the others. Being a winner (Jones) goes a long way in the players thinking they can win. Dooley and his teams expected to lose - that's all Dooley knew. A little confidence makes a huge difference.
All we need is the right coach and a couple of good recruiting years. Hopefully Jones is the right coach.
Maze is walking the walk when it comes to being a VFL. Nice job.
Tonight is an important game - win and we will 1) convince ourselves that we can beat OU and 2) put some doubt in their minds. So let's hammer out a win tonight and put all of the pressure on the Soonerettes. Go LVs!!
I'm not expecting much this year as far as wins, but if these guys are good coaches, we should see good adjustments within the game and from game to game. I do expect a much better team at the end of the year compared to the beginning. If we can see the progress, the 5-star recruits will want to be part of the Vols return to the elite.

Who is Johnny Majors?
Let's see...HOF player, HOF coach, National Coach of the Year, Heisman Runner-Up, National Championship, SEC champion, Coached a Heisman winner, Street named after him on campus, Jersey hanging in Neyland...Thanks for asking - which of these can you claim?
When the going got tough in the SEC, Bray disappeared. He wasn't worth any team giving up a draft choice, but at least he's getting a chance to prove himself. Unfortunately, the competition is now much tougher.
Off topic but BYU beat Mercer by 19 in Provo in front of 13,000 fans last week. I'd say BYU wanted to be there and definitely took care of business. Why couldn't we have done that?
I really hope CCM figures out why his teams get off to such a slow start. He needs to do something different to get the team playing at a high level in NOVEMBER, not middle of March. Stay off the bubble!
Question - Do coaches at this level even try to get better at coaching or do they just keep doing what they do??
I was just a kid but can remember Bobby Denton say "that's your starting line-ups for the University of Tennessee Volunteers, coached by Bill Bat-tlllllle". Loved his orange jacket with the little Vol helmet on the pocket.
Our guys have the slowest feet in D1. Any player drives right past any of them. Where's this toughnosed defense that was supposed to be Martin's trademark? This team doesn't do anything very well, except maybe rebounding. Painful to watch. Glad we've pulled the plug on this season.
in response to emailnodata: Anybody else pretty happy for Mercer?? I've been a UT fan since I was 6, and grew up on John Ward.....but these boys did not want to play, and Mercer did.

Just like last year against MTSU. Why do we even accept the NIT bids?
Painful to watch.
I remember watching some of those practice videos from Dooley's staff and they were sad. There was also an ESPNU All Access show. Players were going through the motions and coaches either yelling at them or patting them on the back. I never saw any coach actually show a player anything regarding technique. Glad to see these coaches are providing some instruction!
I'll withhold my laughing at KY until I see that the Vols are more interested in showing up for the NIT than KY was. We laid an egg last year at home against MTSU after missing out on the NCAAs.
C'mon CCM - You are disappointed that we're not one of the top 68 teams? Jeez, we only had 35 games to prove it - and didn't - even though the SEC was down this year. Can we lower the bar any more? There is no reason we can't be a Top 15 team year in and year out. Perhaps your style of basketball isn't getting it done, after 2 years of the same results.
I was talking to a UK fan and he said the Wildcats should be called the Kentucky Possums, bacause they keep getting killed on the road.
I was a freshman at King College in Bristol and our long time basketball coach Al Nida invited Ellis to come to basketball camp at King. Nida was a stickler for fundamentals so he told us he wanted to see if Ellis had good shooting form. As you all know, Ellis kind of shot the ball from his forehead instead of over his head like Nida liked to see.
So Ellis strolls into the gym, picks up a ball and nails 4 straight shots from above the key. Nida turns to us and says "Yeah, it looks pretty good."
No one could stop King or Ellis. Grunfeld, Lofton and Houston were more steaky.
My top 5 Vols:
1. King2. Ellis3. Grunfeld4. Lofton5. Houston
It's only weird if it doesn't work.
I guess real coaches are kinda busy on signing day.
When your offense is built around passing the ball around the perimeter until the shot clock is running out and then brick up a 3, you're not gonna win.
If we win 9 games next year, including 5 in the SEC and a bowl game, we'll be giddy too. Let's give them some credit. Dooley would still have a job is he would've acheived this in 2012.
They should re-name it the Chick-Phil-A Bowl.
This guy has at least been a winner everywhere he has been, even if it's at lower levels. That's something Kiffin and Dooley didn't have when they walked in. I like that he is confident in his ability to win if you follow his approach. There's a reason why we still have Neyland's Maxims 70 years later - blocking, tackling, kicking game and turnovers define the winners and the losers - even in the SEC. So let's see what this guy can do. Hopefully he's a good enough recruiter to get some good players in here to see what kind of a gameday coach he is in 2013.
Was this guy the older brother in Home Alone?
Let's chill out and see what Hart does before we panic. He has publicly stated this is a critical hire for the program and he has to get it right. He just lived through the Dooley mistake so I doubt he will recreate that scenario. There are other folks out there that are qualified (NFL coordinators, etc.). The media is creating this sky is falling scenario but Hart never said this was gonna happen quickly. I'd take Fulmer over another Dooley any day - I'm sure he's realized where he lost control/focus around 2003 and can keep that from happening again. I also admit I was all for his ousting because we should be winning 10 a year. Still should be. Petrino is my first choice.
Hire Petrino. We know he can win in the SEC and everybody loves a winner. Throw in a lifetime membership to the Mouse's Ear. Spin it as everyone deserves (another) 2nd chance. Our choices are running out and everyone else looks like Dooley.
Hart said this was a critical hire and we needed someone who had won or could win in the SEC. Was hoping for a more experienced SEC or NFL guy. We need a good balance of offense and defense. Just b/c our defense was terrible doesn't mean we should hire a DC as head coach so I hope we're not trading 51-44 score losses for 12-10 score losses.
Hiring an NFL coordinator seems to be working for Penn St with O'Brien. Are there any others out there looking for a HC job? I'm just not seeing many premiere candidates with the names being tossed around. Hart said he wanted someone who could win in the SEC. Don't think that's Gundy.
Starting to lean toward Petrino as the best coaches seem to be falling out of contention. The fallen who end up winning seem to always be forgiven. Nobody cares that Saban said he wasn't leaving Miami. Michael Vick, Tiger Woods. As long as they're winning, no one seems to care what they've done. Urban Meyer hem-hawed around at Florida but now he's the best thing to ever happen to Ohio St. Petrino, Pearl and Tressel will end up winning somewhere and I predict all will be forgotten. In the end, it really is all about winning, not how you do it. Just ask Dooley.
I guess after ND beats Kiffin, his dream will be over.
I hope UT has learned from this mistake and makes a much better choice this time around. Can't learn on the job in the SEC. Still think we can win quicker than the experts think with the right coaches.
Seriously, all we need are some good coaches. Our players are as big and fast as most teams, they just haven't been taught to execute. We would've won at least 9 with a Saban or Spurrier this year. We'll be back but not until we get some real coaches.
What's Bill Battle doing these days? Ray Goff? Jim Donnan?
Seriously, why would these guys play hard for Dooley? I'm sure they've figured out by now he's not teaching them anything - except how to find a way to lose every game. The best thing that could happen to them is a new coach. Heck, even the Zooker is a better option.
This coaching staff has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to retain their jobs next year. Their best year was their first one when we were supposedly rock bottom. Then a losing season with a loss to Ky. Now a blow-out loss at Vandy and 0 SEC wins. The high school coaches at Oak Ridge or Dobyns-Bennett would be a huge improvement.
This is rock bottom. What a train wreck. Could we have hired a WORSE coach??? This guy knows nothing about football.
Down by 11 at half. Ugly game so far.

Are you suggesting we request the NCAA death penalty as our best alternative? Hmmmm...it's simple, devious and would frustrate our rivals not to be able to "kick us around anymore". Not bad! That'll show 'em!!

Now it all makes sense - Hamilton asked for young Mr. Howell to come and coach but they sent us Gilligan.
Does anybody think Dooley was told by Hart that he was done at the end of the year so Dooley didn't try to win today?
"Boy, was I wrong." - Barbara Dooley
Let's see...we have a better chance letting the other team start at the 25 against our pathetic defense than trying go gain 25-30 yards with Bray and kick a field goal. Dooley said b/c the first 2 plays didn't work out, he didn't have any confidence in gaining a first down and we've have to punt and give them friggin' 10 seconds to score!! Worst coach in America, at any level. This guy can snatch defeat from the hands of victory in every big game. 0 for Top 25.
in response to BIVOLAR_BEARE: And why would he leave a program like A&M to coach at UT? At best it's a lateral move, and besides he's all set up at A&M to really compete..The UT job needs some rebuilding especially on defense.

I look for A&M to dominate in a couple of years in that fertile recruiting ground and now being in the SEC. Great move on their part.
The only way to stop Bray, Hunter and Patterson is to have Dooley on their sideline. Train wreck.
in response to RememberWhen: well that's yet to be determined....what he REALLY is counting on is that they'll actually do a little better and he can claim his input was the key ingredient in the rescue....thus saving his job....lawd forbid!

If we hold Mizzou, Vandy and Ky to 38 points each, he can claim improvement!
in response to RememberWhen: isn't this the same guy that just a few days ago said "I'm not a defensive guy...."???? Wow, his input should be earth shattering!

He finally realized he couldn't make it any worse.
Did you guys see Dooley's post game interview at utsports.com? He said the football purists are rolling over in their graves and he basically doesn't know what to do with this defense.
