"...Wendel Davis has an injured hand after a non-injury accident Tuesday that was followed by Davis dismounting from his motor scooter..."
Arkansas is definitely following NCAA rules - the guy is riding a motor scooter!
[Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said Tuesday night in a statement released through the university that he was aware of the incident, and would act appropriately once he had "all of the facts regarding the situation."]
I guess "by acting appropriately" Petrino is going to drive his lemon to work instead of the good car. That way if any of his players get mad at him, they can take it out on the car. I wonder what kind of nickname this guy will get?

I hate these stories, but that's not all. Check this link:

"... when they put the pads and helmet on turn into screaming, raging monsters who tear the opponent limb from limb!"
GerryOP Now that's football talk right there! Maybe we need to send you in for the pregame speech.

(6:07 GerryOP)...Ditto to you! Time to go eat.

GerryOP...Basically, I am saying that we are being honest, and others...maybe are not. If you take a sampling of eight-five students at UT(equals the number of available football scholarships), how many would pass enough course hours to be "eligible" for a bowl game? I would guess not all of them. So, it stands to reason that not all football players would be eligible either - no matter how much help is offered. I am actually "glad" that some players(especially starters) are ineligible because it shows that we are following the rules - and would reflect what would happen in the student body. I am just wondering how other schools in our situation are "beating the odds" when it comes to players being eligible for bowl games. I read this in an article somewhere...if I can find the link I'll post it. Gotta run!
Also, I'd be worried if I was pulling for a school w/ no suspensions for bowl games. Either their support system is exceptional, they have a high team IQ, or they are not telling the truth.

However, (in the advisor's defense) I pretty much knew what I had to take. It is ultimately the student's responsibility to go find the answers. BUT If I remember correctly, Lucas felt terrible for letting his teammates down. That situation just stunk for everybody, but I am sure was a lesson for all involved.

edit: "figure out" to "figured out"

GerryOP...Obviously, you can't hide guys that aren't there. Here is what I am questioning. Are there other schools that have "figure out" a way around the New Year's Day bowl rules such as grade fixing, group "on-line" finals, "easy" fall courses followed by tougher spring courses, etc. I am NOT advocating we do this in any way shape or form. However, I just wonder how many FSU situations are out there when it comes to getting players eligible. BTW Kudos to them for highlighting and fixing the problem. So should UT be congratulated(maybe not the right word!) for actually suspending players for academic performance while other schools (suspiciously similar to ours in academic performance) have none ineligible for bowl games? Hopefully, I've defined my suspicion a little more clearly.

stj18 Is there a reasonable explanation such as a change in majors or just bad advising? When I was at UT, an advisor had to sign-off on my schedule.

That was a weird article...unusual at best. I'm not sure what to think of the student quotes. Not only is the athletic department separate budget wise from the academic departments, I do believe they give money back to the academic part of the university.
Here is the other side of the issue...I do know that UT is suffering from the budget cuts that have been handed down from the state, and they are major cuts for education as a whole. UT is trying to cut the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology (a top 30 program) from its budget. That has been tabled until fall - at least that is the last press release I have read. I hope they don't do that, that is a HUGE service to our community and region by helping young people. And they better not blame the football program if that happens...point the finger at the state beurocrates who seem to think educating our young people begins with balancing the budget at their expense. I can say this, I will be speaking my mind (at the State Government level) based in part on how well the Department of Speech and Audiology is treated - by VOTING.
